Following its explosive weekend, A Minecraft Movie comes back down to earth for its first Monday, which sees a huge drop at the box office, suggesting the pic could be heavily front-loaded with its teen and youth audience. However, that Monday drop is likely to be expected.
A Minecraft Movie smashed all estimates when it opened this weekend to $162.7 million. The flick opened to $301 million worldwide. The opening managed to topple both Barbie and Super Mario Bros., both billion-dollar-plus movies.
Minecraft now holds the record for the best video game adaptation and is Warner’s third-best opening ever.
That explosiveness doesn’t hold for Monday, though.

First Monday plunges
A Minecraft Movie brought in $9.9M on its first Monday, a 78.5% drop from Sunday. The flick is currently at $172.6M domestically in its first four days and stands at $323.3M worldwide.
Barbie, Super Mario, Cap 4
Barbie‘s first Monday? A drop of 40.3% with $26.1M for a four-day total of $188.1M.
What about Super Mario‘s first Monday? A drop of 41.8% bringing in over $20M for a four-day haul of $224.7M.
The caveat? Barbie opened during the summer, and Super Mario opened Easter Weekend. However, kids tend to return to school that Monday after Easter, so that excuse might not hold.
A Minecraft Movie also failed to beat Marvel’s dud of a movie, Captain America: Brave New World, which brought in over $11M on its first Monday, but that happened to be President’s Day. Maybe not such a good comparison.
Versus 2024 movies
Looking back into 2024 for first Mondays: Despicable Me 4 brought in $9.2M, Wicked $15.7M, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 $10M, Inside Out 2 over $22M, and Deadpool & Wolverine over $24M.
Some others: Mufasa $7M, Dune $7.3M, Godzilla x Kong $7.7M, Kung Fu Panda 4 $4.5M, and Moana 2 $5.8M (83.2% drop that went on to make a billion worldwide).

Will A Minecraft Movie have legs?
Tuesday’s numbers for A Minecraft Movie will be interesting as that is a discount day at many theaters, which a young audience would likely take advantage of. A Minecraft Movie also has the benefit of being worthy of repeat viewings, so look for a bump on Tuesday.
Tuesday update: It’s reported Minecraft brought in $12.7M on its first Tuesday, which is indeed a decent jump. It’s also the fourth-biggest April Tuesday ever. However, it does trail both Super Mario ($15.4M) and Barbie‘s ($26M) first Tuesdays but at least demolishes Cap 4 ($6.3M).
This coming weekend will be a big test for A Minecraft Movie. If the opening was heavily front-loaded with teens and a young audience, the box office could drop pretty fast. However, there is no competition this weekend, so if kids and families want to see a movie, it’s going to be Minecraft.
