Simon Kinberg Compares X-Men Legion TV Series To Breaking Bad

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22988:]]

Fox is currently developing two new TV series based on X-Men properties with Hellfire Club and Legion.

Now we get some details from X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg about the series as well as Gambit.

Regarding Gambit, Kinberg describes it as a “heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”

Kinberg told Collider the following about Legion and Hellfire Club, going so far as to compare Legion to Breaking Bad (yes, Kinberg was involved with Fantastic Four).

“Legion and Hellfire are both super active. Hellfire we’re hoping to be shooting at the beginning of next year, the pilot. It’s been extraordinary working with Noah Hawley [on Legion], who I think is a straight up genius. Actually the idea forLegion, it began in conversations with Lauren Schuler Donnerand Bryan Singer and Noah me, but I remember I was actually in Moscow last year about to go into a dinner, I was there for the Days of Future Past premiere, and I was sitting in a car outside a restaurant about to go into dinner. It was really early on in the process, like one of the first conversations, and Noah and I were on a call just the two of us just riffing ideas, and I was sitting outside what I thought was gonna be like a 10 minute call and I ended up sitting out there for three and a half hours, missing the dinner. Everybody had not only had the dinner but went home, and I just got off that call being like, ‘It’s midnight in Moscow but we have to make this show with this guy because he’s so brilliant.’ So that’s really ramping up now, the production’s ramping up to start shooting at the beginning of the year with FX.”

“I mean the thing that’s cool and that’s the hope in branching out to TV is that we can tell these X-Men stories in a slightly different way and even with a slightly different tone. It’s one of the thing we’re kind of doing in the different movie franchises. I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies. The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way. So the TV shows give us an opportunity to go even further and certainly what I’m seeing on Legion with Noah and FX is an intent to do something completely original in the genre, in some ways to sort of blow up the paradigm of comic book or superhero stories and almost do our Breaking Bad of superhero stories.”

“The Hellfire script we have an amazing writing team, really two writing teams working together on it, and also that will shoot next year.”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22939:]]

Following Rupert Wyatt having left the project, it’s now being reported Doug Liman will direct the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum.

Joe Cornish, Shane Black and F. Gary Gray were all once said to be up to direct the X-Men movie as well (via THR).

Doug Liman is known for Edge of Tomorrow, Jumper, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity.

No Anna Paquin For Gambit Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22255:]]

While Gambit and Rogue have a steamy relationship in the comics, it won’t be seen on the big screen.

Anna Paquin, who played Rogue four times in the X-Men movies, makes it known at least she won’t be appearing the Channing Tatum Gambit movie.

“No,” Paquin responded when asked by a fan on Twitter if she was going to be in Gambit.

Of course it’s always possible Rogue could be recast, but it’s probably more feasible that Rogue isn’t even in the script as Léa Seydoux is rumored to be playing the lead role as Gambit’s love interest, Bella Donna.

Anna Paquin recently appeared as Rogue in X-Men: Days Of Future Past and saw additional footage added in the “Rogue Cut” version.

Gambit has an October 7, 2016 release. Fox is currently looking for a new director following the departure of Rupert Wyatt.

Director Rupert Wyatt Leaves Gambit

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22145:]]

Following the earlier rumors of Channing Tatum dropping out of Gambit (which turned out to be not true), now director Ruper Wyatt has departed from the movie.

THR cites a changing script, ballooning budget and extended shoot as reasons for Wyatt leaving Gambit.

Deadline has more of the same in that the change in production date of November to March caused a conflict with another movie Ruper Wyatt is attached to.

Wyatt did release the following statement:

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

It is noted Fox is currently eagerly looking for a new director.

Gambit has a planned October 7, 2016 release also said to star Léa Seydoux.

In the comics, Bella Donna is the long time love interest of Gambit and daughter to the leader of the Assassin’s Guild, the rivals to Gambit’s Thieve’s Guild.

Channing Tatum Signs On For Gambit

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21589:]]

Despite the recent report that stated Channing Tatum was exiting the Gambit role, it’s now said Tatum has closed the deal to star as the Ragin’ Cajun.

THR reports the move was actually widely expected, despite the earlier rumor.

It is stated that Tatum and Fox ran into a few issues during negotiations, but it’s said such back-and-forth is a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking.

It’s further said Tatum’s involvement in Gambit wasn’t really in any danger because the actor had already invested so much in wanting to play the character.

Tatum is attached to play Gambit and produce, and also recently appeared at Comic-Con.

Apparently, the main issue involving getting Tatum signed was backend compensation.

The report also mentions that Fox considers Gambit a major character – on par with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine – and it’s suggested Fox wants Tatum on board as Gambit for the long haul, possibly up to ten years or so.

What remains to be seen is how everything gets figured out in regards to story and connections to the rest of the X-Men universe, but the Gambit movie has an October 7, 2016 release with Ruper Wyatt directing.

Channing Tatum Said To Be Leaving Gambit

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21517:]]

It’s being reported the Gambit movie is in jeapardy of falling apart as Channing Tatum is planning on leaving the movie.

The Gambit movie has been talked about and in the works for the past couple of years with Tatum rather enthusiastic about the movie while speaking about it in interviews.

The Wrap reports that it’s unknown why exactly Channing Tatum plans on leaving Gambit other than stating sources have filled them in that “something is up” with it suggested Tatum may have his eye set on bigger projects that may include directing.

It’s said director Rupert Wyatt may need to cast another leading man for the role of Gambit. The studios has currently been testing young actresses as the female lead, including Lea Seydoux.

It’s suggested that Tatum could possibly stay on board Gambit in a producing capacity, but that is unknown as well.

The news comes as a surprise as Tatum recently appeared at Comic-Con with Bryan Singer and the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse. In addition, Gambit has a planned October 7, 2016 release, so it needs to begin filming soon.

No Gambit For X-Men: Apocalypse

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21057:]]

We finally have a definitive answer whether or not Gambit will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Following the news that Rupert Wyatt will be directing the Gambit movie, Channing Tatum took part in a Reddit fan Q&A where the actor was asked if he was going to appear in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Tatum responded with: “No ma’am, or sir. I Definitely will not.”

Tatum continued by answering a second question about Gambit with talk of Rupert Wyatt coming on board and mention Gambit will be different than the Marvel movies which feature popular characters.

“We finally found someone that I really believe wants to make Gambit, it will be the second standalone character. And I just really think because Gambit is not the most popular or the biggest hero, I think there’s a really unique opportunity. Marvel’s done a lot of great movies that have made a ridiculous amount of money, and it’s always good to figure how to change the form.”

X-Men: Apocalypse has a May 27, 2016 release; Gambit has an October 7, 2016 release.

Rupert Wyatt To Direct Channing Tatum Gambit Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20998:]]

It’s being reported that Fox Studios has named Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) as the director on the Gambit movie, which will star Channing Tatum.

EW.com announced the news with mention Tatum will also produce along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg.

The Gambit movie has a scheduled release date of October 7, 2016.

No plot details weere mentioned in the report, but Channing Tatum previously let it be known the Gambit movie will be an origin story.

It’s also unclear if Remy LeBeau will be featured in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse as Tatum also previously stated he wasn’t sure if he wanted to introduce the character in a cameo role.

While the character of Gambit appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s guessed the appearance will be more or less skipped over, much like with what Fox is doing with Deadpool.

Channing Tatum Gambit Movie Will Be Origin Story

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20739:]]

Channing Tatum offers an update regarding the upcoming Gambit movie, which has a planned 2016 release.

Tatum is featured in the latest issue of Empire Magazine where the actor confirms the Gambit movie will be an origin movie, but exactly in what vein remains to be seen.

I love Gambit. I grew up in the South; my father’s from Louisiana. We’d go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture. So I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He’s kind of a tortured soul and he’s not a good guy. But he’s not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!

Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it’s killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we’re going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It’s always about saving the world , but maybe we’re going to shift things a liittle but. There’s so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I’m super excited.

It’s still up in the air whether Gambit will be featured in X-Men: Apocalypse as Tatum previously let it be known he wasn’t sure about introducing the character in the film. It’s possible, assuming our guess is correct, that with X-Men: Apocalypse rebooting the X-Men universe, that Gambit may just be featured in some sort of cameo role.

Gambit has an Ocotober 7, 2016 release.

Wolverine, Gambit & Synopsis Revealed For X-Men: Apocalypse?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20498:]]

The info may not be 100% accurate as it comes from a reported casting call website, but it’s possible a plot synopsis as well as the involvement of Wolverine and Gambit may be confirmed for X-Men: Apocalypse.

There has been no confirmation Hugh Jackman will be appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse – the actor only recently stated he is done with Wolverine following the upcoming sequel to The Wolverine.

Regarding Channing Tatum and Gambit, Tatum seemed reluctant to join the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse as he recently said he didn’t want the character to be introduced this way.

Of course, at the same time, everything could be a done deal, and we’ll see both actors in the movie.

The info comes from calltime.com:

It has all lead to this. All of the battles (both outside and within the group), action, relationships and time travel that the uncanny X-Men have endured have lead to this, their biggest story ever – X-Men: Apocalypse. Following the universe changing events of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past comes this epic mutant adventure and with it a number of casting opportunities for performers of all ages.

X-Men: Apocalypse will follow the super powered mutants battling their most powerful foe yet, the devious and devastatingly dangerous Apocalypse. This legendary villain uses his incredible abilities to alter his physical form, access other mutant superpowers and telekinesis to recruit a cult-like group called the Four Horsemen to be his servants and do his bidding in an all out war against the X-Men.

The cast of X-Men: Apocalypse will feature a who’s who of X-Men characters and some of Hollywood’s most talented performers playing them including Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) as Mystique, Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street) as Gambit, Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) as Magneto, Golden Globe nominee James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland) as Charles Xavier, Academy Award nominee Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables) as Wolverine, 2-time Golden Globe nominee Rose Byrne (Neighbors) as Moira MacTaggert, Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) as Beast, Olivia Munn (The Newsroom) as Psylocke, 3-time Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Nightcrawler, Alexandra Shipp (Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B) as Storm, Tye Sheridan (The Stanford Prison Experiment) as Cyclops and Golden Globe nominee Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens) as the villain Apocalypse.

Acclaimed director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) will be returning for his fourth X-Men film working this time from a script by Simon Kinberg (Fantastic Four), Dan Harris (Superman Returns) and Michael Dougherty (X-Men 2).

“X-Men: Apocalypse” has a May 27, 2016 release directed by Bryan Singer starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Channing Tatum, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Rose Byrne, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp and Oscar Issac.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit Might Not Be In X-Men: Apocalypse

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20175:]]

Channing Tatum recently attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas to promote Magic Mike XXL where he was also asked about appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse.

MTV caught up with Tatum where they assumed Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse was a done deal. However, Tatum cut them short and stated what he was trying to say was that he wasn’t sure if Gambit would be appearing.

“I was about to say I don’t think I want to introduce Gambit until you can explain who Gambit really is,” Tatum offered.

From Tatum’s comments, it doesn’t seem as if Gambit not appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse is definitely set (he could always be playing coy), and at this stage in the game, if Gambit’s role is still up in the air, more than likely it’s not that large of a role as X-Men: Apocalypse is due to start filming any day now.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” has a May 27, 2016 release; the “Gambit” movie is due out October 7, 2016.

Channing Tatum Gambit Movie Set For 2016

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18602:]]

Tatum will star as the mutant with the power to manipulate kinetic energy and is first expected to appear in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which hits four months earlier on May 27, 2016.

Channing Tatum has been involved with the role for quite a while and most recently said Gambit would be “something different” suggesting it would be more of an anti-hero movie than a superhero film.

The writer on Gambit is Joshua Zetumern who recently wrote the 2014 RoboCop movie.

Channing Tatum has Jupiter Ascending coming out next month as well and is involved in the sequels to Jump Street and Magic Mike.

Tatum’s name also surfaced with the Sony leaks where it was stated the actor is interested in a Ghosbusters spinoff with fellow actor Chris Pratt.

Fox also announced the third Planet of the Apes movie will be delayed a year to July 14, 2017.

Fox’s Fantastic Four 2 previously held the July 14, 2017 release, which will now be moved up six weeks to June 2, 2017.

Fox also gave the Assassin’s Creed movie a December 21, 2016 release which will star Michael Fassbender, with Justin Kurzel directing.

The P.T Barnum movie starring Hugh Jackman opens on December 25, 2016, and The Mountain Between Us starring Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike will open February 10, 2017.

Review: Gambit #1

The “Ragin‘ Cajun” has once again been given a chance to fly solo. But does the second most popular X-Men character “explode” on the scene or fizzle like a water logged firecracker?

Although fan favorite Clay Mann does an exceptional job rendering the suave, ladies man — it is not enough to bring anything new to the evolution of the Gambit character. Asmus‘ tech savvy Gambit, sans a few funny quips, is quite bland and comes off as a poor man’s James Bond. Charming women and conning crooks is the normal M.O., and that’s all we get from this tale — a repetitive look at the same ol‘ same ol‘!

Asmus does do a fine job finding the voice of Gambit. The internal monologues are well crafted and gives us insight into how Mr. Lebeau feels regarding being a teacher, hero and “sometimes” boyfriend to Rogue. But, all of that fades as the action ramps up and the story falls back into mediocrity. The con, the gadgets, the showmanship — it just isn’t enough to make this a story that we haven’t seen a thousand times before.

The tale is fun, if not for a lack of originality, but if you were looking for something more “explosive” in terms of story — you won’t find it here! Even the ending, both strange and surprising, doesn’t warrant a purchase of a second issue. Sorry, “Mon ami!”
