James Gunn Says Not Right This Moment About Nova (Video)

As loyal readers of Cosmic Book News know, the site was founded as a result of Annihilation, the 2007 Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Nova and 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Cosmic comic books.

We’ve actually been bigger fans of Nova (and Quasar) than Guardians of the Galaxy as at the time the site was founded, a lot of the Richard Rider Nova fans jumped on board to pitch in. We’ve eventually evolved to where we cover a lot of other topics, but at our core we remain faithful to DnA cosmic.

So of course with Marvel Studios going with two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, we remain hopeful that eventually we’ll see Richard Rider on the big screen as well. Nova fans have already launched a petition to get Richard Rider in the MCU, and a Nova movie is also rumored for Marvel’s Phase 4 plans.

On top of that I regularly bug James Gunn about including Richard Rider Nova in the movies.

Gunn previously said the chance of a Nova movie is always possible, but for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Gunn calls out yours truly on Facebook and says not right now.

“I know you want Nova, Matt McGloin,” James Gunn said. “You go on here every time and say that you want Nova. You know, there are a lot of other characters out there… and I know you do. It’s become quite apparent that you are very excited about Nova and that’s what you want, but that’s not happening right at this moment.”

Maybe one day, James?

Watch the video below for more.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn. New cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.

Glenn Close Returns For Guardians of the Galaxy 2 As Nova Prime

We have our first confirmation that the Nova Corps will be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — or at least Nova Prime Glenn Close.

We know Gunn isn’t a big fan of Nova for whatever reason (which probably explains the first movie’s Nova Corps costume designs), and Gunn previously said John C. Reilly won’t be back as Corpsman Dey in the sequel.

Gunn also cut Richard Rider Nova from the first Guardians of the Galaxy script, but at least he isn’t as bitter when fans bring up mention of Rider on his Facebook page this time around as he recently said a Nova movie was possible and sounded pretty upbeat about it. I also don’t think Gunn is banning people from his Facebook page anymore when they do mention Nova, so that’s certainly a good sign.

Last we saw of the Nova Corps and Glenn Close is that at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie they are left keeping the Infinity Stone safe. However, Gunn did say that the Infinity Stone as well as Thanos won’t be a factor in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 so it remains to be seen how Glenn Close (and possibly the Nova Corps) will be involved.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn. New cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.

James Gunn Talks Chance of A Nova Movie; GOTG 2 Might Be At SDCC

In between shoots, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director James Gunn took part in another live Facebook Q&A.

Worth a mention is that toward the end of the video, Gunn said a Nova movie could happen.

“I think there is always a chance of a Nova movie,” Gunn said. “I don’t think it’s something I would do. But it’s possible.”

A Richard Rider Nova movie makes perfect sense for the MCU as it was the sister title to the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book that inspired Gunn’s movie, and both were written by the cosmic duo, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Nova still has a hard core fan base that supports anything Richard Rider — even the Richard Rider Nova Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy movie action figure sold better than all the other Guardians characters, and Nova wasn’t even in movie.

–>SIGN THE BRING RICHARD RIDER NOVA TO THE MCU PETITION

Fans have also been wondering if Marvel Studios will be appearing at this Summer’s San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel Studios skipped out on it last year, but in the video below, Gunn says he would love to come to Comic-Con.

“Am I going to San Diego Comic-Con?! That’s a good question!” Gunn teased. “You guys want me to go to San Diego Comic-Con? You’ll have to see! I would like to go. That would be amazing, wouldn’t it? I would like to come and see you all at San Diego Comic-Con and bring some friends along. That would be awful fun. That would be awful fun. I would really love to do that.”

Gunn also apologized if his recent Captain America comments upset any of the fans. He says his comments were meant to be a joke, but apologized if they came off the wrong way.

Gunn also says no Avengers characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 2; mentioned an emotional scene featuring Drax and Mantis in the movie, and no — we won’t be seeing Drax do a Bautista Power Bomb!

Dan Abnett Now Exclusive With DC Comics

Fan-favorite writer Dan Abnett has signed exclusively with DC Comics.

Abnett, known for penning Marvel Cosmic, Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova, will be writing Aquaman and Titans for DC.

Brad Walker, Abnett’s artist on Guardians, also returns for Aquaman.

See the full announcement below.

Good move, DC.

‘AQUAMAN’ AND ‘TITANS’ WRITER DAN ABNETT SIGNS WITH DC ENTERTAINMENT

Fan-Favorite Writer to Pen AQUAMAN and TITANS as Part of DC Universe: Rebirth

BURBANK, Calif. (May 26, 2016) – DC Entertainment continues to add top-flight talent to its creative roster, announcing today that it has reached an agreement with writer Dan Abnett to create comic book content solely for the company’s DC and Vertigo imprints. In addition to writing Aquaman: Rebirth #1 and Aquaman #1 in June, Abnett will also pen Titans: Rebirth #1, continuing threads from his storyline in his current Titans Hunt miniseries. Shipping twice monthly, the Aquaman art team includes talented artists Phil Briones, Scot Eaton, Oscar Jimenez, Jesus Merino and Brad Walker, while the monthly Titans will see artist Brett Booth accompany Abnett on the book.

“Dan Abnett is the perfect fit for Aquaman and Titans,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee. “He skillfully balances great dialogue and high-octane action, making for great reads every time. DC is excited that he’ll be giving fans more great stories in both books as we enter into our line wide REBIRTH re-launch in June and beyond.”

Aquaman continues the story of Arthur Curry, the King of Atlantis, as he seeks to reconcile his dual heritage of land and sea. A citizen of both worlds, Arthur seeks to unite Atlantis with the rest of the global community. But his plans will be thrown into chaos with the return of his arch-nemesis Black Manta, who seeks to destroy the careful balance of peace, and bring Aquaman’s world crashing down.

Titans continues story beats from Abnett’s run on Titans Hunt, with teammates Wally West, Donna Troy, Arsenal, Garth, Lilith and Nightwing all reunited after the disastrous consequences of having their memories lost. Now, with their memories intact they will attempt to reunite as a team, and stop the demon that broke them apart and is a threat to reality itself.

“I was delighted by Dan DiDio’s invitation to sign exclusively with DC,” said Abnett. “My recent work for DC, on projects like He-Man, Earth 2 and Titans Hunt have been both rewarding and enjoyable, and now with Aquaman’s Rebirth in the mix, and the Titans as a new series, it seems like the ideal time to really focus on DC work and do my best to knock each and every issue out of the park. Not that we have baseball parks in the UK. We have cricket pitches. But the point stands, anyway…”

Abnett makes his REBIRTH debut on Aquaman: Rebirth #1 (on sale June 8) and Aquaman #1 (on sale June 22) beginning an all-new story arc, blasting out of the events of the DC Universe: Rebirth #1 special, written by Geoff Johns (Justice League, Green Lantern: Rebirth, Flash: Rebirth), that went on sale May 25. As part of the REBIRTH line wide re-launch, Aquaman will ship twice monthly, and at a lower price of $2.99.

MCU Rumors Include: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers Infinity War & More

A batch of rumors regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have hit the net, which includes Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: RagnaorkDoctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and more.

I took a quick glace, and some of them are news already known or speculated about, but it’s still fun to check out.

I think these come from 4chan (via reddit):

Mads Mikkelsen is playing Dr. Anthony Druid in DOCTOR STRANGE. He’s the main villain. Amy Landecker and Scott Adkins are playing his followers. Michael Stuhlbarg is playing a LHC scientist who assists Doctor Druid. Dormammu is referenced.

Kurt Russell is playing Stakar in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. He’s Star-Lord’s father and the main villain. Secondary villains include Tullk and Taserface. Ego, the Living Planet, will appear, and they’re scouting high-profile actors to voice him.

Sylvester Stallone, Sharon Stone and Christopher Lloyd have minor roles in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2.

The main villains of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING are Norman Osborn and the Vulture, with appearances by Spencer Smythe and Miles Warren.

Michael Keaton was approached to play Osborn, but declined because he didn’t want to commit to a multi-picture contract. Other actors are now being approached, including Jason Clarke and Dougray Scott.

Mark Rylance has been approached about playing the Vulture and Gary Oldman is in negotiations to play Smythe. Andrew McCarthy is in early talks to play Warren.

Peter won’t have a prominent love interest in the first movie, although he will have a crush on Liz Allan, who is being played by Laura Harrier. Flash Thompson will also appear, with Blake Jenner in talks to play him. Daniel Zovatto and Charlie Rowe are in talks to play Harry Osborn.

THOR: RAGNAROK will feature Cate Blanchett as Hela and Surtur will be unleashed in the third actor. Josh Brolin will have an appearance as Thanos that leads directly into AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

Tessa Thompson is indeed playing Broomhilde, the warrior valkyrie. She is Thor’s new romantic interest. It will be established Thor and Jane Foster’s relationship ended on amicable terms due to his responsabilities as the guardian of the Nine Realms preventing them from committing to a life together.

Villains of BLACK PANTHER are High Priest Achebe, Ulysses Klaue and M’Baku. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Klaw. Martin Freeman is also reprising his role as Everett Ross.

Black Panther’s love interest will be Monica Lynne, reinvented as a political envoy employed by Ross. Other supporting characters are Shuri, T’Challa’s sister; N’Gassi, the royal advisor; Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje; Adenbi, Achebe’s loyal follower; and Jack Truman, Lynne’s handler.

Casting is still in early stages, but Marvel has already named Michael Jai White as one of the frontrunners for M’Baku, and had meetings with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nicole Beharie, Yaya DaCosta and Sharol Leal for the lead female roles, either Lynne or Shuri or both.

Carol Danvers will appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR before CAPTAIN MARVEL, and Emily Blunt is lined up to play her. Emily Carmichel in talks to direct.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 1 will be renamed. First draft has recently been delivered. Apparently set on Earth and centered on the assembly of the Infinity Gauntlet.

CAPTAIN MARVEL will feature the Kree as villains. Not much is set.

ANT-MAN & THE WASP will feature the return of Janet Van Dyne and Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne fighting an old enemy of Hank Pym’s past familiar with the Quantum Realm, but his identity hasn’t yet been determined.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 2 will be set in Space and feature the final battle against Thanos.

INHUMANS will most likely be scrapped.

Chris Evans is expected to renew his contract for more CAPTAIN AMERICA movies in Phase 4. Robert Downey Jr., however, is not. although there’s renewed interest in IRON MAN 4 lately.

Sequels for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, DOCTOR STRANGE, BLACK PANTHER and SPIDER-MAN already in discussions. They’re being optimistic, but more reserved with CAPTAIN MARVEL.

SECRET INVASION and SIEGE are popular storylines that are being considered as overarching storylines of Phase 4 and beyond.

There is a plan for the potential return of the Fantastic Four to the MCU. However, there are no contigencies for the X-Men, which are unlikely to ever return. There is interest in Namor, too.

There is interest in the Sentry, Spider-Woman, Hercules, Photon, Nova. the Young Avengers and the Thunderbolts for Phase 4 and beyond.

Blade, Moon Knight and Ghost Rider are being lined-up for Netflix shows.

BLACK WIDOW is actually of interest, but likely won’t happen in phase 3. Likewise, there’s been debate about a standalone WINTER SOLDIER movie.

There’s a running gag about producing a Supreme Squadron movie, but chances of it actually happening are virtually zero.

Richard Rider Nova Selling Over 200 Percent Better Than NINO

Marvel Comics seems to be less in the money-making business than it is in the PC BS business these days.

Updating my previous article from a couple of weeks ago, the numbers for the relauch of NINO (Nova In Name Only) are in, and they’re even further down the gutter than last time.

Following February’s disastrous drop of over 5000, March sees another drop of 1300 to 16,886 units for NINO #5.

Looking back at the more popular and fan-favorite Abnett and Lanning Nova from 2007, Richard Rider sold a whopping 39,540 copies (234% better) with its own fifth issue — and that’s when Marvel could give a hoot about Marvel Cosmic.

Just imagine if Richard Rider had a smidgen of the promotion that Marvel Comics gave NINO, it’s possible Richard Rider Nova could be a consistent top seller.

However, guys like Joe Quesada, Axel Alonso, Dan Buckley, Tom Brevoort, Jeph Loeb, Brian Bendis and Stephen Wacker made sure that didn’t happen. It’s obviously a good thing they’re not involved with the movies.

We still don’t know why Richard Rider got the axe, or Abnett and Lanning for that matter.

You an offer your thoughts on the subject in our Marvel Cosmic forums.

Marvel Cosmic Tanking Fast

Here’s an update on the sales for Marvel Cosmic, which hasn’t been the same since Abnett and Lanning were on the books.

Back when DnA were at the helm, Marve Cosmic sales were “rock solid” — per the words of the former editor on the book, Bill Rosemann.

Now save Abnett’s Guardians of Infinity and Starlin’s Adam Warlock/Thanos stuff, all the Marvel “Cosmic” comics put out by Marvel have more or less become parodies of their former glory.

It’s obvious fans haven’t been happy with Marvel Cosmic for a while as sales continue to nose dive. I’m guessing a lot of the Marvel Cosmic readers aren’t even around much any more.

The bold titles below are more or less the titles that have replaced the Annihilation-era of Marvel Cosmic, with just about all of them approaching the cancellation threshold number (some are already below it; used to be 25-30K back when Quesada was in charge). I’ve included a few other titles that are sort of relevant to the genre as well.

February numbers:

Mighty Thor #4 (56,568): not a bad drop from January’s 60,345.

All New All Different Avengers #5 (51, 740): dropped almost 6000.

All New All Different Avengers #6 (48,022): make that 9000 from issue #4.

Doctor Strange #5 (47,933); drop of around 5000.

Bendis’ Guardians of Galaxy (40,581): drop of 6000. I’m guessing Bendis took a pay cut to stay on this book as it’s under 50K. Normally whenever a book Bendis is on drops below that number (ditto with Loeb), he gets replaced.

Totally Awesome Hulk #3 (35,709): drop of around 4000.

A-Force #2 (35,571): drop of 30,000.

Uncanny Inhumans #5 (35, 145): holding steady.

Ms. Marvel #4 (30,916): drop of about 2000.

Rocket Raccoon and Groot #2 (29,180): Drop of 30,000.

Captain Marvel #2 (28,962): drop of 24,000.

Ultimates #4 (27, 177): drop of around 3000 – hearing good things about Ewing’s work on this; have yet to try it.

Karnak #2 (26,796): drop of 37,000 from October’s #1.

Silver Surfer #2 (25,099): drop of 32,000.

Squadron Supreme #4 (24,182): plus 1000.

All New Inhumans #4 (22,334): drop of 3000.

Guardians of Infinity #3 (22,309): drop of almost 5000.

Venom Space Knight #4 (21,545): drop of around 4000.

Howard The Duck #4 (20,965): drop of 8000.

Star-Lord #4 (19,117): drop of 3,500.

Angela Queen of Hel #5 (15,968): drop of 3000.

NINO Nova # 4 (18,187): drop of over 5000. Consistent poor seller for Marvel; consistently sells less than the Richard Rider Nova. Why NINO is still around is anybody’s guess.

Drax #4 (14,620): drop of 4,200.

Hercules #4 (13, 767): drop of around 2,600.

James Gunn Doesn’t Deny Sylvester Stallone Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Rumor

The past week or so has seen rumors hit the net regarding Sylvester Stallone being involved with Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

The first rumor stated Sly was going cosmic when he allegedly was spotted at the same Atlanta hotel the cast of GOTG 2 is staying at, and it was also said Stallone was seen with the script and used the same car as Chris Pratt.

Following that, a second rumor hit the net suggesting Sylvester Stallone is playing a member of the Nova Corps, as it’s said he was spotted wearing what resembles a Judge Dredd costume.

We know James Gunn is big on social media and loves to read all about his Guardians of the Galaxy movie (ha ha). A few days ago saw Gunn comment on rumors surrounding the film. Though he made no mention of Stallone – Gunn says he isn’t commenting on rumors anymore – he neither denies nor confirms the rumor, but does offer a cryptic response via Facebook.

Sometimes rumors around ‪#‎GotGVol2‬ turn up that are batshit crazy. Other times rumors turn up that are batshit crazy AND untrue. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to wait a while to find out which ones are which. I’m done spoiling the fun.

Back to shooting a scene with Man-Thing and Chris Pratt.*

*All right, that one’s untrue. For now…

The post also saw Gunn answer a few fan questions:

Better to debunk rumours or to have fun with them?

As I announced a couple months ago, I will ignore all of them.

Hey James what would be the likelyhood of a symbiote showing up in a future Guardians/cosmic Marvel film?

As of now very unlikely.

Hey Mr Gunn when you saw Civil War did you offer any suggestions/improvements? Or was the movie done the best it could already?

I offered suggestions, but mostly just told them what I thought worked and the (very little) that didn’t work.

If asked would you ever direct a episode of The Walking Dead

Nope. There’s no current TV show I’d direct.

Are any of these rumours ever started by yourself or the cast?!

No.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn. New cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.

Sylvester Stallone Rumored As A Nova For Guardians of the Galaxy 2

A few days ago saw word hit that Sylvester Stallone was spotted in Atlanta on his way to the set of Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Now it’s revealed that Sylvester Stallone might be playing a Nova.

According to OnLocationVacations, a tipster provided information that Sylvester Stallone’s costume “looks a lot like Judge Dredd.”

If you are familiar with Judge Dredd, and the Nova Corps from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, the costumes do look a lot alike:

Petition Launches For Richard Rider Nova For Avengers: Infinity War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24304:]]

It is critical that you pay attention at this time!

Richard Rider Nova fans have launched a petition requesting the inclusion of fan-favorite Marvel Comics character Richard Rider Nova in The Avengers: Infinity War movies.

You can sign the petition here.

The Richard Rider Nova character has a long and storied history in the comic book world beginning in 1976 with the publication of “The Man Called Nova.” Richard Rider Nova was an important part of the original “Infinity War” comic book event and was prominently featured in the story and on the cover art. We are writing to ask that you include Richard Rider Nova in the Infinity War movie as part of the large cast of characters who will be participating in the war to stop Thanos.

Nova was a sister title to Abnett and Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy title that inspired the billion dollar Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn Marvel Studios and Disney franchise. Though Nova didn’t happen to appear in the movie, his Guardians of the Galaxy movie action figure was the best-selling figure of the line, and Nova was even voted into the Marvel Heroes video game by the fans. Yep! You can’t keep a good man down!

For fans of the character, a likely added benefit of Richard Rider Nova appearing in the movie will be his return to the comic book world.  After all, the mere appearance of a character in a movie or TV show has worked for everyone from Howard the Duck to Hellcat.  The upcoming Captain America: Civil War movie has even brought Steve Rogers back to the Captain America role, and more than likely Thor’s return will be imminent as soon as Ragnarok gets closer to its release. So, if you want Rider back, this is likely the best shot for it to happen in the near future. Take a minute to add your name to the petition.  When the goal is reached, it will be sent to Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers.

Nova was even in early scripts of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, so there is that to build upon.  Check out some cool concept art:

Guardians of Infinity Tops 100k; Richard Rider Nova Still Sells Better Than NINO

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23771:]]

As much BS as Tom “Rumpelstiltskin” Brevoort likes to spin on his Tumblr, there is no denying that Richard Rider Nova is a better seller than his replacement, NINO (“Nova In Name Only”).

The most recent issue of NINO, December’s #2, is already under 30K and is again fast approaching cancellation numbers with only 27k in sales (2007 Richard Rider Nova #2 had around 45k).

Further good news comes in the form of the December sales for Abnett’s first issue of Guardians of Infinity which topped 100,000 copies; albeit in part due to being featured in the December Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Collector’s Corps geek box. Hey, but we’re not complaining.

Following Marvel Studios green lighting the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel Comics under Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada, Axel Alonso, Jeph Loeb, Brian Michael Bendis and Tom Brevoort removed Abnett and Lanning and did away with their popular and best-selling Marvel Cosmic line of comics, which included the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy team that inspired the new billion dollar Disney franchise.

Richard Rider Nova was also a part of the line and was replaced with a childish wannabe Spider-Man. Sales for the first launch of NINO quickly collapsed and Loeb was announced off the book with the the publication of the second issue. Since then, NINO has consistently sold less than Richard Rider Nova.

The Richard Rider Nova Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Infinite Action figure was even the best-selling figure of the line – outselling Rocket, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and Iron Man – and he wasn’t even featured in the movie.

Fans also voted Richard Rider Nova into the Marvel Heroes 2015 video game, ahead of NINO.

It doesn’t stop there as obviously Disney recognizes the potential of Richard Rider Nova as they continue to put out merchandise in his name, with the latest being the Thanos Imperative Dice Masters Game. We’ll also throw in Hasbro is putting out a Quasar figure based on DnA’s Realm Of Kings and Annihilators.

While Marvel Comics – for some odd reason – is keeping Richard Rider Nova in the dark, it’s hoped with the Marvel Studios Avengers: Infinity War movies that Richard Rider Nova might make a cameo. The directors on the two-parter, Anthony and Joe Russo, recently let it be known they are keeping track of 67 Marvel characters. Hopefully, Rich is among them.

Stephen Amell Open To Marvel; How About Nova?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23331:]]

Stephen Amell more than likely won’t be featured on the big screen along side Batman and Superman, which is a shame as Amell has been the face of DC for the past few years.

While DC might have missed the boat, how about Marvel?

In Stephen Amell’s latest Facebook video, the actor offers he would consider doing a Marvel role and even says he wouldn’t turn it down.

“Sure, why not?  I’m up for roles – movie roles – although I’ve never really read Marvel Comics, and I was always a DC guy even before I was a DC guy. But it’s not like if I got offered an awesome Marvel superhero, I’d be like ‘No, I can’t.'”

Just off the top of my head, Richard Rider Nova came to mind. With James Gunn launching the Marve Cosmic side of things with Guardians of the Galaxy, how about Stephen Amell playing Nova? Nova actually helped launch the Guardians of the Galaxy comic as the character was featured in the stellar Marvel Cosmic event back in 2005/6 with the fan-favorite Annihilation story. Marvel Comics followed that up with the 2007 Nova comic, which then saw another Annihilation event and Guardians of the Galaxy.

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Marvel put out a more serious Nova movie (than Guardians) directed by someone like Ridley Scott, Matt Reeves, Joseph Kosinksi or Rupert Wyatt. Maybe even JJ Abrams?

Amell talks Marvel at around the 7-minute mark below.

Stephen Amell stars in “Arrow” and will be featured in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2” as Casey Jones.

James Gunn Says No To Nova For Guardians of the Galaxy 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22106:]]

Well, boo on you, James Gunn. Again.

For the second movie in a row, James Gunn will not be including the fan-favorite Human Rocket, Richard Rider Nova.

Nova was a part of the original Guardians of the Galaxy script written by Nicole Perlman; however, when Gunn came on board and changed things, out went Rider.

Gunn’s reasoning is that he wants to only use Star-Lord as the only Guardians of the Galaxy member from Earth. Of course, our arguement is that Star-Lord isn’t really all that relatable as an Earthling as he’s half alien and was taken from Earth at a young age.

A fan asked Gunn on Twitter if there was a shot at seeing Nova as a new member, but Gunn replied: “They will get a new team member such as someone who is not Nova.”

On the bright side, at least we get to look forward to more dancing in the sequel…

“Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

No Chance For Hulk or Captain Marvel In Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Says James Gunn

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21993:]]

Over a year ago saw it rumored that at the end of The Avengers 2, the Hulk would be stuck in a pre-programmed Quinjet jettisoning the Green Goliath off to space where the Hulk would meet up with the Guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Gunn previously shot down the Hulk Guardians of the Galaxy 2 rumor, and now seeing how it’s learned the Hulk’s story will not be told in Captain America: Civil War, speculation has again started up that the Hulk would be appearing in Gunn’s sequel.

However, Gunn once again shoots down any notion of the Hulk appearing.

“I will comment on it now (as I’ve done before) – there is zero chance you will see Hulk in GotGVol2,” Gunn offered on Twitter.

Gunn continued with mention that Captain Marvel won’t be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as well.

“For the time being, it’s important to me that Quill is the sole human (earthling) character,” Gunn replied to questioning about Captain Marvel making her MCU debut in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Gunn also offered he doesn’t want a lot of new characters in GoTG2 because he would like to focus on the characters already from the first movie.

“Not too many, that’s for sure!” Gunn responded in regards to how many new characters he would like to take on in Guardians 2. “I want all of our characters to get MORE personal time than they did in the 1st film.”

Regarding Gunn’s statement about Star-Lord being the sole human, which he has stated before, the line of reasoning stirs contention amongst the Cosmic fans as many Marvel Cosmic fans want to see Richard Rider Nova a part of the Guardians movies (Gunn cut Nova from an earlier script), and Star-Lord could easily be argued as not being a relatable human as, for one, he’s half alien, and secondly, in Gunn’s movie, Star-Lord was abducted at a young age and grew up in space. Hopefully a different director will want to tackle Richard Rider Nova’s story at some point.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

DC’s Omega Men Promises To Be Better Cosmic Than Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20824:]]

While Marvel Comics goes the PC and parody route with their cosmic titles, DC Comics writer Tom King is promising that The Omega Men will “tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The Omega Men #1 launches tomorrow as part of the new “DC You” line-up that follows the Convergence event.

Tom King spoke with USA Today offering some space-age details about The Omega Men, which previously hinted at the death of White Lantern Kyle Rayner in the special 8-page sneak peek preview (see below).

“A lot of companies have told the greatest cosmic stories over the past 20 years in comics using concepts invented for DC,” King said. “With this story, DC’s going to take back its stars. We’re going to tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The following plot is also revealed:

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Joe Staton‘s run on Green Lantern in 1981, the Omega Men are a group of intergalactic renegades from the Vega star system. In their new take on the team, King and Indonesian artist Barnaby Bagenda infuse the book with a rebels-vs.-empire concept a la Star Wars but grounded in an impactful reality inspired by King’s work in the CIA as a counterterrorism operations officer.

The Citadel rules the Vega system with an iron hand — King figures it’s akin to somewhere between the height of the British Empire and occupied Europe circa 1943. The Green Lantern Corps are cosmic cops protecting the universe but the Citadel is off limits to them thanks to some shady dealings.

In an act of revolution, the Omega Men use a video to broadcast the death of Rayner — although the screen turns to fuzz during the killing blow, and we never actually see the White Lantern‘s body — and that causes all sorts of problems. The Lanterns are incensed that they can’t come in and investigate, and the power players of the Citadel take it upon themselves to apprehend the outlaws.

Regarding the death of Kyle Rayner:

The Omega Men is definitely an ambitious project for King on the whole. He remembers having three editors on the phone when writing Rayner’s death: “It was like, ‘Oh, you can use Kyle Rayner,’ and I’m like, ‘Great, I’ll kill him!’ ”

King also says the story is on par with Star Wars, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, and that: “I’m taking that opportunity to write an incredible, epic sci-fi adventure that kicks you in the gut and keeps going.”

THE OMEGA MEN #1

Writer: Tom King

Art: Barnaby Bagenda, José Marzán, Jr.

Description:

The Omega Men are back in an all-new series! They’ve murdered White Lantern Kyle Rayner and now, the universe wants them to pay! Who are these intergalactic criminals – and is there more to their actions than meets the eye?

Review: NINO #31

Happy Day!  This trash book is finally over!  It can now be relegated to the dust bin where it and other bad memories belong.  Hopefully, Brevoort and Alonso will join it there when their Secret Wars event flops.

The art is particularly bad this issue.  I have always hated this Manga-ized version of the Nova uniform, but NINO looks particularly stupid in it this issue.  In some panels, his neck is the size of a pencil.  When his helmet is off, he has Dumbo-sized ears.  I guess that’s the source of his flight powers.

The story is just as dumb as always with NINO improbably beating a much more powerful and experienced fighter after his actions place Earth in danger.  I, as always, was rooting for the villain.  The perfect ending to this story would’ve been NINO’s death.  Sadly, he survives.  And his unfit parents look to be letting him continue to wear the helmet.  Hey Marvel, this isn’t entertainment.  It’s a tragic example of why kids shouldn’t have super-powers and shouldn’t be soldiers/cops – and why unfit parents shouldn’t have kids.  Not to mention an example of why Duggan shouldn’t be allowed to write cosmic.

Rocket Racoon and Beta Ray Bill have cameos in this issue – showing up just in time to keep NINO’s screw-up from laying waste to Earth.  Yet literally thousands of fairly large asteroids are shown left circling Earth – with no indication that NINO actually cleaned any of them up.  Irresponsible?  I guess anyone can be made an Avenger these days.   At least NINO’s upcoming Avenger book will have a short life span.  Maybe after that, Marvel will give up on this failed experiment.

NINO’s gone, and good riddance to him and his fans.  It’s been too long in coming and he won’t be missed.  Leave this one on the shelf.  Nothing to see here.  And the last issue needs to go out selling less than 18K to ice the NINO failure cake and send Marvel a clear message:  No more NINO’s!

IGINO #1

An Opinion-Editorially Oriented Review

First off, don’t believe the hype for this book being shoveled high and deep by Marvel shill websites like CBR and IGN.  This book is really just another showcase for Duggan’s un-originality and an opportunity for Marvel to answer all the media criticism about females and racial minorities being in short supply in their universe with yet another replacement of an established superhero with someone with politically correct demographics.

Duggan freely admits that he blatantly re-packaged teen Spiderman tropes for his excruciatingly bad NINO series which thankfully and mercifully ended this week.  For Infinity Gauntlet in Name Only (hereinafter referred to as IGINO), he simply begins with the tired old “Lone Ranger” cliché that has too often been applied to the Nova concepts, adds a Good Times-like family with all the desired PC demographics as the protagonists of the story, inferiorly re-packages the Annihilation Prologue storyline, and throws all this into a War of the Worlds type setting with a raggedy-looking Thanos skulking around in the background looking for Infinity Stone fragments as the only real tie to the namesake of this storyline – Marvel’s best pre-Annihilation cosmic story, Starlin’s original The Infinity Gauntlet.  Given all that, I’d have to conclude that Duggan has replaced Bendys as the King of Hackery.  He’s obviously poorly versed in Science-Fiction and it shows.  He simply re-packages concepts from popular SF-oriented comic books, TV, and movies – and produces something vastly inferior to the original.

Frankly, I’m tired of all the PC nonsense.  All this howling in the mainstream media is mainly directed toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is primarily coming from critics who don’t buy and read comic books.   If there really is a comic book market of buyers eager to buy books about female and racial minority heroes, it isn’t evident if sales history is used as a measure.  She-Hulk, Spider-Girl, Spiderwoman, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Falcon, etc. have all had multiple re-launched books and have never really been able to stay above cancellation threshold for very long.  Sure – some of them were kept on life-support for a while.  But none of them have had real staying power.  I give credit to Marvel for trying.  But if the buyers aren’t there, they aren’t there.

What annoys me is when Marvel cheats and takes the lazy (and racist and/or sexist in its own way) path out.  Instead of taking the risk and creating new characters with PC demographics from scratch and trying to make them compelling enough to catch on with the general population of comic buyers, they, in a form of reverse racism/sexism, replace beloved white male superheroes who already have a large following with female and/or racial minority characters knowing that the buyers will continue to buy the books they habitually buy for a while – all the while knowing in the back of their minds that the originals will return.  Does anyone really believe that Thor Odinson and Steve Rogers won’t return to their respective roles of Thor and Captain America once the PC characters now filling their shoes wear out their welcome?  Of course not.   Marvel doesn’t want to lose those habitual buyers.  The exception to this rule appears to be Richard Rider’s Nova.  For some reason, Marvel doesn’t care about alienating his fan base, and Marvel Writers and Editors go out of their way to insult and denigrate his fan base.

First we’ve had Loeb’s truly pathetically bad half-Xandarian-half-Hispanic teen idiot, Sam Alexander, as Rich’s permanent replacement.  Now comes Black Female teenage Xandarian, Anwen Bakian, and her family – including a salty old grandpa and a dog.  Could you get more PC than this?  I think not.  And the zombies and the small minority of PC-lovers are standing in line to drink this Guyana Kool-Aid.  Of course, I fully expect to be viciously attacked by the PC-Police with their Ferguson-Missouri-Police tactics merely for expressing these views.

Let’s talk about how clichéd and dumb this IGINO concept and storyline are in the first place.  How many times have you seen this kind of chase and narrow escape scenario?  In just about every monster movie you’ve ever seen, right?  How many times on how many TV shows have you seen a grandpa and son-in-law argument such as presented in this book?  On how many dumb child-oriented TV shows are the teenagers and children portrayed as wiser, smarter, and braver than the adults?  And how stupid is that anyway?  I’ve got no problem with there being dark-skinned Xandarians.  I do have a problem with there being a dog on Xandar.  Why is there a German Shepherd dog on Xandar?  I have no problem with a dark-skinned adult female Nova Corpsman.  I have a problem with the entire family getting Nova powers.  Once again, Marvel is going down the immoral child soldier pathway.  And I have a huge problem with Anwen being the next in line as Rich’s replacement.  I suppose the dog will also get powers – or more likely, since Duggan can’t resist a good cliché, the dog will die a tragic, heroic death since none of the principals except maybe dad or grandpa will get killed.  Why is Thanos skulking around in the background?  He’s not that kind of guy.  He’s a lot more powerful than the bugs and Anwen’s mom.  Why doesn’t he just stride in and take the stones he’s looking for?  Also, why do we need another NINO type book aimed at children?  Wasn’t the original NINO experiment a big enough failure? This book is hardly original or of high quality – unless you have the deficient mentality of a CBR/IGN reviewer or a CBR forum regular or one of the chronic complainers who show up on Facebook to take issue with me.  In that case, you probably think it’s wonderful as you wash it down with the rest of your Pablum.

Weaver’s art is decent for most of the book.  At times – such as the underground scene and some of the chase scenes – it’s muddled and confusing.  But for the most part, it’s well done.  It’s not enough to save this book – but it keeps the book from being a total waste of paper.

So, my advice, particularly if you’re a Rich Rider Nova fan, is to vote with your dollars and boycott this Politically Correct NINO-ette (hereinafter referred to as PC-NINO-ette).  Marvel needs to be slapped down for disrespecting the Rider Nova fans once again, for disrespecting the Annihilation and The Infinity Gauntlet source material, and for producing this PC-NINO-ette disgusting, hackneyed trash.  Making this book a sales failure is a good way to do it.

Marvel Comics Teases “All-New All Different” For Fall 2015

It looks as if the rest of the Marvel Comics readers will catch up with the Marvel COSMIC readers as a new teaser has been released stating “All-New All-Different” for Fall 2015.

Because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel Comics cancelled Marvel Cosmic and replaced it with a parody version of itself.

It’s not exactly clear what is going to happen with the rest of Marvel, but a few changes are already known as the Avengers team revealed on FCBD will stick around.

The teaser also reads “8 Months Later…” as the titles will be jumping ahead eight months following Secret Wars.

NINO #30 Review & PC Op-ed

An Opinion-Editorial Oriented Review Decrying Political Correctness in Comic Books

Duggan, like Bendis, has no real understanding of science-fiction.   They both just rip-off plot and action elements from popular cinema and televised science-fiction and science-fantasy.  This issue, Duggan copies some elements from Babylon 5 and Deep Impact to make yet another thoroughly insipid and totally implausible NINO storyline.

Duggan admits he copies teen Spiderman plot elements from the past, and he likes to take to twitter to talk about what a brave, filled-to-the-brim with integrity kind of guy he is because he resists the harsh criticism leveled at him about NINO and keeps churning out NINO trash.  Hey Duggan, that doesn’t make you brave or full of integrity.   Re-packaging well-worn tropes from comics, cinema, and TV just makes you a hack.

The eye-rolling and stomach-churning moments go hand-in-hand in this issue with Duggan having NINO take on an ultra-powerful and ultra-experienced trained warrior – and of course, totally implausibly winning.  Stupid.  Unbelievable (in a bad way).

Of course, NINO predictably continues to screw up and his screw-ups result in Earth being put in incredible danger from multiple sources including a storm of asteroids heading straight for Earth.  Also, predictably, NINO (just like all the other current cosmic characters) has the Avengers on speed dial to call to save the day because cosmic characters are such buffoons under Bendys, Duggan, Loeb, Brevoort, and Alonso – that all cosmic characters can do is screw-up and place Earth in danger.  They can’t save Earth (or anything else).  Cosmic characters can no longer effectively single-handedly deal with cosmic threats.  They just trigger cosmic threats.  Then they’ve got to call The Avengers or The X-Men for help.  How dumb is that?  Pretty dumb.  But what else do you expect from Bendys, Duggan, Loeb, Brevoort, and Alonso?  They wanted to reduce cosmic to bathroom humor level buffoonery and they succeeded.

The art continues to decline on this deplorable book.  NINO continues to look thoroughly stupid in a poorly designed manga-ish military uniform he never earned in the first place.   It’s actually painful to look at the little idiot.

With sales under 20K despite all the marketing hype, a regular cartoon appearance, and shoehorning the little idiot into every major event, Marvel needs to wake up and declare this trash the failure that it so obviously is.  But that would make too much sense.  Instead, they decided to double-down on the failed formula and do an even more politically correct version of NINO, a PC-NINO-ette as it were.  Out with the half-alien/half-Hispanic male kid and in with the black female kid.  I guess the reasoning was, “If it worked for Ms. Marvel, maybe it’ll work for NINO.”

If you’re a true fan of the original Nova concepts and you’d like to see Rich Rider back in his rightful place, its past time to take action.  Boycott, NINO and PC-NINO-ette.  Send Marvel a clear message that they need to stop replacing beloved classic characters just for the sake of appealing to political correctness in the general population.  The general population could care less about comic books.

That being said, despite all evidence to the contrary, if Marvel thinks that there really is an enormous demographic of buyers out there just dying to buy books about female, racial minority, religious minority, and sexual orientation-minority characters – then by all means please create such NEW characters from scratch and give them a book.  Let’s have a book about a super-powered, bi-sexual, female, half-Gypsy/half-Pygmy, wheelchair-bound, Shinto priestess who’s seriously considering sex change surgery.   Sounds hilarious.   I might even buy the first issue.  This ultimately PC character would certainly please the “small but vocal” PC crowd (and their PC police force who frequently shoot the rest of us in the back as we try to flee this PC nonsense).  But please, don’t use that ultimate PC character as a replacement for Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Nova, etc.   Live up to your name as the “House of Ideas,” do the courageous/non-lazy thing, and create a brand new character with the demographics you want to capture.

Review: NINO #29

When will this waste of paper be over?

The annual sold about 18K.  That would be cancellation time for most any Marvel book – but Marvel keeps this trash on life support?  To chase a demographic of 7-12-year-old buyers that doesn’t really exist?

Hey Brevoort – you’ve got 18K of buyers with the mentality of 7-12-year-olds, but that’s about it.  Few to no actual 7-12 year olds buying comic books.  Psssst – here’s a secret:  They’re too busy playing video games.

Despite a near unprecedented marketing campaign, a cartoon series, and shoehorning the “little idiot” (Loeb’s own description of this character) into every event – the best you’ve got is 18K for a NINO annual?  To quote NINO himself, “Epic fail!”

And Duggan, you can keep underlining Rider’s death and insulting Rider fans as much as you like in your book and on forums, but most of us will NEVER accept or embrace your NINO or your upcoming “Politically Correct NINO-ette.”  And we’ll never forgive you or Loeb for mangling the Nova mythos with this puerile garbage or for your continued disrespect for fans of the true Nova, Rich Rider.

Fact is, Duggan, like Bendis and Loeb, has no idea how to write a true cosmic story.  He writes farce.  That’s it.  The space setting is incidental, and the aliens are around purely for comic relief.   Substitute any city – New York, Mayberry, Los Angeles – literally anywhere for the space setting and change the aliens to doofus humans, and the story would read exactly the same.  Duggan even alludes to this himself when he has NINO dress up like Deadpool in this painfully bad issue.  He’s basically writing a less hypomanic Deadpool, throwing in some stars and aliens, and calling it “Nova.”  That’s pretty much what passes for “cosmic” at Marvel these days – forgettable, farcical, hackneyed stories aimed at the lowest common denominator.

The cover art looks like graphics from a bad manga-inspired video game, and the interior art is even worse with NINO looking even more ridiculously scrawny than usual wearing his dad’s uniform.  That’s not a superhero or a soldier/police officer.  NINO literally looks like what he is – a child playing dress-up.

Tell me, NINO fans, how do you conveniently overlook the fact that NINO’s mother allows her minor child, NINO, to go off into space alone for the foreseeable future?  How is that decision even remotely plausible for anyone other than an unfit parent?

Tell me, Avengers fans, is it even remotely plausible that the real Captain America, a responsible adult in every other comic but this one, would be supportive of a minor child wielding powers of mass destruction and going into space alone risking his life and perhaps endangering the Earth with his actions (as actually happened in this issue)?

I guess NINO fans and Avenger-zombies have a low bar for plausibility.

So NINO goes looking for his dad, screws things up along the way, Beta Ray Bill and a few others have a few head-slapping “Doh!” moments as they observe his teen antic screw-ups, and the 18K of zombies who buy this clichéd nonsense will take to comic book forums and insist that it’s brilliant and original.  It’s like P.T. Barnum said, “There is a sucker born every minute.”  If you’re buying NINO, you’re one of those suckers.

Richard Rider Nova Gets New Hero Clix Figure

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20062:]]

While Marvel Comics continues to bury Richard Rider, we see the merchandising side of things continues to see the benefit of Nova as a new Hero Clix action figure will be coming out.

Check out the image below of Nova from the upcoming Hero Clix Avengers Assemble set.

The real Nova is also a part of the recently announced Marvel Super Hero Mashers action figure set, and fans voted Richard Rider into the Marvel Heroes game ahead of his lower-selling parody. Nova also sold better than any of the Guardians of the Galaxy Infinite movie figures, and he wasn’t even in the film.

Via HeroClix.com (thanks to MysterioHelmet in the CBN forums):

Nova once again brings one of our more popular traits back to the forefront, Share Through the Worldmind.  This trait allows for characters friendly to Nova with the Nova Corps keyword the use of Empower; however, this use of Empower can only affect other friendly characters with the Nova Corps keyword.  With so many characters now possessing that keyword stretching back to the Marvel HeroClix Galactic Guardians set, you’ll be able to construct an incredibly synchronous Nova Corps squad to take advantage of the traits shared by members of the Corps!  And don’t forget the Nova Helmet relic, which grants those holding the relic the Flight ability, Charge, and the Nova Corps keyword!

Review: NINO #28

What is wrong with Marvel?

They actually think this “story” about playing “hot potato” with “The Black Vortex” is entertaining?

Silly, yes.  Entertaining, no.  Unless, of course, you’re an easily satisfied zombie who will buy anything and take to the internet to defend it to the end.

It’s just typical Duggan in a typical NINO story.  Screw-up after screw-up that somehow works itself out in the end mostly due to NINO’s dumb luck or another NINO screw-up that fortuitously ends well.  Of course, the requisite cardboard villains written as if they belong in an episode of Scooby-Doo are prominently on display as always.

Of course, Duggan, not satisfied with his appearances on forums to insult Rider fans, has to throw in an insult to Rider fans in the body of the story.  Seriously, if there are any Rider fans still buying this trash, this has to be the final straw for you.  Join the rest of us in the boycott.

This is just another episode of Marvel Cosmic gone horribly wrong.  It isn’t even cosmic, really, as the space setting is just incidental.  It’s just puerile, juvenile trash aimed at 8-year-olds and played as a farce for cheap laughs for chronologically older persons with the mentality of 8-year-olds (aka Marvel Zombies).

The art continues to decline.  Thane’s “googly eyes” turn what is supposed to be the only serious dramatic scene in this ultimately stupid story into yet another Scooby-Doo moment of farce.

Cancellation of this garbage can’t come too soon.  Marvel needs to man up and admit that this experiment has been a total failure.  Unfortunately, Brevoort and Alonso are in charge, so that will never happen.  Like NINO, you can only count on them to do the most stupid thing possible and double-down on the failed formula.  Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for Bonso’s Double-Down:  “Politically Correct NINO-ette (PC-NINO-ette).”   Join us in boycotting her, too.

More Good News: Marvel Not Keeping NINO Around As Long As Richard Rider

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19746:]]

We get further good news from Marvel Comics in regards to NINO and Richard Rider Nova.

We all know Axel Alonso, Jeph Loeb and the execs at Marvel made the decision to kill off Richard Rider Nova and fire the creative team that inspired a near billion dollar movie (Marvel Comics must be such a nice place to work at).

Marvel replaced Richard Rider Nova with NINO – “Nova In Name Only.”

As the Annihilation Richard Rider Nova series was a success (sales were not the reason for cancellation), it was no surprise that true Nova fans didn’t except NINO.

Jeph Loeb was quickly announced off of NINO with the publication of issue #2, which was due to low sales and not being able to justify Loeb’s paygrade.

And since issue 3 or so, NINO has been selling less than Richard Rider Nova.

As a matter of fact, NINO took a major dive when Gerry Duggan came on board – and get this – Duggan’s Hulk is also selling less than the Richard Rider Nova. Hulk who is an Avenger and is in billion dollar Avengers movies sells less than a character that didn’t appear in Guardians of the Galaxy – yet had the best selling action figure of the line! (we can only surmise Duggan’s paygrade)

Honestly, I can’t help but laugh-out-loud at Marvel Comics’ decisions these days. It’s ironic that under Joe Quesada, Marvel Cosmic prospered, while under former Deadpool editor (it shows) Axel Alonso, Marvel has become a parody of itself.

Regarding the good news, Marvel Comics recently announced that NINO is getting cancelled – but they also announced another new Nova – a young female NINO-ette (lol).

Now the latest is from a preview for NINO #28 where Duggan, who has been harassing Richard Rider fans on message boards, attempts to take a swipe at Richard Rider. Obviously Duggan – who can’t even keep Hulk sales up above a cancelled character – doesn’t write the issue particularly well as he leaves it open for NINO to take the brunt of the backlash, and it backfires.

NINO says he doesn’t want to end up like Richard Rider.

That’s good news to me, because that means NINO isn’t going to be around for 40 years or have  successful comic line or action figure line.

Adios, NINO.

And take Duggan with ya.

Bring Back Richard Rider as Nova and don’t support the replacements.

Review: NINO Annual #1

Silly, juvenile, disrespectful of Nova mythos and fans, and un-heroic – this book is everything you’ve come to expect of NINO.

At least NINO admits at various times in the book that he’s stupid and doesn’t know what he’s doing.  That places him in the company of the 19K of zombies still buying this trash.

Of course, Duggan either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that Xandar hasn’t existed as a planet for a long time now.  He blithely sends NINO and the Hulk on a selfish quest to repair NINO’s helmet.  Upon arriving at the somehow re-constituted planet of Xandar, they find a powerful alien who has enslaved the “remaining Xandarians” and is forcing them to perform heavy labor.  Again, Duggan either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that Xandarians are nearly identical to humans as he portrays the Xandarians as very alien.

Do you think NINO and Hulk do the heroic thing and free the Xandarians from slavery or make some attempt to resurrect Xandar?  No.  Hulk temporarily disables the alien slave lord, finds some parts to fix NINO’s helmet, then he and NINO selfishly and un-heroically leave the remaining Xandarians to be re-enslaved.  What a nice thank you to the culture who provided the loser duo of NINO and his dad their powers.  Pathetic.  Immoral.  But that’s why this trash is and ever will be “Nova In Name Only” – because no other being worthy of the uniform would ever behave so selfishly, un-heroically, and utterly disgracefully.

The art and coloring are mediocre with NINO continuing to look ridiculous in his manga-ized version of a Nova uniform.  The art used to at least distract readers from the atrocious writing, but even the art is slipping as this book comes ever closer to its recently announced cancellation date.  Given that NINO is a Loeb vanity project, it’s probably too much to hope that we’ve seen the last of NINO.  I’m not too worried about the upcoming politically correct NINO-ette – as she’ll be DOA.

So good riddance to NINO (and a hoped for quick riddance to PC NINO-ette).  Your final issue can’t come too soon and you won’t be missed.

Marvel Cancelling 33 Titles Including NINO

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19694:]]

Finally some good news for Richard Rider fans, but don’t hold your breath – more on that below.

With Marvel’s new Secret Wars event comes word the publisher is ending 33 titles.

Among those titles is NINO, Captain Ms. Marvel, Legendary Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon.

Sales for NINO and Captain Ms. Marvel have well been under cancellation levels for some time, and Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon have been dropping steadily.

The new Marvel “Cosmic” has been unable to sustain the readership that Abnett and Lanning enjoyed with their stellar run, of which Marvel Comics editor Bill Rosemann stated consisted of “rock solid sales.”

The bad news is that Marvel Comics continues to be going in the wrong direction with Nova, as NINO writer Gerry Duggan is on the new Secret Wars Infinity Gauntlet book, which like NINO, appears to be a mockery of the original. This time Marvel seems to be going with a parody version of Jim Starlin’s Infinity Gauntlet series that is inspiring the current Marvel Studios wave of movies (and for the record, Starlin had no idea and was never told about the Secret Wars IG series).

The new IG now features a multi-colored version of the Nova Corps (interestingly enough, DnA pitched a multi-colored Nova Corps prior to their 2007 Nova series) that focuses on a young black female NINO.

I’ll also comment on Abnett’s Guardians 3000 being on the list: The first issue saw high sales (much to the surprise of Marvel); however, sales quickly dropped on subsequent issues. It’s my opinion that going with Alex Ross covers paired with an anime/manga-inspired artist on the inside wasn’t the best way to go. I’ll also say that Marvel hasn‘t given Abnett an A-list artist since Brad Walker or Andrea Di Vito.

Check out the list of series ending prior to Secret Wars (via Newsarama) with, of course, some being relaunched:

All-New Captain America
All-New Ghost Rider

Faith No More Bassist Bill Gould Fan Of Richard Rider Nova

It’s learned that Faith No More bassist Bill Gould is a big fan of Nova.

The band has a new single coming out with “Superhero,” with Gould talking to Marvel.com about the song and Marvel characters.

“‘Superhero’ actually just started from the sound of the song, where it has these pounding drums and it has like this throbbing kind of pulse, and we just called it the ‘Superhero’ song. Because, a lot of the ways we write we visualize things,” Gould offered.

Gould continues with mention he was a fan of comics growing up.

“To put things into perspective, I ceased being a comic collector in 1976 but up till then, I was really into it for about three years. Like obsessively into it,” Gould said. “I had Silver Surfer #1, Conan #1 and #2, I had some really cool stuff.

“Nova was a big one,” Gould added. “That was my big hope for the future. I was hoping it would go another thousand [issues] into the series. Yeah, I was really into it. [When] I turned 15 years old, [I found out that] my next door neighbor really admired my comic collection. There was this scooter [he owned that] I really wanted to get, because I didn’t need a license to drive it, and I traded my entire collection for this scooter and I really regret it now.”

Gould also says he has renewed interest in Nova.

“I’m actually really interested now,” Gould said. “It’s funny because I hadn’t really thought of the Nova character until I heard I had this interview, and I was thinking back in my mind like, ‘what was I into?’ and I started remembering. Actually Nova now kind of has a cult following doesn’t it?”

Faith No More’s “Super Hero Will be available as a limited edition 7-inch single on March 17th, with the album “Sol Invictus” released on May 19th

Regarding Mr. Gould’s statements, Nova does indeed have a cult following as the fans of the character support Richard Rider even though Marvel Comics replaced the character with a lower selling and less popular version. Richard Rider Nova happened to be the best selling action figure of the Guardians of the Galaxy film (even though he wasn’t in the movie) and was also voted in ahead of his replacement for a video game. In addition, a new Richard Rider Nova action figure was recently announced at Toy Fair.

Cosmic Book News would like to recommend that Mr. Gould pick up the Annihilation Marvel Comics event that spearheaded Richard Rider Nova into the spotlight as well as the 2007 Nova comic book, which was written by the writers that inspired the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
