King Conan Shoot Set For 2027 With Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christopher McQuarrie

The Arnold Schwarzenegger King Conan movie is set to start filming in 2027, directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

The updates comes from TheArnoldFans via producer Fredrik Malmberg, as Arnold celebrated the 44th anniversary of the original 1982 movie.

Schwarzenegger told TheArnoldFans, “Next year, we are going to do King Conan,” adding that the movie is now “a reality.”

He also said he has been pushing for years to get the sequel made the right way, with a strong script and a filmmaker who understands Robert E. Howard, Frank Frazetta, and the spirit of the original movie.

THR adds and confirms Christopher McQuarrie is attached to write and direct the sequel for 20th Century Studios.

McQuarrie has directed the four most recent Mission: Impossible movies, which lines up with how Arnold previously described him as the filmmaker behind Tom Cruise’s last four films.

Arnold Conan Barbarian

Arnold compares King Conan to Unforgiven

Arnold also explained why the timing now makes sense.

He said the movie would not have worked right after the original because the whole point is that Conan has been king for 40 years, is older, is no longer in his prime, and has grown tired and complacent before being forced back into battle.

Schwarzenegger compared the tone to Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, but with “extraordinary battles.”

Schwarzenegger also said he would like John Milius, who directed the original Conan the Barbarian, to come aboard as a producer.

Reports also offer Arnold is back training hard for the role.

Arnold Conan Destroyer

This is the sequel fans wanted, not another Momoa reboot

Arnold last played Conan in the original 1982 movie and 1984’s Conan the Destroyer.

He was not involved in the 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot starring Jason Momoa, which was poorly received and failed to launch a new franchise.

So this follow-up is the real thing fans have been asking for all along: Arnold back as an older Conan, with a story built around his age instead of ignoring it.
