Audience interest in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has taken a big hit.
The latest audience tracking numbers show interest in the movie has dropped eight points, falling from 54 to 46, according to The Quorum via Puck News.
Awareness also slipped two points to 40.
The drop comes after weeks of controversy surrounding Nolan’s casting choices, Lupita Nyong’o’s comments about playing Helen of Troy, backlash from fans online, and even Nolan’s recent 60 Minutes appearance, which does not appear to have helped calm things down and may have actually backfired.

The Odyssey Interest Drops Eight Points
The latest Quorum numbers show The Odyssey has lost momentum with audiences.
Interest dropped from 54 to 46, a steep eight-point slide for one of the biggest movies on the 2026 summer calendar.
Audience awareness also fell from 42 to 40.
Quorum tracking measures how aware audiences are of upcoming movies and how interested they are in seeing them. For a big-budget tentpole from Christopher Nolan, the interest drop is the bigger concern.
The Odyssey still has time before release, but the latest numbers suggest the online backlash is real and may be starting to bleed into general audience perception.

Backlash Over Nolan’s Casting Hasn’t Gone Away
The drop follows controversy over Nolan’s casting for The Odyssey, including Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.
Nyong’o plays both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra in the film. Helen is traditionally described as the daughter of Zeus and Leda and “the face that launched a thousand ships.”
The casting has been criticized online, including by Elon Musk, who has called out Nolan’s approach and accused Hollywood of pushing DEI casting.
Nyong’o recently addressed the backlash by saying The Odyssey is “a mythological story” and that she is not spending her time defending the casting.
“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling,” Nyong’o said. “Our cast is representative of the world.”
The comments did not end the debate. They only added more fuel to it.

Black Panther Comments Added More Criticism
Nyong’o also faced new criticism after resurfaced comments about Marvel’s Black Panther began making the rounds online.
In the older interview, Nyong’o praised Black Panther for pushing back against the misrepresentation of Africa and for respecting real African cultures.
Critics are now accusing her of a double standard, arguing she cared about proper representation when it came to African culture but has no issue playing a Greek mythological figure in The Odyssey.

Nolan’s 60 Minutes Appearance Didn’t Stop The Slide
Nolan also recently appeared on 60 Minutes to promote The Odyssey, but the new tracking numbers suggest the interview did not boost audience interest.
Instead, the movie’s interest score has dropped sharply.
Nolan remains one of the most respected directors in Hollywood, and The Odyssey is still expected to be a major release. However, the recent controversy shows the movie is not being received as a guaranteed home run by all audiences.
The casting, the tone, Travis Scott playing a bard, the lack of a traditional orchestra, the costume designs, and Nyong’o’s comments have all become part of the larger conversation around the movie.
Nicolas Cage also recently came out and said Christopher Nolan is among a list of directors whose feelings get hurt.
