Green Lantern / Star Trek Comic Crossover Announced

Green Lantern is going boldly where no man has gone before as today at WonderCon, IDW Publishing and DC Comics have announced a Green Lantern and Star Trek comic book crossover.

Star Trek / Green Lantern: The Spectrum War will be a six issue mini-series hitting this July written by Mike Johnson with art by Angel Hernandez.

The series is described as: “Set in Star Trek’s 23rd Century, the balance of the universe will be tested when the Green Lantern Corps’ Power Rings come into the possession of certain Star Trek characters while a dark and powerful evil looms around every corner. Only the combined power of the Green Lantern Corps and the Federation stand any chance of stopping those who worship evil’s might.”

“We’ve looked forward to bringing these two iconic universes together for a long time,” said Greg Goldstein, IDW President and COO. “Star Trek and Green Lantern both share so many of the same science-fiction adventure themes and ideals, that a galaxy-spanning crossover like this is simply…logical.”

“Green Lantern is one of the most popular, storied characters in the history of comic books and a modern DC Comics icon. An entire universe of Green Lanterns and other supporting characters have grown out from his original adventures in the 1940’s, and this series really showcases the intergalactic scope of the franchise,” said Bob Harras, Editor-in-Chief of DC Comics.

DC Killing Off Kyle Rayner Post-Convergence?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19616:]]Green Lantern: New Guardians #40

Superman gets a hair cut, The GLC are getting lost, Sinestro looks to rise, Batman is – what he is, and now it appears Kyle Rayner is getting killed off.

Say what you want about DC Comics following their upcoming Convergence event, but someone at DC obviously has a set of cajones to go with all these changes.

DC will be launching a new Omega Men series in June with the solicit for the first issue reading as follows:

The Omega Men are back in an all-new series! They’ve murdered White Lantern Kyle Rayner and now, the universe wants them to pay! Who are these intergalactic criminals – and is there more to their actions than meets the eye?

With the GLC missing along with John Stewart, and apparently Kyle Rayner dead, that only leaves Hal Jordan in the “regular” DCU.

However, Hal seems to be having issues of his own as he apparently drops the ring following Convergence.

DC also drops most of the GL titles as technically following Convergence there is only one with Green Lantern: The Lost Army (two if you count Sinestro).

Things don’t look good for the Corps.

New Details On Sinestro & Green Lantern Post-Convergence

DC Comics has released the covers and solicits for the two Green Lantern titles post-Convergence.

Cullen Bunn is writing Green Lantern: The Lost Army (art by Jesus Saiz and Javier Pina) and Sinestro (art by Brad Walker).

Bunn told Newsarama that 99% of the GLC goes missing in a different universe with Hal left behind, and now Sinestro thinks the time is right for the Sinestro Corps to shine.

Check out the solicits and covers:

GREEN LANTERN: THE LOST ARMY #1
Imagine waking up in a strange place where you didn’t recognize anything, and everyone you knew and loved was nowhere to be found. Now imagine that you are a Green Lantern. The rest of the Corps is missing, you don’t know where you are and there’s not a Power Battery to be found for as far as your ring can scan. Where are you? How did you get here? Those are just two of the many questions facing our heroes.

Starring John Stewart, Two-Six, Kilowog and Arisia, and featuring a surprise guest-star we promise you’ll never predict, LOST ARMY is an incredible journey of discovery, survival, morality and heartbreak. Never has the Corps been challenged in this way – and not everyone is going to make it home!”

SINESTRO #12
There’s a traitor in the Sinestro Corps who has set New Korugar on a path to certain destruction! The smart move would be to evacuate the Korugarian refugees from the planet, but Sinestro knows finding the identity of the traitor is more crucial, which leads to an unexpected betrayal from someone you would never expect, and a punishment from Sinestro that will alter someone’s life irrevocably!

Chris Pine Rumored For Green Lantern

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19580:]]

Rumors have been circulating regarding the next Green Lantern.

Some rumors have said Michelle Rodriguez is next in line (which she shot down) while others are stating John Stewart may be the character that Zack Snyder goes with in Justice League.

Now the latest is that Star Trek’s Chris Pine may be up for the role of Hal Jordan Green Lantern.

Latino Review is stating Chris Pine is a name they keep hearing and has been floating around for the new GL.

Pine, of course, is known for playing another outer space character with Captain Kirk in the new JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movies and will be starring in Star Trek 3.

More than likely, Pine as Green Lantern isn’t happening, would be my guess.

No Batman or Harley Quinn For Arrow

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19573:]]

Exectutive producer and showrunner of Arrow, Marc Guggenheim, recently attended the Long Beach Comics Expo in Long Beach, CA.

Guggenheim was part of a panel where he discussed Arrow and working with DC.

Before we dive into Arrow, Guggenheim commented on the 2011 Green Lantern movie noting that he didn’t have control over the film (which explains a lot).

“With ‘Green Lantern,’ we [he and Co-Showrunner Greg Berlanti] really learned the lesson of control. We didn’t have it on ‘Green Lantern.’ It got taken out of our hands at a certain point, and stuff happened. The difference between features and TV is that on TV, as a writer, you’re writing for your life. Every eight business days, there’s a new script due, and as a showrunner, it all goes through your pen. Sometimes what’s getting shot is literally your first draft. At the same time, it’s getting shot.”

Now on to Arrow, as the series has a darker tone many have compared it to Batman; however, it’s learned the Caped Crusader won’t be appearing any time soon.

We have a great relationship with DC. We sort of navigate with DC which characters in the toy box we have access to. Obviously, ‘Gotham’ has Batman covered… At the same time, DC [recognizes [Green] Arrow doesn’t have a fantastic rogues gallery — we’ve got Count Vertigo, and we’ve used him twice. They know that we need access to other characters, but it’s a give and take. The bottom line is, Batman won’t appear on “Arrow” before he appears on “Gotham,” and “they’ve got about twenty more years to go.”

Guggenheim also answered a fan question about seeing more from Harley Quinn, who was more of an Easter Egg in a Suicide Squad episode of Arrow.

Between “Gotham” and Margot Robbie playing her in the upcoming Suicide Squad film, he stated that the closest they could come is the “wink and a nod” from last season.

A superhero team spinoff is in the works, which is presently untitled, but Guggenheim offers it isn’t called “The Brave and the Bold.”

It’s also learned that DC has plans for Ted Kord, the second blue beetle, as Arrow wanted to use the character prior to Brandon Routh’s Atom.

Aked if there’s a list of things that can and can’t be used (besides Batman), Guggenheim explained that twice a year they sit down with DC, and each has a list of characters they’d like to use or be used. Katana was a character DC suggested they use. Ray Palmer was originally supposed to be Ted Kord, but DC said, “No, we have plans for that character. How about Ray Palmer?”

Now Michelle Rodriguez Says To Write Our Own Mythology & Stop Being Lazy (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19427:]]

Lately, Hollywood has been replacing white characters with minority actors, and while their spiel is usually “the best actor got the job,” some think it to be a form of racial diversity.

Earlier saw Fast and Furious actress Michelle Rodriquez questioned about potentially playing Green Lantern, with Rodriguez laughing it off and suggesting Hollywood stop replacing white superheroes and come up with their own.

Now Rodriguez has taken to her Facebook page to further clarify her statements.

You can watch the video below or check out the text:

Yeah, guys, I want to clarify about my comment yesterday. I stuck my foot in my mouth once again, and I said that people should stop trying to steal white people’s superheroes. I guess it got taken out of context ’cause a lot of people got offended or whatever. I have a tendency to speak without a filter. Sorry about that.

What I really meant was that ultimately at the end of the day there’s a language, and the language that you speak in Hollywood is successful franchise. I think there are many cultures in Hollywood – that are not white – that can come up with their own mythology. I mean we all get it from the same reservoir of life. The fountain of life, and it doesn’t matter what culture you come from. I’m just saying that instead of trying to turn a girl character into a guy, or instead of trying to turn a white character into a black character or a latin character, I think that people should stop being lazy. People should actually make an effort in Hollywood to develop their own mythology. And you know what? If being American is your mythology, and the American culture is deep embedded into who you are and what makes you or the archetype that you are trying to portray in a Hollywood feature or in a comic book — so be that, but I’m just saying that the different cultures from around the world that are in Hollywood – latin, black, asian, so on and so forth – considered “minorities,” because there are not a lot of writers representing them, they should start focusing that on making that a serious priority.

It’s not about taking Catwoman or Superman or Green Lantern or whatever these characters are and trying to make them fit to whatever cultural background you are. I just feel like it should be more creative than that. I think that people need to stop being lazy. That’s what I meant by my comment. You know, I’m taking it to heart as well. I’m considering this while I am out there coming up with projects to do and things to write. I just think it’s time to stop. Stop trying to take what’s already there and try to fit culture into it. I think it’s time for us to write our own mythology and our own story. Every culture. That’s what I really mean, and I am sorry if it came off rude or stupid. It’s not what I meant.

So cheers.

Michelle Rodriguez Slams Playing Green Lantern & Racial Diversity

A rumor or speculation surfaced online stating Michelle Rodriguez may be the new Green Lantern.

DC Comics recently introduced a new female Green Lantern by the name of Power Ring.

Michelle Rodriguez, known for the Fast and Furious movies, doesn’t pull any punches when asked about playing Green Lantern by TMZ in the above video.

“That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard,” Rodriguez said with a laugh. “I think it’s so stupid because of this whole minorities in Hollywood thing. It’s so stupid. Stop stealing all the white people’s superheroes. Make up your own. You know what I am saying? What’s up with that?”

Update: Michelle Rodriguez has released a video clarifying her thoughts.

Regarding minorities playing white characters, the biggest question as of now is whether the new Spider-Man will be black and/or latino.

We obviously see that Rodriguez, of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, would probably be against that.

Other notable characters that have been replaced include:

Nick Fury by Samuel L. Jackson
Aquaman by Jason Momoa
Human Torch by Michael B. Jordan
Electro by Jamie Foxx
Perry White by Laurence Fishburne
Jimmy Olsen by Mehcad Brooks
Iris West by Candice Patton

No Green Lantern For John Diggle In Arrow

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19202:]]

Bad news for fans of Arrow and David Ramsey that thought John Diggle might be a Green Lantern or even John Stewart.

Showrunner Marc Guggenheim responded to the notion that Diggle might become a Green Lantern following an interview where David Ramsey confirmed talks about it.

Guggenheim rains on everybody’s parade by saying it isn’t happening.

“It’s funny, I’ve spoken to David quite a bit about this issue, I know it keeps coming up,” Guggenheim told MTV. “I spoke to [writer] Geoff Johns at DC after that interview went viral. Basically, John Diggle is now a character in the comics… John Diggle is John Diggle. We’re not being coy and saying John Diggle is someone else, i.e. John Stewart. DC has other plans for that character. We love David, and we love the character of John Diggle that he’s created. We have really cool plans for him… they involve a wedding ring, but they don’t involve a power ring.”

While Diggle may not be a Green Lantern, Guggenheim does tease that current characters may become DC heroes.

“There are two characters who would probably fall into that category,” he said. “Were we to do it, they would be characters from the comics that you already know.”

Arrow airs Wednesdays on the CW.

Carrie Farris Back For Batman Vs. Superman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19102:]]

Captain Carrie Farris will be returning to Batman Vs. Superman.

Farris – spelled with an ‘a’ – appeared in Man of Steel swooning over Superman played by Christina Wren.

Now Wren confirms she will be back for Batman Vs. Superman as she tells PittsburghMagazine about the new movie.

“I can tell you that I think it’s going to be badass!” Wren said. “They’re just such an awesome team. The bits that I was on set for look fantastic; everyone in it is fantastic. It’s exciting; it’s high-energy; it’s high-action. They are addressing all of the things that they set up in Man of Steel.”

Fans of DC Comics immediately recognized the similarity between “Carrie Farris” and the DC Comics Green Lantern character “Carol Ferris.” Christina Wren is aware of it, too.

“So there’s some gossip; this has not been officially confirmed with me at all,” Wren explained. “But my character’s name is Carrie Farris; there’s a character named Carol Farris who’s the Green Lantern’s girlfriend and turns into this superhero, Star Sapphire. But I have no idea if that’s the plan; they’re not even slated to do a Green Lantern film for several years.”

Wren also says she filmed Batman Vs. Superman in Detroit, which might suggest the military will have a presence of some sort in Gotham City.

Watch: Christina Wren in Man of Steel:

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Arrow’s John Diggle Might Be Green Lantern John Stewart Says David Ramsey

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19073:]]

Fans of Green Lantern, Arrow, and David Ramsey have long speculated that John Diggle may actually be John Stewart.

The fan theory is that when Diggle was in the military, he changed his name (for whatever reason).

Now it’s learned that the theory might not be too far off as David Ramsey has confirmed there are talks that Diggle might become Green Lantern.

Ramsey confirms the Green Lantern possibility in a recent interview (via Screen Rant):

“Is John Diggle John Stewart? I cannot say ‘yes,’ and I cannot say, ‘no.’ I’m serious! I do know that there is serious discussion about whether or not this guy becomes John Stewart. But, I mean, I’ll say this: it is top secret. I’ve asked them and they’re like, ‘we’re working on some stuff.’ If that’s the case, it’s gonna be huge. This is the stuff they want to avoid. I think they don’t want anybody to know yet and they haven’t even told me. But they have told me that they are thinking about it and that they are considering it. But they’re not going to release anything yet. That’s exactly what they told me. Greg Berlanti told me that. Andrew [Kreisberg] and Marc [Guggenheim] have told me that. I haven’t spoken to Geoff Johns about it. But that’s the word from people directly involved in Arrow- that they’re working on something.

“Here’s the truth of it: if I knew, I would tell you I know the answer to that, but I’m not at liberty to tell you that. I would answer like that. I probably wouldn’t tell you anyway, but I would at least tell you that I know. I honestly do not know.”

Cosmic Book News was previously told that plans for Green Lantern in the Arrow universe are underway and that Green Lantern would crossover with The Flash. Just three weeks ago also saw mention there are plans for more spinoffs as well.

“Now, boy we’ve referenced Ferris Air a lot. It would be really cool to have Green Lantern,” Ramsey added. “Hopefully, that happens. I have no inside information, unless I do.”

Ryan Reynolds Talks Green Lantern & Deadpool

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19002:]]

Ryan Reynolds latest movie, The Voices, hits February 6th.

With Reynolds doing press rounds for the film, he has also been talking Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds previously stated they are doing Deadpool the right way and he hopes it’s R-rated.

Now Reynolds compares working on the Green Lantern movie to Deadpool in that when he started GL, there wasn’t even a script, but for Deadpool, it’s already ready and leaked online (via Yahoo).

Well, script. When we shot Green Lantern, nobody auditioning for the role of Green Lantern was given the opportunity to read the script, because the script didn’t exist. I’m not complaining about it — it was an opportunity of a lifetime, and if I were to go back and retrace my steps, I would probably do everything the exact same way. But script, that’s what’s different on this one.

We’ve had a script for three years. The script got leaked, and people even loved that. That says a lot — if you can create a script around a comic-book character that is directly within the canon of the character and be embraced. That’s a huge step in the right direction. I’ve since learned that a lot of superhero movies don’t really have a fully functioning draft of the screenplay ready until they’re already well into shooting.

Reynolds also lets it be known the reason Deadpool was recently green lit was because of the leaked Deadpool footage.

I was excited, because you can look back at an email chain from all of us, the core group involved in Deadpool, saying “We should leak this, f—-,” like three years ago. Saying, “Hey, if this thing is going to stagnate, one of us should just say ‘Whoops, I slipped it online by accident.’” And nobody seemed to want to nut up and do that, myself included. Someone did it for us, years later, when we all completely assumed it was dead in the water.

Now, we get to make the movie. We don’t get to make it with the budget of most superhero movies, but we get to make it the way we want to make it, so that’s even more exciting than having a catered lunch.

Deadpool has a February 12, 2016 release.

DC Comics Teases No Green Lantern Ring For Hal Jordan

March sees the end of Green Lantern CorpsGreen Lantern: New Guardians and Red Lanterns, but will it also see the end of the Green Lantern ring for Hal Jordan?

A promo featured in the back of this week’s DC comics features Green Lantern editor Matt Idelson offering up teases for what’s to come following Convergence.

For Green Lantern, Idelson teases, “Let’s just say for the moment, the ring will no longer be the thing!”

We get a possible further hint about what’s going on from the March solicit for Green Lantern #40 as Newsarama points out an “ultimate betrayal” is mentioned, with “what could make Hal Jordan turn on the Templar Guardians and the Corps?” questioned, in addition to “a status quo change that will impact all the Green Lantern titles!” stated.

Is it possible either Jordan will be stripped of his ring or that he won’t need his ring to access the Green Lantern power? Or even that Hal may be replaced?

Convergence runs April and May.

Regarding Idris Elba, Elba is another fan-favorite choice to play Green Lantern John Stewart, and some fans are hoping when Elba’s Marvel contract runs out, that Elba will join the direct competition and play Green Lantern.

WB has slated a new Green Lantern movie for 2020.

Deadpool Is Happening The Right Way Says Ryan Reynolds (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18885:]]

We get to hear Ryan Reynolds’ thoughts on the Deadpool movie as the actor recently spoke with MTV.

“I’m waiting for your Deadpool question,” Reynolds joked with MTV. “Yeah, I knew it was coming.”

‘Yes it is,” Reynolds responded when told it’s actually happening. “The budget isn’t what we hoped. This is the suit,” Reynolds continued to joke.

“It’s been a long time. It’s happening the right way. That’s all that matters,” Reynolds continued. “We don’t have the kind of money that most superheroes do. That’s great, actually. Necessity is the mother of invention. That’s why we get the movie we want to make.”

MTV then mentions Green Lantern stating there were some ups and downs.

“Yes, there were some downs,” Reynolds remarked with a laugh.

“You got to just have faith with the people you are working with,” Reynolds said when asked if there was any fear of failing again. “You have to have faith in the prep, and that’s all I’m doing. On this one, the prep has been eleven years, so you like to think you put your best foot forward. We’ll see.”

Ryan Reynolds also comments on the leaked Deadpool footage, which is what seems to have sparked renewed interest in the Deadpool movie and got Fox to greenlight the film.

“Yeah, I would have leaked that footage myself. No. I would have Fox’s lawyers so far up my ass, they could smell Wade Wilson’s feet. No, I didn’t leak it, but I would have. Looking back now. In a heart beat. I should just go home and scan the old hard drive and see what I got in there.”

Deadpool has a February 12, 2016 release and begins filming this March.

Tyrese Gibson “Committed” To Playing Green Lantern

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18881:]]

Yesterday saw Tyrese Gibson post an image of himself as John Stewart Green Lantern that a fan created, which went viral.

Now Gibson has posted a second fan-created image and stated he again wants to play Green Lantern.

“I am fully committed to suiting up for this adventure,” Gibson posted on his Instagram as well as including the Green Lantern oath. “In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light!!!”

Warner Bros. did announce a new Green Lantern movie, but not for another five years, to be released in 2020.

It’s thought we’ll get to see a new Green Lantern in either Justice League Part 1 (2017) or Part 2 (2020). Maybe Zack Snyder will even include a Justice League Easter Egg in Batman Vs. Superman?

The inclusion of Green Lantern brings up the question of where was the Green Lantern Corps when the Kryptonians, led by General Zod, attacked Earth? If Batman has already been around, is it safe to assume Earth has been protected by the Green Lantern Corps for some time? It will be interesting to see how/if Zack Snyder explains it.

Tyrese Gibson Rumored As Green Lantern?

Check out what Tyrese Gibson recently posted on Instagram – it’s a fan created image of himself as a Green Lantern.

It’s more than likely Tyrese saw the image and posted it teasing “rumor has it that,” but with Tyrese posting it, it obviously suggests the actor is interested in playing Green Lantern John Stewart.

It’s currently unknown what Zack Snyder is going to do with Green Lantern as it’s thought GL will be rebooted following the poorly received Green Lantern movie in 2011 starring Ryan Reynolds.

A Green Lantern movie is slated for 2020, which is still five years away and could feature either Hal Jordan or John Stewart, or maybe even both. It’s possible we could get a first look at the new Green Lantern in either the Justice League Part 1 movie in 2017 or even Part 2 in 2019.

New Green Lantern Rumored To Be Older & Darker; Not In Justice League Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18810:]]

A new rumor has hit the net this week surrounding the rebooted Green Lantern for DC’s Justice League slate of films.

Warner Bros. did announce a new Green Lantern movie for 2020, but the rumor is stating that Green Lantern won’t be in the 2017 Justice League movie.

In addition, the rumor has it that Zack Snyder is going to use a Green Lantern that is 45 to 55 years old and is described as a broken soldier with a darker personality. It’s also said Oa is “doomed.”

The rumor comes from the techtimes.com website who seems to say that the rumor has been online for a while.

It’s the first I’ve heard of it.

With WB’s 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds considered a flop, is it possible they are going to keep Green Lantern out of the Justice League movie and possibly wait for Justice League Part 2 in 2019 to introduce the new Hal Jordan, with the new Green Lantern movie to follow in 2020?

At one point in the comics, Hal Jordan was shown to be aged, with grey hair, which initially was a result of actual aging in the comic book, but Geoff Johns has since retconned that away explaining the grey hair as a result of Parallax.

Review: Green Lantern #23.4: Sinestro

Told from the perspective of ex-Yellow Lantern, Lyssa Drak, Green Lantern #23.4 delves deep into the forbidden history of Sinestro in an attempt to keep the destroyed Book of Parallax preserved for future generations.

Matt Kindt writes a mesmerizing tale of one of the most interesting characters in the Green Lantern mythos — Sinestro! Although it has the makings of the tried and true “origin” story, the way Kindt tells the tale in a warped perspective from Lyssa Drak’s narrative and the actual events rendered through Dale Eaglesham’s glorious art, is both fresh and invigorating! It is an enthralling tale of Sinestro’s beginning to his bitter “end,” touching upon the most important events in his lifetime and pinpointing the exact moments where the presumed “hero” began to slide into the depths of fear. Not only does Kindt re-kindle our love/hate relationship with Sinestro with this book but he also brings the amazing character, Lyssa Drak, back to the forefront as well. Twisted and forever changed by the events of this book, Lyssa Drak, is a character to look out for in the coming months in the Green Lantern family of books. For, where she goes, the legend of Sinestro is sure to follow!

Creative and beautifully drawn, Green Lantern #23.4 is one of the best books to come out of this “all villains” month event. It is smart and engaging and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to re-familiarize themselves with the greatest villain ever created in the history of Green Lantern!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for 5/22/2013

The Top of the Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This is the weekly “quick pick” of the best 5 comics to hit the shelves! Whether they are riddled with action, have the best dramatic sequences, blast you with a bevy of shock and awe or make you feel like a child again, these are the books EVERYONE should be reading! This “DOC’s” prescription for having the best week possible — begins with these Top 5 books! (In no particular order!)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7951:]]

1. Green Lantern #20 (DC): So, we may already know the final outcome due to a “shipping issue,” but this is book isn’t just about the end of the “Wrath of the First Lantern” crossover. This is the final farewell to writer, Geoff Johns! The man who brought Hal Jordan back from the dead, created the rainbow rings, dredged up Nekron from the depths of mediocrity and gave fans THE best run on GL in decades! This issue will touch on everything Johns has brought to the book from day one and will leave fans clamoring for more! As he paves the way for Robert Venditti to take over the book, fans cannot help but feel a bit melancholy over his departure. Geoff Johns has become synonymous with Green Lantern and he will be sorely missed. Thanks Geoff, it’s been a hell of a ride!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7952:]]

2. Occupy Comics #1 (Black Mask Comics): A collaboration of more than fifty of the best writers and artists in the business, this artistic tribute and sponsor of the Occupy Movement is more than just a comic — it is a record of modern history as it happens! A volunteer based anthology of prose, art and true comic form, Occupy Comics, was funded by a Kickstarter program last year and will eventually be turned into a hardcover edition. With ground-breaking creators like Alan Moore (Watchmen), Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), David Lloyd (V for Vendetta), Mike Allred (Madman) and David Mack (Kabuki) at the reigns, this is a veritable “who’s who” of the beset of the best! So, let your money speak for something more and get Occupy Comics #1!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7953:]]

3. Half Past Danger #1 (IDW): You want to know what this comic is all about? It would actually be easier to tell you what it isn’t about! This is Stephen Mooney’s epic pulp noir tale that includes everything a comic fan could want! Protagonist, Tommy ‘Irish’ Flynn must keep his troops alive through a tour of the South Pacific in 1943, but it isn’t just the German army that is a threat. They need to look out for DAMES – DINOSAURS – and – DANGER – as this yarn completely blows you away! A fantastic read that will remind you of great comics from the past!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7954:]]

4. Daredevil #26 (Marvel): Mark Waid has been turning the screws on Matt Murdock as of late, but it is the story he has been telling about Foggy Nelson that has been riveting! Foggy, DD’s best friend and confidant, has been diagnosed with cancer and no amount of super powers can help him. It is the soul searching and the bravery he finds in the faces and minds of children in the hospital that truly gives him a fighting chance. Waid breathes reality into the comic world as we empathize with these characters and we, and Foggy, are stronger for it! Plus, we finally find out the TRUE fate of a classic DD villain! No spoilers — I think you can “hit the mark” all on your own!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7955:]]

5. Lobster Johnson: Satan Smells A Rat (Dark Horse):  Yes, I LOVE pulp noir stories and you should too! Mike Mignola returns to his justice branding vigilante in this new one-shot revolving around the murders of skid row bums. It is up to Hellboy’s boyhood idol to find the diabolical fiend that’s been dumping bodies and slap them with the burning claw of justice! Buy it for the name, love it for the all out zaniness!

Review: Green Lantern Corps #16

Guy Gardner sits depowered in a prison cell, kicked out of the Green Lantern Corps, and a blight on the brilliant Gardner family name. But it doesn’t matter what has been done to you or how people perceive you, it matters what burns inside you. And what burns inside Guy Gardner is the heart of a hero!

Peter J. Tomasi takes one of the best cosmic team books and boils it down to one man and what it truly means to carry the moniker of “hero.” Tomasi has taken a character that has been seen as a joke, a third rate GL and made him one of my favorite characters by instilling in him a sense of “never say die” attitude. This attitude is what makes any normal man stand up and take charge of a situation where others freeze in fear. This attitude is what makes you a person others can rely on, this attitude makes you a “hero.” And that is exactly what this issue is about.

Faced with the force of the Third Army, Guy must make tough decisions in order to not only save others but his family as well. It is a great character piece that shows that it doesn’t take super powers or cosmic rings in order for you to stand up against insurmountable odds, all it takes is heart. And when new GL Baz shows up with his trainer B’DG, the subtle clash between Guy and Baz makes for some great comedic moments! Plus, John Stewart is still on the trail of the pieces of Mogo and he finally realizes all may not be right on Oa.

All in all, a great look into a broken GL and another link in to the tale of “Rise Of The Third Army.” But remember to read Green Lantern #16 BEFORE you dive into this one! And be sure to prepare yourself for the epic conclusion of “Rise Of The Third Army” in the pages of Green Lantern Corps Annual #1 on sale next week!
