DC Comics Reimagines Scooby-Doo, Flintstones, Johnny Quest & More

DC Comics has announced new titles based on the Hanna-Barbera line of cartoons with reimaginings for Scooby-Doo, Flintstones, Johnny Quest and more.

Jim Lee did the Scooby-Doo cover and characters designs.

“I can’t think of anyone that doesn’t look back at these characters with anything but fond memories,” said Dan DiDio, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher. “With this initial lineup of titles and talent, we’re excited for fans to experience the reimagining of these Saturday morning classics with a more modern and contemporary look and feel.”

The titles will be released in May. 

SCOOBY APOCALYPSE – Featuring character designs by veteran artist Jim Lee and an origin story by Jim Lee and Keith Giffen (JUSTICE LEAGUE 3001), artist Howard Porter (SUPERMAN) will provide his own unique take on Freddie, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. “Those meddling kids” and their Mystery Machine are at the center of a well-meaning experiment gone wrong and they’ll need to bring all of their mystery solving skills to bear (along with plenty of Scooby Snacks), to find a cure for a world full of mutated creatures infected by a nanite virus that enhances their fears, terrors and baser instincts. This time, the horrors are real in this apocalyptic near-future badland!

FUTURE QUEST – Writer Jeff Parker (AQUAMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, BATMAN ’66) and artist Evan “Doc” Shaner (JUSTICE LEAGUE DARKSEID WAR: GREEN LANTERN) join forces to bring fans new tales of adventure’s most iconic teenager, Jonny Quest, along with his sidekick Hadji. This series combines Team QUEST (Hadji, Race Bannon, Dr. Benton Quest and Jezebel Jade) with some of the most well-known action and adventure heroes ever created by Hanna-Barbera, including SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, BIRDMAN, MIGHTOR and FRANKENSTEIN Jr., among others.

WACKY RACELAND – Take The Ant Hill Mob, Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly, mix in a healthy dose of “Mad Max” and you get this dark and gritty take on Hanna-Barbera’s “Wacky Races,” courtesy of writer Ken Pontac (REBOOT, HAPPY TREE FRIENDS) and artist Leonardo Manco (HELLBLAZER), with vehicle designs by Mark Sexton (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD). A time of hope and innocence with Utopia at the finish line has given way to planetary Armageddon and a desert wasteland full of radioactive lakes, nanotech dust storms, and cannibalistic mutants. Against this backdrop, the Wacky Racers and their sentient vehicles continue their contest, but now the competition is for survival, and there can only be one winner when the checkered flag falls.

THE FLINTSTONES – Based on character designs by Amanda Conner (HARLEY QUINN, STARFIRE), writer Mark Russell (PREZ, GOD IS DISAPPOINTED IN YOU) provides his own unique perspective on everyone’s “modern stone age family.” Russell will use Bedrock’s most popular family to shine a light on humanity’s ancient customs and institutions in a funny origin story of human civilization. Fred is still the simple man, striving to be the king of his castle, Wilma is still the tolerant but not-indulging wife and Barney (with his wife Betty and infant son Bamm-Bamm) is still the original wingman, whose loyalty to Fred often outweighs his common sense.

What In The Sam Hell Did Cartoon Network Do To Scooby-Doo?

Scooby-Doo gets yet another relaunch on Cartoon Network, but this time the series undergoes a drastic change.

Cartoon Network posted a video on their Facebook page, which hasn’t been well received by fans of the series that first originated back in 1969.

The new series is called “Be Cool Scooby-Doo” and sees the animation changed to reflect the current trend of something along the lines of Adult Swim, The Simpsons and Rick and Morty.

Some of the popular comments on the thread include:

• This looks like it’s from an episode of family guy

• If you want to bring back scooby-doo then bring back Mystery inc that was a great series. Stop making horrible animated shows that are beyond stupid, especially when there once was a series of the same show that was epic, ie. Scooby-doo and Teen titans. I use to love this channel but now it’s just gone too far down hill. Bring back the 90’s and 00’s shows.

• I think the next mystery that Scooby-Doo and the gang should solve is why Cartoon Network keeps rebooting old shows and every time they do a reboot the animation style gets worse.

WB is bringing Scooby-Doo back to the big screen, which more than likely will feature the classic animation. Am I the only one that misses the more realistic styles of animation from the 80s/90s (Transformers, GI Joe, X-Men, Spider-Man)? I can’t stand the way most toons look nowadays.

Scooby-Doo and the Gang are hitting the road, visiting eight U.S. cities this Halloween season, with the LEGO® Scooby-Doo Mystery Tour. In celebration of the recently released LEGO® Scooby-Doo™ building sets, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, in partnership with the LEGO Group, will launch a multi-city mall tour beginning September 19.

The LEGO Scooby-Doo Mystery Tour will offer fun activities for the whole family, with life-size LEGO models of Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, Fred and the Mystery Machine in each city. In addition to photo opportunities with the LEGO versions of the gang, guests will get the chance to interact with LEGO Scooby-Doo costume characters. At each event, kids can also enjoy an exclusive “Collect a Clue” booklet by participating in entertaining activities, including making Scooby-Doo masks and decorating trick-or-treat bags. Families will also have the chance to play with the LEGO Scooby-Doo building sets and go home with an exclusive model of the Mystery Machine.

“We are excited to bring Scooby-Doo and the Gang to fans around the country with the LEGO Scooby-Doo Mystery Tour,” said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President, Warner Bros. In a new video featuring Scooby-Doo and Shaggy, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealed today gameplay featuring everyone’s favourite Mystery, Inc. characters in LEGO Dimensions, the upcoming entertainment experience that merges physical LEGO brick building with interactive console gameplay. For the first time in a LEGO videogame, the Scooby-Doo gameplay combines the distinctive, blocky LEGO art style with the cel-shaded look of the original, animated cartoons. The LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack includes a complete, mission-based Scooby-Doo level that Batman, Wyldstyle and Gandalf must traverse in their quest to stop Lord Vortech and save the LEGO Multiverse.

For Scooby-Doo fans that want to customise their LEGO Dimensions experience, it was also announced that a Scooby-Doo Team Pack which includes LEGO Scooby-Doo and LEGO Shaggy minifigures, plus a LEGO Mystery Machine and LEGO Scooby Snack, will be available at the launch of the Starter Pack.  Scooby-Doo and Shaggy each have their own abilities and the Mystery Machine and Scooby Snack can be physically built and then rebuilt twice for a total of three different objects that do entirely different things in the digital game for massive variety. Either character can also unlock the Scooby-Doo Adventure World, an open-world environment which provides additional open world gameplay content separate from the game’s main story which allows players to explore iconic Scooby-Doo locations, race, solve puzzles, and more.

All expansion packs provide gamers the opportunity to use every character, vehicle and gadget interchangeably, anywhere throughout the game. The film reunites Oscar-nominated producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”), who previously produced the Studio’s hugely successful live-action features “Scooby-Doo” and “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.” Joining them is BAFTA Award-winning producer Allison Abbate (“The Iron Giant”), who produced the Oscar-nominated features “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie.”

It will be directed by multiple Emmy Award nominee Tony Cervone (“Space Jam,” Cartoon Network’s “The Looney Tunes Show” and “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated”). Renowned animation visionary Dan Povenmire (“Phineas and Ferb,” “Family Guy”) will also bring his creative sensibilities to the production as an executive producer. The screenplay is by Matt Lieberman (“Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief”).

The new Scooby-Doo feature will be a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation under the Warner Animation Group (WAG) banner.

In making the announcement, Silverman acknowledged, “Like countless fans, I have always loved the Hanna-Barbera cast of characters. As one of their most famous brand ambassadors, Scooby-Doo will take the lead in re-introducing this pantheon of enduringly popular animated stars on a grand scale with an exciting new movie.”

Said Fellman, “It’s always a treat to see Scooby-Doo on the big screen and to share his larger-than-life adventures with audiences. As anticipation grows throughout production, the movie’s mid-September release date should start the fall season with a burst of fun.”

Added Kroll, “It’s wonderful to be working with this talented and inspired team of filmmakers. We couldn’t ask for better producers than Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Allison Abbate, who have such affection and respect for this property and know the Hanna-Barbera universe so well.” Kwan Vandenberg further stated, “Scooby-Doo and his friends have the kind of universal appeal that reaches across cultures as well as generations. We expect this new take on the franchise to generate even more fans around the world.”

LEGO Dimensions Story Trailer

A new story trailer has been released for the LEGO Dimensions video game featuring Batman, Gandalf, Scooby Doo, Harley Quinn and Superman. Doctor Who is also a part of the game.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) is heading to Comic-Con International: SanDiego (SDCC) 2015 in support of its licensing partners as they feature exclusive products and giveaways throughout the four-day event.  From Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to DC Super Hero Girls to Scooby-Doo and more, fun offerings can be found for fans of all ages.

While at the show, fans who attend the interactive DC COMICS MEETS LEGO ART Panel on Thursday, July 9, will witness the convergence of the world’s greatest Super Heroes with one of the world’s greatest toys as LEGO® brick artist Nathan Sawaya unveils the first-look at select signature sculptures to be showcased in the global touring exhibition, The Art of the Brick: DC Comics. Acclaimed comic book artist and Co-Publisher of DC Entertainment, Jim Lee, will draw LIVE the concept for a brand new Batmobile to be built entirely out of LEGO bricks and later unveiled during the tour exhibition. EP Daily TV host, Victor Lucas, will serve as moderator, with production team members, Brandon Griffith and Tommy Williamson, joining the discussion. Additionally, attendees will be treated to exclusive giveaways during the panel.

DC Super Hero Girls, the all-new Super Hero franchise targeted to girls ages 6-12, will also have a presence at the show as DCE and Warner Bros., as well as WBCP partners Mattel and Random House, offer fans giveaways throughout the four-day event.

Joining Batman and Gandalf in LEGO Dimensions is a slew of new characters, which includes Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, The Simpsons and more.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment confirmed today that LEGO Dimensions, the upcoming entertainment experience that merges physical brick building with interactive console gameplay, will include gameplay from The Simpsons, Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, Portal, Jurassic World, Midway Arcade, LEGO Chima and Scooby Doo! These fan favourite worlds, most of which have never before been in a LEGO videogame, will converge with the previously announced DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago and Back to the Future worlds in one thrilling adventure playable with the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack. 

For gamers that want to customise their LEGO Dimensions experience, Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs based on these fourteen brands will provide new buildable characters, vehicles and gadgets, as well as compelling game content with mission-based levels and unique in-game abilities. All expansion packs will provide players the opportunity to use everything interchangeably, anywhere throughout the game.

It was also revealed in a new trailer that every LEGO vehicle and gadget can be physically built and then rebuilt twice for a total of three different objects that do entirely different things in the digital game for massive variety. Once players earn a building achievement, they will get in-game instructions that show them how to use the same physical LEGO bricks to rebuild vehicles and gadgets into different objects that provide all-new abilities.

For example, the LEGO vehicle bricks that come in the Starter Pack can be used to build the LEGO Batmobile that enables players to activate accelerator switches. The Batmobile can be rebuilt and transformed into the LEGO Batblaster which adds Sonar Smash, a sonar gun that has the ability to break LEGO sonar bricks.  The vehicle can then be rebuilt again as the LEGO Sonic Batray which adds a special attack in the form of a missile barrage.  Players can fuse an upgraded vehicle to the LEGO Toy Tag, enabling them to take it and any new abilities with them to a friend’s game or wherever they’d like to play. Players can do this with every vehicle and every gadget from every pack.
