New Star Trek Movie Launches With Goldstein & Daley Leading the Reboot

A new Star Trek movie is finally moving forward at Paramount, and it won’t look anything like what came before.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the team behind Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves — are set to write, produce, and direct a fresh take for the franchise.

A Completely New Star Trek Universe

Deadline reports the film is not tied to any prior Star Trek show or movie. It’s also unrelated to the Chris Pine Kelvin-timeline films that aren’t movie forward or any abandoned development projects. This lines up with recent comments from Skydance’s David Ellison, who said the next Trek film would feature a new direction instead of continuing Pine’s storyline.

Sources for the outlet say the movie will introduce new characters and a world separate from what fans have seen on Paramount+, meaning Paramount and Skydance are aiming for a clean slate.

Why Goldstein and Daley Landed the Job

Deadline says that Goldstein and Daley have built a reputation for reviving major IP by bringing humor, energy, and more accessible storytelling. Their work on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Honor Among Thieves earned strong reactions from fans and critics, with both projects praised for balancing character, action, and comedy.

Their tone is a big part of why Paramount wanted them for Star Trek. The franchise hasn’t had a theatrical release since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond and has struggled with multiple false starts. These two bring a style that Paramount and Skydance see as a way to recharge the series for a new audience.

Strong Ties To Paramount And Skydance

The duo already have momentum with both companies. Dungeons & Dragons became one of Paramount’s highest-rated movies of 2023. And their upcoming Ryan Reynolds action-comedy Mayday — produced with Skydance and Apple — has reportedly tested extremely well ahead of its 2025 release.

Their existing relationship made them the top choice to relaunch Trek on the big screen.

What Happens Next

Plot details are still locked down, but the mandate is clear: new era, new cast, new vision. After years of stalled projects, Paramount appears ready to reboot Star Trek theatrically with a tone closer to Goldstein and Daley’s signature style.

More updates should land once the script moves forward and the studio begins casting.
