Joss Whedon Still Considers Coulson Dead

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20189:]]

Coulson Lives!

Well, not according to director Joss Whedon who was responsible for killing off Agent Phil Coulson in The Avengers movie. Speaking with the UK’s mentalfloss.com, Whedon lets it be known that Marvel TV was responsible for bringing back Coulson, but almost seems to say that the movies and TV have different continuity, and that he still considers Coulson as being dead.

Whedon says Marvel TV brought Coulson back.

A lot of people come back in The Winter Soldier. It’s a grand Marvel tradition. Bucky was supposed to die. And the Coulson thing was, I think, a little anomalous just because that really came from the television division, which is sort of considered to be its own subsection of the Marvel universe.

Whedon says for the continuity of the movies, Coulson is still considered dead:

As far as the fiction of the movies, Coulson is dead.

Says he wasn’t happy that Coulson came back as it takes away from The Avengers movie:

But I have to say, watching the first one with my kids—I had not watched the first one since it came out—and then watching it with my kids and watching Coulson die but [thinking], “Yeah, but I know that he kind of isn’t,” it did take some of the punch out of it for me. Of course, I spent a lot of time making sure he didn’t.

Whedon offers there is no reference to Coulson’s death in Avengers 2:

And at the time it seemed inoffensive, as long as it wasn’t referenced in the second movie, which it isn’t.

Whedon feels that without death or loss during these great conflicts, they don’t come off as being real or sincere:

There’s a thing where you can do that so many times and there’s nothing at stake. But it’s difficult because you’re living in franchise world—not just Marvel, but in most big films—where you can’t kill anyone, or anybody significant. And now I find myself with a huge crew of people and, although I’m not as bloodthirsty as some people like to pretend, I think it’s disingenuous to say we’re going to fight this great battle, but there’s not going to be any loss.

Whedon does offer he is fine with it and is happy to leave it up to the fans:

So my feeling in these situations with Marvel is that if somebody has to be placed on the altar and sacrificed, I’ll let you guys decide if they stay there.

“The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” has a May 1st release.

Robert Downey Jr. & Avengers 2 Cast Respond to Birdman’s Director’s Criticism (Video)

Check out the above video where Robert Downey Jr. and the cast of Avengers 2 respond to criticisms made by the director of Birdman, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

If you are not familiar with Inarritu’s comments, the director stated superhero films are “cultural genocide” and “right wing.” Here’s the blub from the Deadline interview:

I sometimes enjoy them because they are basic and simple and go well with popcorn. The problem is that sometimes they purport to be profound, based on some Greek mythological kind of thing. And they are honestly very right wing. I always see them as killing people because they do not believe in what you believe, or they are not being who you want them to be. I hate that, and don’t respond to those characters. They have been poison, this cultural genocide, because the audience is so overexposed to plot and explosions and shit that doesn’t mean nothing about the experience of being human.

That’s what I am saying. Superheroes…just the word hero bothers me. What the fuck does that mean? It’s a false, misleading conception, the superhero. Then, the way they apply violence to it, it’s absolutely right wing. If you observe the mentality of most of those films, it’s really about people who are rich, who have power, who will do the good, who will kill the bad. Philosophically, I just don’t like them.

“The Avengers 2” hits May 1st.

Joss Whedon & The Avengers Talk Batman Vs. Superman (Video)

With the release of the new Batman Vs. Superman trailer, Yahoo asked Joss Whedon, Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner about their thoughts on the trailer and heroes vs. heroes.

Evans and Renner haven’t seen the trailer,, but the two went on to make fun of Superman as being too powerful of a character.

“How does anyone fight Superman?” asked Evans.

With Renner adding, “I know, that’s what I don’t get. What are you going to do with a Bat-belt?”

“I feel like [Superman] would bulldoze our whole squad, they really wrote him unfairly. It’s not fair, he’s got too much,” Evans said.

Whedon did see the Batman Vs. Superman trailer and offered he can understand why hero would fight against hero and says he is really excited for the movie.

“I found [the trailer for ‘Batman v Superman’] interesting,” Whedon offered. “Because they’re bringing up a lot of issues that we bring up in Age of Ultron and I think it’s inevitable. People with power, who are good, do not always agree and it makes perfect sense for me that [Batman and Superman] would fight. And besides… Batman and Superman are gonna fight! I’m so excited! I’m so excited!”

The Avengers 2” hits May 1st; “Batman Vs. Superman” has a March 26, 2016 release.

New Avengers 2 Art Includes Gray Hulk

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18847:]]

It might be just artist interpretation, but check out new art below released by Marvel for The Avengers 2 where one of the posters features the Gray Hulk.

The Gray Hulk was a smarter version of the Hulk in the Marvel Universe comics, but also the version in the Ultimate Comics.

Footage from the Avengers 2 seemingly revealed Ruffalo’s Hulk colored gray (see above) leading to speculation that something goes down to cause the Hulk to transform into a different version of himself.

Watch: Robert Downey Jr. Walks Out On Interview

This is a big-time a-hole move on the part of the interviewer.

Watch above as Robert Downey Jr. participates in an interview promoting The Avengers 2.

The interviewer mentions RDJ is here to promote the movie, but then asks if he can ask about RDJ personally.

We see that RDJ gets rather uncomfortable and looks over to (whom I am guessing) is his publicist or PR person (who should have stopped the interview right there).

RDJ replies to the interviewer he has as much time as anyone, with the interviewer remarking they have 3 minutes left on their agreed upon time allotment.

The interviewer then asks Robert Downey Jr. about his past with drugs and alcohol – and asks if he is free of all of that.

The camera even zooms in on RDJ’s face as we see RDJ getting obviously more and more uncomfortable.

Robert Downey Jr. then questions – “what are we doing?” – and ends the interview.

It is a rather d— move on the part of the interviewer. Sure, you can argue he can ask whatever he wants, but these type of interviews are set-up beforehand and used for promotional purposes. We even see the interviewer mention the purpose of the interview is for promoting the movie, and they had a specified amount of time. Notice how the cameraman recognizes how uncomfortable RDJ is getting as he zooms in on his face at that moment? I believe the interviewer is known for being a d—-bag and had run-ins with Tarantino and Godfrey Bloom; RDJ and his people maybe should have skipped this guy.

The interviewer, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, does, however, claim on Twitter they discussed the questioning with RDJ’s PR people stating, “We’d told the PR we’d like to talk about the movie and his life.”

Obviously “life” could mean a whole hell of a lot.

Guardians 3000 Not The Title For Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Says James Gunn

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20177:]]

A few days ago it was reported the title for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is Guardians 3000.

Guardians 3000 is a current Marvel comic book from the writer who inspired the original movie, Dan Abnett, so it seemed a possibility.

Now, however, director James Gunn has taken to Twitter to shoot down the rumor.

“BTW – I’m getting a lot of questions – there is NO truth to the rumor GotG2 is called Guardians 3000. I don’t know where @prodweek got that,” Gunn tweeted.

It was thought that if Guardians 3000 was the title to the sequel, that Gunn may have been featuring the original Guardians, as Abnett’s comic centers on the characters from the future. There is a mystery surrounding the father of Star-Lord, which will be different for the movie than the comic, with Cosmic fans speculating Quill’s father might be Starhawk.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit Might Not Be In X-Men: Apocalypse

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20175:]]

Channing Tatum recently attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas to promote Magic Mike XXL where he was also asked about appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse.

MTV caught up with Tatum where they assumed Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse was a done deal. However, Tatum cut them short and stated what he was trying to say was that he wasn’t sure if Gambit would be appearing.

“I was about to say I don’t think I want to introduce Gambit until you can explain who Gambit really is,” Tatum offered.

From Tatum’s comments, it doesn’t seem as if Gambit not appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse is definitely set (he could always be playing coy), and at this stage in the game, if Gambit’s role is still up in the air, more than likely it’s not that large of a role as X-Men: Apocalypse is due to start filming any day now.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” has a May 27, 2016 release; the “Gambit” movie is due out October 7, 2016.

Marvel Phase 2 Contains Same Star Wars Easter Eggs

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20174:]]

It seems just about everyone missed this one as Kevin Feige has let it be known he included the same Star Wars Easter Egg in each of the Marvel Phase 2 movies.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Feige said he is a big Star Wars fan and offered:

So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.

Regarding the Easter Eggs:

Iron Man 3 featured Guy Pearce’s character, Aldrich Killian, getting his arm cut off by Tony Stark when he heats up Iron Man’s suit and the end of the movie.

Thor 2 features Thor getting his arm “cut off” by Loki.

Captain America 2 features a flashback where Bucky had his own arm cut off when he fell from the train in Captain America: The First Avenger.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy also had a similar Star Wars Easter Egg with Gamora cutting Groot’s arm off (this might be the enigmatic Easter Egg Gunn keeps referring to that he says everyone missed).

Those are the Star Wars Easter Eggs known to date as The Avengers 2 is yet to be released – so be on the look out for someone getting their arm cut off just like Luke Skywalker from Empire Strikes Back.

Henry Cavill Attends CinemaCon: Talks Batman Vs. Superman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20170:]]

Prior to teaming with Ben Affleck in Batman Vs. Superman, Henry Cavill is teaming with the 2008 Justice League Batman, Armie Hammer, for The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Both Cavill and Hammer were in attendance in Las Vegas for the WB presentation.

Regarding Batman Vs. Superman, Cavill stated, in the below video, he might be attending Comic-Con this July, but noted “things can change” with a a smile. Cavill also side-stepped questioning in regards to how Batman Vs. Superman was different than filming Man of Steel. Man From UNCLE co-star Armie Hammer then asked Cavill about working with Ben Affleck, with Cavill replying, he is “very excited, actually.” The two then went on to joke about not answering any more questions.

Update: A second video of Cavill from the event has surfaced (see below) where he offers he has seen just a little bit more of the Batman Vs. Superman footage, but says it wasn’t much as it was in black-and-white. Cavill also says he wouldn’t call it a Superman sequel: “This is Batman versus Superman. It’s a separate entity altogether. It’s introducing the Batman character and expanding upon the universe, which was kicked off by Man of Steel. It’s definitely an introduction to the character and ultimately an introduction to Justice League.”

At the WB presentation, Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujijara spoke to the exhibitors reiterating WB’s plans to release ten DC Comic book movies starting with 2016’s Batman Vs. Superman with more movies all the way to 2020. Tsujijara also made mention of the recently announced three LEGO movies and also said at least three Harry Potter spinoffs of the Fantastic Beasts series will be released, with the first due out November 2016. Following the presentation, the Batman Vs. Superman trailer was shown to the audience.

“While tentpoles and franchises are important to us and to you they are just one part of what we do. We’re also very excited about the wide variety of comedies, dramas, action adventures and horror films that we’re making,” Tsujijara said. “These films allow us to reach broad and underserved audiences and they create the opportunity for breakout hits like The Lego Movie, The Conjuring and that little film that exceeded everyone’s expectations, American Sniper… We’re committed to bringing you great films throughout the year, not just the summer and holidays…this time next year I will be here, or somebody who replaces me, will be talking about the great success we had with Pan in October.”

“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” has an August 14, 2015 release; “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” hits March 25, 2016.

The title for the third film of the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies may have become known with “Star Trek Beyond.”

TrekMovie.com spotted the title as it is registered with the Motion Picture Association of America; studios are required to register the title with the MPAA before the release.

They also claim they have it on “good authority” that “Star Trek Beyond” is the official title.

“Star Trek Beyond” fits with known story elements about the movie as the third film will head out into space.

Simon Pegg, who was brought on board to replace Roberto Orci, has stated it’s the start of their five year mission and they are out in space.

Idris Elba is rumored to be playing a Klingon, and Pegg recently offered in an interview that Elba will be playing a never-before-seen original character in a “kick-ass” role. Pegg also stated in the interview below they should start shooting in June.

“What we are hoping to do, is make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget where it came from,” Pegg said.

Star Trek 3” has a July 8, 2016 release date directed by Justin Lin.

Germany Movie Theaters Boycotting Avengers 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20163:]]

The Avengers will not be reassembling to battle Ultron in hundreds of German movie theaters.

It’s reported that up to 600 smaller movie theaters in Germany will not be showing The Avengers: Age Of Ultron to protest against Disney’s pricing policy.

According the the German website Faz.net (translate via Bing), movie theater owners are upset that Disney takes 53% of each ticket price.

The theater owners argue there has always been an unwritten rule that the pricing is flexible for the smaller theaters, but now that isn’t the case, so the owners just won’t show the movie.

Disney already nabs the 53% in the big city theaters.

It’s noted movie theaters across Germany recently upgraded their theaters and screens, with it mentioned it will take longer for the small movie theaters to recoup the costs.

The Avengers scored close to $31 million in Germany back in 2012.

“The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” hits May 1, 2015 directed by Joss Whedon starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Paul Bettany as Vision, with James Spader as Ultron.

Synopsis:

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
