James Gunn 'Completely Rebooting' The DCU; Big Announcement Tuesday

James Gunn is said to be completely rebooting the DCU and it’s also said big announcements are coming Tuesday about the new direction.

It’s already known that James Gunn is going with a new actor to play a younger version of Superman, so apparently, the new co-head of the DCU will also introduce a completely new and younger version of the Justice League, something teased by that use of the New 52 comics logo.

Update: James Gunn’s DC plans have been announced.

What does Dave Bautista say about James Gunn’s DCU reboot?

The news of a complete reboot comes from Dave Bautista who recently spoke with Insider where the actor known for playing Drax in the Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy movies revealed he won’t be playing Bane, a role he previously said he wanted to play.

“I have had conversations with James about that but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that,” Bautista said.

Dave Bautista added he thinks the whole DCU needs to be rebooted and understands why.

“I think for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from scratch, and I think you need to start with younger actors,” he continued. “You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that. And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”

What are the DCU announcements?

Regarding what the announcements could be at the press event, news on Gunn’s Superman movie could be announced, as Gunn has been writing the script for some time; so perhaps we’ll find out the actor and director (likely Gunn?).

Gunn has also teased he is writing a secret TV project where he teased Amanda Waller, with it thought Viola Davis will be starring in the series, so whether Bautista’s comments about a complete reboot remain true remain to be seen.

DC still has Shazam! 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 in the works, so if it’s announced a complete reboot is happening, why would fans bother watching those films?

I’m guessing what is going on is that Gunn is completely rebooting some characters (i.e. Superman) while others may stick around (Viola Davis as Amanda Waller).

Jason Momoa has also teased a dream role, thought to be playing Lobo, so he might be done as Aquaman, which makes sense if Gunn is going with a younger version of the Justice League (Cavill is out, Affleck is done as Batman, so that would mean Gal Gadot is done as Wonder Woman; however, Ezra Miller is only 30 years old and could remain on as The Flash).
