WB Pulls The Plug On ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Anime: Hits Digital After 14 Days

Warner Bros. has pulled the plug on Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim anime as the animated film will be released on digital after only being in theaters for fourteen days.

Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim will be available digitally starting Dec. 27. The film was released Dec. 13 and has massively bombed with a $4.5M opening, and in its second weekend dropped over 72% and only brought in $1.27M. The reported budget is $30 million.

The anime also has a 47% Rotten Tomatoes Score and an 83% fan score, which is low for the franchise that sees the Peter Jackson original films in the high nineties. The CinemaScore is also a “B,” again not too favorable.

What happened?

What happened is that Warner Bros. had to release a new Lord of the Rings movie in order to keep the rights. They need to release a new movie at least every ten years or so. Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim was also from a previous executive team at Warner Bros., prior to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The story also seemed to take a questionable approach, similar to those that Hollywood has put out the last few years that haven’t resonated with fans and failed.

Up next from the franchise is that Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis are returning to develop two new live-action films. The working title of the first one is said to be “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Prime Video’s Rings of Power Season 2 also returns in August.
