Paramount Skipping Comic-Con, Too

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21064:]]

In addition to Marvel Studios skipping out on Comic-Con, it’s become known Paramount will not be hosting a panel in Hall H as well.

The reason cited, according to THR, is that the studios decided the timing isn’t right for them when it comes to their upcoming releases.

Regarding Paramount, they have no new Transformers movie currently in the works and Star Trek 3 is yet to kick off, though they could have done something for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2; however, it’s still year out from the movie’s release. Terminator: Genisys also opens a week prior to Comic-Con, and the next Mission Impossible opens July 31st; so Paramount could have at least had something, but chose not to.

The same goes for Marvel, as Marvel could easily have done something for Ant-Man, which opens a week following Comic-Con, and Captain America: Civil War is currently filming; Doctor Strange is also in the works. It is being speculated Disney may be holding Marvel out for its own big announcement event, similar to last October’s Avengers: Infinity announcement.

While Marvel Studios and Paramount won’t be there, Warner Bros. will be there on Saturday night with their Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League panel.

In addition, Lionsgate announced they are bringing The Hunger Games and The Last Witch Hunter to the SDCC as well.

Disney has confirmed Star Wars for Friday, and Legendary and Fox Studios are expected to be there, with Sony putting up a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies panel through its Screen Gems label.

While Marvel Studios will not be attending, both Marvel Comics and Marvel TV (Agents Of SHIELD, Agent Carter) will be at the convention.

Comic-Con takes place July 8-12 in San Diego.

Marvel Congratulates Jurassic World For Beating Avengers

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21019:]]

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige tweeted out the following image congratulating Steven Spielberg, Universal Studios, Legendary Entertainment, producer Frank Marshall, director Colin Trevorrow and Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord for Marvel in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Jurassic World is currently at almost $550 million worldwide and also holds the record for biggest June opening, best single day gross for Saturday and Sunday, best opening weekend in the Summer and is the first film to score $500 million in a weekend.

Asa Butterfield Said To Be No Longer In Contention For Spider-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20967:]]

It’s now being reported that Asa Butterfield is no longer being considered for Spider-Man.

Apparently the info is coming from a reporter from The Wrap that was the same one to state he was 95% certain the new Spider-Man would be non-white.

However, every actor said to be up for the role by the Hollywood trade sites (and The Wrap) is white.

It’s said the list of actors to play the new Spider-Man is now down to Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz — with Marvel wanting Plummer while Sony favors Holland, leading to a casting standstill.

It’s also said that Asa Butterfield went on Reddit and made comments replying to fans about his potential casting, which may be a reason why Marvel let him go.

If I had to guess, I would say that Marvel already has their Spider-Man, and that they have had the actor for a while (à la Benedict Cumberbatch or Chris Pratt).

The new Peter Parker/Spider-Man is thought to be first appearing in Captain America: Civil War and is said to be wanted on set in July.

Really, nothing has been confirmed by Marvel other than the new Spider-Man will be Peter Parker in high school.

Now watch above as Charlie Cox and Deborah Ann Woll talk publicly about the Punisher in Daredevil for the first time.

The two are also asked about Elektra and Bullseye, but the pair state they have no idea.

Cox also says he doesn’t know about Infinity War.

Elektra is thought to be appearing in Daredevil due to leaked audition tapes, and most recently Jason Statham was rumored to be playing Bullseye, but Marvel TV shot down the allegation.

Daredevil Season 2 is currently in development and will be available on Netflix in 2016.

No Marvel Studios Stated Again For Comic-Con; Batman Vs Superman May Be Big

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20905:]]

Confirming what James Gunn said back in March, now Deadline is stating that Marvel Studios will not have a presentation in Hall H at Comic-Con.

The report mentions that “Kevin Feige just doesn’t have anything new to show,” which is a rather odd statement as Marvel has Ant-Man opening the following week in addition to Marvel filming Captain America: Civil War and plans for Doctor Strange to be released in 2016, with filming to begin later this year.

There is also the fact that Marvel could have revealed their new Spider-Man at Comic-Con.

More than likely, Disney is holding back Marvel Studios from Comic-Con for either their own event, similar to the Avengers: Infinity War announcement with Black Panther at El Capitan theater from last year, or the Disney D23 Expo a month after Comic-Con in August.

It is noted that Marvel Studios’ absence will leave Warner Bros. with, potentially, a significant presence of its own as Batman Vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League Part 1 are lined up. It’s possible Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and others may be at Comic-Con representing the DC movies.

For Marvel fans, while Marvel Studios will not be at the SDCC, Marvel Comics will be there with a booth and panels of their own.

Comic-Con takes place July 9-12 in San Diego.

Ultimate Reed Richards Rumored To Be New Hulk

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20885:]]

Yesterday saw Marvel reveal plans for their Fall reboot with EIC Axel Alonso teasing a new Hulk.

Now the identity of the new Hulk may have become known as Bleeding Cool is reporting the Ultimate Universe Reed Richards will be Marvel’s new Hulk.

Regarding the new Hulk, Alonso yesterday stated to various news outlets:

“The all-new Hulk … this character is certain to cause debate. The same people who went crazy with female Thor will have a field day with this one. Will there be enough room for him and Peter Parker? Read and find out. Wolverine will return to the Marvel Universe (again, this will be something big). Who is Wolverine? You’ll have to read and find out.”

“I’ll go ahead and tell you the Marvel Universe is about to see the arrival of an All-New Hulk—not a Hulk that you’ve seen before. And this development is deeply rooted in story. I am personally excited about it and its ramifications and it’s a fascinating story that I think Bruce Banner fans will definitely want to read. You’ll also see the arrival of a new Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe and you’ll also see—spoiler alert—a Wolverine emerge on the scene. I’m not going to say who, but a Wolverine that is certain to provoke reactions.”

“We’ve put the onus on the creators to come up with big changes in the lives of our characters, whether it’s Spider-Man or Ms. Marvel or Daredevil or the Hulk. You’re going to be looking at, in certain cases, new characters inhabiting those roles, and new characters dealing with profound changes in the relationships with others around them and where they live.”

“…Incredible Hulk like no fan has ever seen before. That’s certain to be a topic of conversation. All the same people who yelled about female Thor are going to do the same thing about this Hulk.”

Marvel Rebooting In Fall With New #1’s & Characters

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20864:]]

Following on the heels of DC’s own reboot attempt with the New 52 back in the Fall of 2011, now it’s official that Marvel is rebooting as well with the “All-New, All-Different Marvel” approach.

It’s reported Marvel will be rebooting with 55-60 new #1 issues this Fall, which will include a new Wolverine, new Spider-Man and a new Hulk, with titles written by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Mark Waid, Dan Slott, Charles Soule, G. Willow Wilson, Jeff Lemire, CM Punk and Nicole Perlman.

The new event follows Secret Wars and takes place eight months later.

Marvel EIC Axel Alonso and David Gabriel, SVP of Sales and Marketing, offered the following to various news outlets:

Update: Marvel has released a second teaser image.

Axel Alonso:

“This is the Marvel Universe. This fall, we will be inviting readers into a universe comprised of bold new landscapes populated with characters and teams both familiar and brand-new.”

“She [Kamala Khan] is Peter Parker for the 21st century. Peter Parker can be a 16-year-old Pakistani girl from Jersey City. If her story is universal, then people are going to come and read it. If it feels true, if it resonates, people are going to come.”

You’re going to be looking at, in certain cases, new characters inhabiting those roles, and new characters dealing with profound changes in the relationships with others around them and where they live.

“We’ve challenged everybody to come up with the right ‘Oh (expletive)’ reveal for their character to shake it up and make it interesting.”

“…Incredible Hulk like no fan has ever seen before. That’s certain to be a topic of conversation. All the same people who yelled about female Thor are going to do the same thing about this Hulk.”

“…they’re going to read the story and go, ‘Oh God, they’re on to something!’ “

“There’s no red sky, there’s no icecaps. But there will be new places on the map, there will be new characters that were just too cool to not bring back from ‘Secret Wars.’ There are new teams that are necessary to deal with new threats.”

“I think that the comics industry — certainly, we are — slowly working into a season model that’s not too unlike what we see in our favorite cable TV shows: a seasonal model that offers accessible entry points for new readers and is respectful of long-term fans. We did Marvel NOW! and All-New Marvel NOW!, which were both two very successful campaigns. And this is the latest campaign.”

David Gabriel:

“This is going to be an absolute game changer for Marvel. Similar to the most successful comics industry program of this century—Marvel NOW!, All-New All-Different Marvel is going to be presenting fans new #1’s for every title coming out during this event. This is a brand new beginning that honors our past 76 years, yet takes a bold step with daring, and accessible, entry points.”

“The real beauty of that is if you’re one of these fans who’ve been around for many years, it’s a great, exciting mystery. And if you’re these new fans who maybe only jumped in this year when you saw the Avengers movie, you’ll be able to pick up any of these comics and you will not need to know 50 years of backstory of anybody.”

WB Exec Talks DC Vs. Marvel Movies, Batman Vs. Superman & Wonder Woman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20853:]]

Warner Bros. film chief Greg Silverman offers updates on the DC slate of movies in an recent interview with THR.com.

Regarding how WB will differentiate the DC movies from Disney’s Marvel movies, Silverman offers:

We have a great strategy for the DC films, which is to take these beloved characters and put them in the hands of master filmmakers and make sure they all coordinate with each other. You’ll see the difference when you see Batman v. SupermanSuicide SquadJustice League and all the things that we are working on.

There is intensity and a seriousness of purpose to some of these characters. The filmmakers who are tackling these properties are making great movies about superheroes; they aren’t making superhero movies. And when you are trying to make a good movie, you tackle interesting philosophies and character development. There’s also humor, which is an important part.

Silverman also comments on Michelle MacLaren leaving Wonder Woman, with Patty Jenkins coming on to direct:

We had a very intensive process looking at everybody. Patty and Michelle were really the ones who came to the forefront the first go-round, so when things didn’t work out with Michelle, we all knew we had someone great who had expressed interest before. She came back and is doing a great job. But it was never about the best female director. She has demonstrated doing amazing work with female characters, such as in Monster.

Wonder Woman also had multiple writers on the project with each writing different scripts. Silverman explains the reasoning:

Every project is different. On some projects, we have multiple writers working together. In some cases, we put writers together who have never been a team together. And sometimes, there is only one writer whose voice is right. In the case of Wonder Woman, the right approach was to have writers pitching different scenes within the framework we created.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” hits March 25, 2016 followed by “Suicide Squad” on August 5, 2016, with “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League Part 1” in 2017.

Disney Playmation Avengers Trailer & Announcement

Today, Disney Consumer Products introduced the world to Playmation – the next step in the evolution of play, where digital gets physical and imagination becomes real. The groundbreaking system of toys and wearables uses smart technology to inspire kids to run around and use their imaginations, as they become the hero or heroine of stories from across The Walt Disney Company.

“Innovation and creativity are the driving forces behind Disney, and our goal is to inspire children to unleash the power of their imaginations through the stories we tell and the experiences we create. With Playmation, we’re taking the next step in that tradition – bringing the worlds of play, storytelling, and technology together – in a new and very exciting way,” said Leslie Ferraro, president of Disney Consumer Products.

She continued: “Playmation takes the best the digital world has to offer and uses it to create supercharged, real world play. This is play updated for today’s kids – bringing their imaginations to life as they go on active adventures alongside their favorite characters.”

Dreamed up by a team of technologists, Imagineers and storytellers from across The Walt Disney Company, Playmation is the culmination of extensive research into the world of play. A new third party study commissioned by Disney1 reveals that parents feel nostalgia for the way they used to play growing up and that they also have a desire to keep their kids active. The study also found that children enjoy being active—yet at the same time, they have a growing appetite for technology-infused products.

The online study of 2,000 families across the country shows that while almost all parents believe in the power of active and creative play, they believe technology is also an important part of growing up today. In fact, 9 out of 10 parents are open to new technology that could play a role in keeping their child active.

“The study highlights a major opportunity to meet the needs of both parents and kids with a new way to play,” said Kareem Daniel, Senior Vice President, Strategy and Business Development. “Playmation uses technology to make active, physical play even more fun. It puts kids at the center of our stories in a way we’ve never been able to before.”

Playmation also marks a new chapter in Disney Consumer Products’ long-term partnership with Hasbro. DCP and Hasbro collaborated on physical product design and manufacturing of Playmation. Hasbro’s record of innovation and consumer insights make them the perfect partner to ensure that Playmation is a truly ground-breaking play experience.

“This is classic play for the millennial generation,” said Jim Silver, editor in chief and CEO of TTPM. “Playmation takes the role play category to a new level of engagement with their breakthrough interactive play. It is the entry point into a new category of toys that bring digital experiences into the real world. With Playmation, Disney Consumer Products is going to raise the bar in the world of play.”

Playmation Marvel’s Avengers is the first in a series of systems in development around Walt Disney Company franchises, and will hit shelves this October. At launch, the Playmation Marvel’s Avengers Starter Pack will include five connected toys: one piece of Avenger Gear (Repulsor), two Power Activators and two Smart Figures – a Super Hero (Captain America) and a Super Villain (Iron Skull). Getting started is easy, strap the high-tech Repulsor Gear onto your arm (it fits adults, too!) and listen closely to JARVIS as he takes you through the tutorial on how to control your new Gear, inspired by Iron Man technology. Other Playmation Marvel’s Avengers connected toys that work with the Starter Pack will also be available separately for purchase at launch, with more on the way.

Also available at launch, is the AvengersNet app where you can register your Avenger Gear to see progress, explore additional locations and characters, and get access to new missions. New recruits to the Avengers can fight Marvel Super Villains including Ultron, Iron Skull, Loki, or join fellow Avengers Super Heroes like Black Widow, Falcon and more as they battle to save the Earth by running, jumping, ducking and dodging – whatever each challenge requires.

“With Playmation Marvel’s Avengers, the very best of Marvel storytelling is infused into every aspect of the system to further spark imaginative, active play,” said Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “Playmation offers kids a dynamic way to interact with their favorite Super Heroes – I wish it was around when I was a kid!”

Playmation Marvel’s Avengers uses familiar technologies including smart toys, wearables, wireless technology, motion sensors and more, but applies them in ways that are completely new to create an experience that’s never been possible before. The Repulsor Gear connects with the Power Activators and Smart Figures to take you on a variety of adventures through locations around the Marvel Universe, from the Avengers Lab in New York to the jungles of Wakanda. Playmation is purposely not tethered to an Internet connection so players can run around and explore each adventure from anywhere they want – a bedroom, living room or yard. With multiplayer modes, recruits can sync their Avenger Gear to tackle missions and combat arenas together, or face off in competitive play.

The Playmation Marvel’s Avengers Starter Pack will have a suggested retail price of $119.99 and will launch in October 2015 in the United States and Canada at mass and specialty retailers, select Disney Store locations and DisneyStore.com, and will be available for pre-order starting July 7.

Star Wars and Disney Frozen systems are currently in development for 2016 and 2017, respectively. Each will use a range of technologies to create a system based on the different ways that kids play and experience their favorite stories and characters from that franchise.

DC’s Omega Men Promises To Be Better Cosmic Than Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20824:]]

While Marvel Comics goes the PC and parody route with their cosmic titles, DC Comics writer Tom King is promising that The Omega Men will “tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The Omega Men #1 launches tomorrow as part of the new “DC You” line-up that follows the Convergence event.

Tom King spoke with USA Today offering some space-age details about The Omega Men, which previously hinted at the death of White Lantern Kyle Rayner in the special 8-page sneak peek preview (see below).

“A lot of companies have told the greatest cosmic stories over the past 20 years in comics using concepts invented for DC,” King said. “With this story, DC’s going to take back its stars. We’re going to tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The following plot is also revealed:

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Joe Staton‘s run on Green Lantern in 1981, the Omega Men are a group of intergalactic renegades from the Vega star system. In their new take on the team, King and Indonesian artist Barnaby Bagenda infuse the book with a rebels-vs.-empire concept a la Star Wars but grounded in an impactful reality inspired by King’s work in the CIA as a counterterrorism operations officer.

The Citadel rules the Vega system with an iron hand — King figures it’s akin to somewhere between the height of the British Empire and occupied Europe circa 1943. The Green Lantern Corps are cosmic cops protecting the universe but the Citadel is off limits to them thanks to some shady dealings.

In an act of revolution, the Omega Men use a video to broadcast the death of Rayner — although the screen turns to fuzz during the killing blow, and we never actually see the White Lantern‘s body — and that causes all sorts of problems. The Lanterns are incensed that they can’t come in and investigate, and the power players of the Citadel take it upon themselves to apprehend the outlaws.

Regarding the death of Kyle Rayner:

The Omega Men is definitely an ambitious project for King on the whole. He remembers having three editors on the phone when writing Rayner’s death: “It was like, ‘Oh, you can use Kyle Rayner,’ and I’m like, ‘Great, I’ll kill him!’ ”

King also says the story is on par with Star Wars, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, and that: “I’m taking that opportunity to write an incredible, epic sci-fi adventure that kicks you in the gut and keeps going.”

THE OMEGA MEN #1

Writer: Tom King

Art: Barnaby Bagenda, José Marzán, Jr.

Description:

The Omega Men are back in an all-new series! They’ve murdered White Lantern Kyle Rayner and now, the universe wants them to pay! Who are these intergalactic criminals – and is there more to their actions than meets the eye?

Charlize Theron Rumored For Captain Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20821:]]

Coming off of Mad Max: Fury Road, it’s now rumored 39-year-old actress Charlize Theron is in the running to play the titular character in the Marvel Studios Captain Marvel movie.

According to a source at the Hollywood gossip site OK! magazine, Marvel has been trying to get Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel, and that Charlize Theron is a favorite to play the role of Carol Danvers.

Reportedly, Jolie and Theron are close friends, and the rumor states that if Charlize Theron gets the part, Angelina Jolie would “almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal.”

The Captain Marvel movie still is more than three years off, with a release date of November 2, 2018.

Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve are both writing the Captain Marvel script together based on their individual treatments.

Angelina Jolie was first reported to possibly direct Captain Marvel, as well as Wonder Woman, about six weeks ago.

More Proof Marvel Is Blocking Use Of X-Men & Fantastic Four

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20818:]]

Last night saw it become known that the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters had been removed from the Marvel Universe characters poster.

Now further proof that Marvel is intentionally blocking the use of the X-Men and Fanastic Four comes from the official Facebook pages for the Marvel Mighty Heroes mobile game and Trends International, the official publisher of the Marvel poster.

A user on reddit took the screenshots of the following responses.

You will also obviously notice no X-Men and FF characters on the above Marvel Mighty Heroes image.

Disney seems pretty mum on the subject. I can’t recall any big comic book “news” websites or entertainment “news” websites asking Disney about it other than back in November with Disney’s Alan Fine and Fox’s Jim Gianopulos stating they have no idea.

X-Men and Fantastic Four Dropped From Marvel Universe Poster

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20808:]]

Who needs more proof that CEO Ike Perlmutter ordered the removal of the X-Men and Fantastic Four from Marvel?

Well, here you go as the updated version of the Marvel Universe characters poster is minus both of them (via Bleeding Cool).

The original poster is below for reference.

Fox Studios owns the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, so as the characters won’t be featured in the Marvel movies, Disney – under billionaire Perlmutter – has begun to yank the characters from comics and merchandise.

I’m wondering when the X-Men fans are going to wake up and start a Marvel comic book boycott like the Marvel Cosmic fans have been since Loeb and Bendys ruined cosmic because of the movies.

And to anyone at Disney Marvel reading this, Marvel was much better off back when the original poster was created (circa 2007) than it is now. Go back in your house, mouse.

Update: Trends International and creators of Marvel Mighty Heroes confirm Marvel dictating what characters can be used.

Review: Guardians 3000 #8

Today we bid a sad farewell to Marvel’s only true Cosmic book, Guardians 3000.

It’s sad, really, that Marvel wouldn’t commit to this true example of Cosmic, but will commit to all the truly terrible pseudo-cosmic books like GotGINO, NINO, etc.

This issue wraps the series and paves the way for a re-telling of The Korvac Saga during Marvel’s upcoming Secret Wars event.  The quality of the writing and storyline is light years ahead of everything else Marvel is calling “cosmic” these days.

Abnett weaves a complicated and riveting ending to what would now be called a “limited series” with the G3K crew playing a pivotal role in using Korvac to try to correct the damage being done to the universe by Dr. Doom at the start of the Secret Wars event.

The art is much improved from the first several issues of this series and should be much more palatable to most readers.

I am truly sad to see this book ending.  I hope that Abnett’s retelling of The Korvac Saga continues the fine quality represented by this, Marvel’s only truly cosmic book.  Reward this quality by buying this book and leaving the pseudo-cosmic trash like NINO and GotGINO on the shelf.  That will send Marvel a message that there is a market for good quality cosmic

Review: NINO #31

Happy Day!  This trash book is finally over!  It can now be relegated to the dust bin where it and other bad memories belong.  Hopefully, Brevoort and Alonso will join it there when their Secret Wars event flops.

The art is particularly bad this issue.  I have always hated this Manga-ized version of the Nova uniform, but NINO looks particularly stupid in it this issue.  In some panels, his neck is the size of a pencil.  When his helmet is off, he has Dumbo-sized ears.  I guess that’s the source of his flight powers.

The story is just as dumb as always with NINO improbably beating a much more powerful and experienced fighter after his actions place Earth in danger.  I, as always, was rooting for the villain.  The perfect ending to this story would’ve been NINO’s death.  Sadly, he survives.  And his unfit parents look to be letting him continue to wear the helmet.  Hey Marvel, this isn’t entertainment.  It’s a tragic example of why kids shouldn’t have super-powers and shouldn’t be soldiers/cops – and why unfit parents shouldn’t have kids.  Not to mention an example of why Duggan shouldn’t be allowed to write cosmic.

Rocket Racoon and Beta Ray Bill have cameos in this issue – showing up just in time to keep NINO’s screw-up from laying waste to Earth.  Yet literally thousands of fairly large asteroids are shown left circling Earth – with no indication that NINO actually cleaned any of them up.  Irresponsible?  I guess anyone can be made an Avenger these days.   At least NINO’s upcoming Avenger book will have a short life span.  Maybe after that, Marvel will give up on this failed experiment.

NINO’s gone, and good riddance to him and his fans.  It’s been too long in coming and he won’t be missed.  Leave this one on the shelf.  Nothing to see here.  And the last issue needs to go out selling less than 18K to ice the NINO failure cake and send Marvel a clear message:  No more NINO’s!

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #27 (Bendys)

The cover teases “The End?”  Oh – please let it be so.  The end of Bendis’ run on this book, at least.  He’s done everything he possibly could to run it into the ground.  It deserves to be put out of its misery.

This absolutely terrible storyline is finally brought to its inevitably stupid end.  Thank God.  I don’t think I could’ve handled any more of the sit-com type banter between Star-Lord and Kitty.  It was groan and eyeball-roll time every time they interacted.  This has to be the most stupid comic book marriage of all time.

And of course, Bendys couldn’t resist throwing in a bunch of “Blam!  Murdered You’s” any time he could squeeze one into Rocket’s dialogue box.  He obviously hasn’t given up on that catchphrase and no doubt dreams of the cash to be made having it emblazoned on millions of tee shirts sporting Rocket’s image.

Hey Bendys – did you never come to the simple realization that the comic didn’t have to be an even more ridiculous version of the movie?  Alternatively, the comic could actually be written as the GOOD source material that the movie writers then have to water down to make palatable to the great unwashed masses.  You know – just like what Gunn did to the original well-written DnA source material and is doing again using the good DnA source material for the sequel.  He’s staying away from your stuff because it’s so bad.  Probably no one else will tell you this simple truth out of politeness.  I’m not polite.  But – take it to heart anyway.  Do the right thing and leave this book to a more talented writer.  Cosmic isn’t your thing.  Follow your dream and go write TV sit-coms and rom-coms.

The art this time out is variable – at times impressive and at times jarringly bad.  It doesn’t save this book.  It’s just par for the course.  Bad writing and commensurate art.

Let’s all join hands and pray that Bendis moves on to something else after this Secret Wars atrocity stumbles to its end.  I guess it would be too much to hope for to have Bendis, Loeb, Brevoort, and Alonso all gone after this event.  But we can always dream of a time when they are just bad memories.

Review: Secret Wars: Infinity Gauntlet (In Name Only) #1

IGINO #1

An Opinion-Editorially Oriented Review

First off, don’t believe the hype for this book being shoveled high and deep by Marvel shill websites like CBR and IGN.  This book is really just another showcase for Duggan’s un-originality and an opportunity for Marvel to answer all the media criticism about females and racial minorities being in short supply in their universe with yet another replacement of an established superhero with someone with politically correct demographics.

Duggan freely admits that he blatantly re-packaged teen Spiderman tropes for his excruciatingly bad NINO series which thankfully and mercifully ended this week.  For Infinity Gauntlet in Name Only (hereinafter referred to as IGINO), he simply begins with the tired old “Lone Ranger” cliché that has too often been applied to the Nova concepts, adds a Good Times-like family with all the desired PC demographics as the protagonists of the story, inferiorly re-packages the Annihilation Prologue storyline, and throws all this into a War of the Worlds type setting with a raggedy-looking Thanos skulking around in the background looking for Infinity Stone fragments as the only real tie to the namesake of this storyline – Marvel’s best pre-Annihilation cosmic story, Starlin’s original The Infinity Gauntlet.  Given all that, I’d have to conclude that Duggan has replaced Bendys as the King of Hackery.  He’s obviously poorly versed in Science-Fiction and it shows.  He simply re-packages concepts from popular SF-oriented comic books, TV, and movies – and produces something vastly inferior to the original.

Frankly, I’m tired of all the PC nonsense.  All this howling in the mainstream media is mainly directed toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is primarily coming from critics who don’t buy and read comic books.   If there really is a comic book market of buyers eager to buy books about female and racial minority heroes, it isn’t evident if sales history is used as a measure.  She-Hulk, Spider-Girl, Spiderwoman, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Falcon, etc. have all had multiple re-launched books and have never really been able to stay above cancellation threshold for very long.  Sure – some of them were kept on life-support for a while.  But none of them have had real staying power.  I give credit to Marvel for trying.  But if the buyers aren’t there, they aren’t there.

What annoys me is when Marvel cheats and takes the lazy (and racist and/or sexist in its own way) path out.  Instead of taking the risk and creating new characters with PC demographics from scratch and trying to make them compelling enough to catch on with the general population of comic buyers, they, in a form of reverse racism/sexism, replace beloved white male superheroes who already have a large following with female and/or racial minority characters knowing that the buyers will continue to buy the books they habitually buy for a while – all the while knowing in the back of their minds that the originals will return.  Does anyone really believe that Thor Odinson and Steve Rogers won’t return to their respective roles of Thor and Captain America once the PC characters now filling their shoes wear out their welcome?  Of course not.   Marvel doesn’t want to lose those habitual buyers.  The exception to this rule appears to be Richard Rider’s Nova.  For some reason, Marvel doesn’t care about alienating his fan base, and Marvel Writers and Editors go out of their way to insult and denigrate his fan base.

First we’ve had Loeb’s truly pathetically bad half-Xandarian-half-Hispanic teen idiot, Sam Alexander, as Rich’s permanent replacement.  Now comes Black Female teenage Xandarian, Anwen Bakian, and her family – including a salty old grandpa and a dog.  Could you get more PC than this?  I think not.  And the zombies and the small minority of PC-lovers are standing in line to drink this Guyana Kool-Aid.  Of course, I fully expect to be viciously attacked by the PC-Police with their Ferguson-Missouri-Police tactics merely for expressing these views.

Let’s talk about how clichéd and dumb this IGINO concept and storyline are in the first place.  How many times have you seen this kind of chase and narrow escape scenario?  In just about every monster movie you’ve ever seen, right?  How many times on how many TV shows have you seen a grandpa and son-in-law argument such as presented in this book?  On how many dumb child-oriented TV shows are the teenagers and children portrayed as wiser, smarter, and braver than the adults?  And how stupid is that anyway?  I’ve got no problem with there being dark-skinned Xandarians.  I do have a problem with there being a dog on Xandar.  Why is there a German Shepherd dog on Xandar?  I have no problem with a dark-skinned adult female Nova Corpsman.  I have a problem with the entire family getting Nova powers.  Once again, Marvel is going down the immoral child soldier pathway.  And I have a huge problem with Anwen being the next in line as Rich’s replacement.  I suppose the dog will also get powers – or more likely, since Duggan can’t resist a good cliché, the dog will die a tragic, heroic death since none of the principals except maybe dad or grandpa will get killed.  Why is Thanos skulking around in the background?  He’s not that kind of guy.  He’s a lot more powerful than the bugs and Anwen’s mom.  Why doesn’t he just stride in and take the stones he’s looking for?  Also, why do we need another NINO type book aimed at children?  Wasn’t the original NINO experiment a big enough failure? This book is hardly original or of high quality – unless you have the deficient mentality of a CBR/IGN reviewer or a CBR forum regular or one of the chronic complainers who show up on Facebook to take issue with me.  In that case, you probably think it’s wonderful as you wash it down with the rest of your Pablum.

Weaver’s art is decent for most of the book.  At times – such as the underground scene and some of the chase scenes – it’s muddled and confusing.  But for the most part, it’s well done.  It’s not enough to save this book – but it keeps the book from being a total waste of paper.

So, my advice, particularly if you’re a Rich Rider Nova fan, is to vote with your dollars and boycott this Politically Correct NINO-ette (hereinafter referred to as PC-NINO-ette).  Marvel needs to be slapped down for disrespecting the Rider Nova fans once again, for disrespecting the Annihilation and The Infinity Gauntlet source material, and for producing this PC-NINO-ette disgusting, hackneyed trash.  Making this book a sales failure is a good way to do it.

Marvel May Decide On New Spider-Man Within A Week

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20800:]]

It’s being said the new Spider-Man may be chosen within a week.

THR offers an update on the Spider-Man casting, which offers that contrary to internet rumor, Asa Butterfield has not been cast or offered the role.

The report mentions six actors were flown into Atlanta, where Captain America: Civil War is filming, to test for the role with Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige present as well as Joe and Anthony Russo (directors on Cap 3) and Amy Pascal of Sony.

It’s said Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Rowe and Charlie Plummer were the actors tested.

Apparently, the Atlanta test capped off a worldwide search in which Marvel and Sony execs looked at over 1,500 boys from around the world and narrowed them down to the final six only in the last two weeks or so.

It’s further said an inside source has cautioned there is a slim chance that Marvel won’t like any of their choices and could keep looking.

Of course, another possibility is that the new Spider-Man has already been cast and this is just more smoke and mirrors on the part of Marvel.

Aside from internet rumor, recent reports have made no mention of Dylan O’Brien or Logan Lerman for the role.

The new Spider-Man is said to be first appearing in Captain America: Civil War followed by a new 2017 standalone movie.

It looks as if the rest of the Marvel Comics readers will catch up with the Marvel COSMIC readers as a new teaser has been released stating “All-New All-Different” for Fall 2015.

Because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel Comics cancelled Marvel Cosmic and replaced it with a parody version of itself.

It’s not exactly clear what is going to happen with the rest of Marvel, but a few changes are already known as the Avengers team revealed on FCBD will stick around.

The teaser also reads “8 Months Later…” as the titles will be jumping ahead eight months following Secret Wars.

Marvel & George Romero’s Empire Of The Dead Announced As TV Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20683:]]

With The Walking Dead having two series and Z-Nation on SyFy, you knew it wouldn’t be long before zombie godfather George Romero got his own flesh-eating series.

Variety has announced that Romero’s Empire of the Dead graphic novel is being adapted for TV.

Romero published the comic through Marvel Comics; however, it isn’t a part of the regular Marvel Universe, so don’t expect the Marvel Zombies to show up.

Demarest Films is behind the project, with it noted the production company recently backed Kevin Smith’s Tusk, and announced the news today at the Cannes Festival in France.

The Empire of the Dead TV series will be written by Geroge Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald, and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson.

Romero is, of course, known for the Night of the Living Dead zombie movies.

Marvel Comics published the first Empire of the Dead comic back in January of 2014, described as:

Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted—but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don’t think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there’s another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple!

The ancient predator referred to are blood-suckers, so the series features both vamprires and zombies.

A network has yet to pick up the series.

George Takei Calls Out Marvel; Taylor Swift Does A Better Job

Taylor Swift “Bad Blood”

Marvel is definitely feeling the heat for not having a female superhero movie.

Earlier saw Mark Ruffalo call out Marvel regarding the lack of Black Widow merchandise for his daughters.

To add to that, Marvel and Hasbro changed an Avengers 2 toy that removed Black Widow from the motorcycle scene as well.

Now George Takei is at it.

Takei called out Marvel regarding the new Taylor Swift music video for her latest song “Bad Blood,” which is a sci-fi romp done in the style of Sin City featuring celebrities galore.

“Taylor Swift released her much anticipated video Bad Blood starring girl celebs as action stars,” Takei tweeted. “Come on Marvel, T. Swift is showing you up.”

The tweet was retweeted over 2200 times and favorited almost 2000 times.

Marvel has yet to make a superhero female movie, but plans are underway. While it won’t star Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, it will feature Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, though it’s not due out for another three years. Marvel also recently introduced Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch for some added girl power in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron as well.

It’s unknown why Marvel won’t go with a solo Black Widow movie; Scarlett Johansson has already proven she can be a bigger draw than both Captain America and Thor. Johansson’s Lucy netted more than both of the pair of Assemblers first solo films, and it wasn’t even Marvel related. One would think Black Widow would be an even bigger draw if you add the Marvel fanbase to the Lucy numbers.

Marvel, you know you are in trouble when Taylor Swift is showing you up.

Matthew McConaughey Rumored For Norman Osborn For New Spider-Man

Alright, alright, alright.

A couple of days ago saw Matthew McConaughey reveal he had been in talks with both Marvel and DC, and has even read a few scripts.

Now a new rumor has hit the net stating Matthew McConaughey may be up to play Norman Osborn in the new Spider-Man Sony/Marvel venture, which could mean Green Goblin or even Iron Patriot.

The rumor comes from the Hashtag Show YouTube channel that states McConaughey is being eyed for the role.

While we’ve all been focused on Spider-Man, it’s possible other characters could first appear in Captain America: Civil War as well. Norman Osborn wouldn’t be a bad choice.

Daredevil Costume Concept Art For Netflix

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20634:]]

Check out a piece of Daredevil concept art revealed for the Marvel Netflix series.

Artist Ryan Meinerding is responsible for the following rendition of Charlie Cox’s look in the show.

“Joe Quesada got in touch and asked if I could help out,” Meinerding told Marvel.com. “Our whole team actually did designs, [including] Rodney Fuentebella, Andy Park, Jackson Sze, Josh Nizzi, and Anthony Francisco. I think we all did a round of designs as fast as we could, and they settled on one of mine. Beyond that, we did our normal process of modeling the head and the cowl [in] 3D with Josh Herman, and then I was involved throughout the costume creation process.”

Meinerding went on to explain creating the look isn’t that easy of a task.

“One of the most interesting things about Daredevil, that I hadn’t fully appreciated before I started working on the character, is that I think that head is one of the most difficult heads to design for a live action context,” Meinerding offered. “Because if you have a mask like Captain America’s, it’s difficult in it’s own ways, but you still have the actor’s eyes coming through. So you get performance, you get a sense of who they are, of their expression, of what they’re doing. [As a result] the bottom half of the face matches the top half, in terms of expression. With Daredevil, because half of his face has to be covered and has its own expression and the actor’s face is going to be doing something else, it’s actually a very difficult challenge to come up with something up top that’s not going to bump with something down below.”

“Daredevil” is currently on Netflix with all 13 episodes; Season 2 is being developed and will be released next year.

Marvel Announces New MU Following Secret Wars

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20611:]]

Following deleted tweets by a Marvel writer that stated Marvel is rebooting following Secret Wars, now Marvel has unveiled a teaser for the “NEW MU.”

The aftermath of Secret Wars will find the various Marvel titles jumping ahead 8 months, similar to the recent “Time Runs Out” or DC’s “One Year Later” storylines (as well as NEW MU obviously similar sounding to “New 52”).

Marvel’s Tom Brevoort offered the following (via Newsarama):

“In the same way that events jumped forward in time eight months in Avengers and New Avengers during the lead-up to Secret Wars, so too when we enter the new Marvel Universe eight months will have passed for all of the characters as well. This provides our creators, even apart from Secret Wars, to drop into exciting new situations and status quos on the fly. So look for surprises and mysteries and changes galore as series resume in the NEW MU.

As we’ve been saying, the building blocks of the NEW MU are being established throughout the various Secret Wars titles, with every series contributing something to the NEW MU. Whether that something is a character, a place, an environment, an object, a status quo, or any other thing that you might think of.”

It’s currently unknown what will make up the new line of titles, but Marvel did confim A-ForceWeirdworld, All-New, All Different Avengers and Uncanny Inumans will be a part of the NEW MU, as well as the Maestro, and Mrs. Deadpool & The Howling Commandos.
