In a similar move to what WBD did with Batgirl, Netflix has decided not to move forward with the Grendel series that is already completed and has canceled the show that is based on the Dark Horse comic book of the same name.
Grendel can still be shopped around elsewhere.
The Netflix Grendel series was to star Abubakr Ali, the first Arab Muslim male actor to lead a comic book adaptation where Ali plays the titular character, millionaire Hunter Rose and his alter ego, the criminal mastermind Grendel.
‘First Arab Muslim. Dreams come true and I’m a mess,” Ali posted on Instagram last year when the project was first announced.
The comic book was first created by Matt Wagner in 1982.
One of its stars, Andy Mientus, reacted to the news on social media.
Update: Abubakr Ali also responded on social media.
See below.
The series is officially described as: Based on Matt Wagner’s groundbreaking comic book series, Grendel follows Hunter Rose, a gifted fencer, writer and assassin as, seeking to avenge the death of a lost love, he goes to war with New York’s criminal underworld, only to realize…why beat them, when you can join them?
Warner Bros. Discovery canceled Batgirl which was almost finished and was directed by Muslim-European filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.
Excited for a future where more of us get to push boundaries and tell more and more stories. Til then, Alhamdulillah. #Grendel pic.twitter.com/GVe2MsCzB2
