Paramount Dumps J.J Abrams ‘Star Trek’ Cast, Eyes New Direction

Paramount isn’t bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, or the rest of the crew from the J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” reboot.

Variety reports the studio wants a fresh “Star Trek” movie and has moved on from the Kelvin cast. That means no Pine–Quinto–Urban bridge reunion and no continuation of the 2009 universe.

This comes as Paramount is in transition and making franchise decisions tied to its future ownership, as we covered in the James Gunn/DCU article. Leadership wants recognizable IP with a clear strategy. “Star Trek” is part of that plan, but the reboot crew appears done.

What Paramount Wants From Star Trek Now

The Kelvin Trilogy — “Star Trek” (2009), “Into Darkness,” and “Beyond” — had mixed financial results. The 2009 movie opened big, but the box office dropped by “Beyond.” Attempts to revive Pine and Quinto stalled for years, including the scrapped time-travel movie with Chris Hemsworth.

Paramount now wants:

  • A clean reboot or new timeline
  • New cast
  • Modern franchise plan focused on theatrical, streaming, and global appeal

This mirrors moves across Hollywood: reset, recast, rebuild.

Star Trek’s Franchise Landscape

Streaming spinoffs kept “Star Trek” alive — “Strange New Worlds,” “Picard,” “Lower Decks,” “Discovery.” But Paramount wants a blockbuster film franchise again, not just shows on Paramount+.

A new film team and direction could align with broader changes if Paramount goes through a sale or restructuring.

It’s also been rumored that Paramount will be moving away from the Kurtzman Star Trek, especially considering Variety reports Paramount is headed in the “right” direction.

Rumors even offer that William Shatner may be back.
