A report back in November of last year mentioned the Channing Tatum Gambit movie is going to be put back into development as it searches for a new director.
Now while updating the X-Men movie universe (via Deadline), writer and producer Simon Kinberg confirms the Gambit movie is still happening.
We are working hard on New Mutants, Gambit with Channing Tatum, Deadpool 2 and the new X Force movie where Deadpool is alongside Cable and other main characters.
Kingberg goes on to mention they are taking chances with the new X-Men movies, which is seeing success as the fans have responded positively.
We are taking chances and those chances are being rewarded commercially and critically. We’ll continue to keep taking chances. It means each of the different movies will have different reasons for being. The mandate that I talk about with the studio all the time is that they have to have emotion.
While Simon Kinberg doesn’t specifically mention Gambit, he does talk how all the X-Men movies will connect, so we can assume some time down the line we’ll end up seeing Gambit in another X-Men film.
I talk to the studio all the time about this and there is a plan for how these movies can connect and be a part of a larger narrative. It’s something that’s fun, exciting and it will be interesting to see how we marry the different tones that we’ve been generating in these standalone movies of the X-Men universe.
I think the truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone…’Deadpool’ feels like it exploded out of nowhere, but it was a 10-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those 10 years.
I hope that ‘Gambit’ doesn’t take 10 years, but it takes a little honing to get that tone and that voice exactly right. The character has such a specific voice in the comic in the same way that ‘Deadpool’ has a specific voice in the comic, that we want to make sure that we capture that voice on the page. Really it’s just about getting a screenplay that is worthy of that character, and I think we’re really close right now.
