Hugh Jackman is unrecognizable in the first official look at The Death of Robin Hood, an upcoming A24 film that puts a darker, grounded spin on the legendary outlaw.
EW.com unveiled the images, showing Jackman as a scarred, weathered Robin Hood nearing the end of his life.
The film is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) and is set to arrive in theaters in 2026.
Hugh Jackman’s Robin Hood Is Brutal and Grounded
Jackman’s version of Robin Hood is far removed from the romanticized hero seen in past adaptations.
Covered in scars, wrapped in furs, and hardened by years of violence, this Robin Hood is portrayed as a real man reckoning with his past.
Jackman told EW the script examines power and how it’s used, adding that this Robin Hood carries pain, regret, and self-awareness.
He described the story as “beautiful and human,” emphasizing that the character knows he wasn’t the hero folklore made him out to be.
A Darker Take on the Legend
Sarnoski has been clear that this is not a traditional Robin Hood story. While he avoids plot details, the title itself signals a reflective story set near the end of Robin’s life.
According to the director, the film leans into the brutality of the era, with combat that feels closer to a war film than a swashbuckling adventure.
The director noted that Robin Hood was a violent outlaw whose legend was shaped by others, and the film explores how the man himself feels about being mythologized while still alive.
Cast Includes Bill Skarsgård and Jodie Comer
Bill Skarsgård plays a version of Little John, portrayed as someone Robin once mentored. Years later, the two reunite with very different views of the lives they lived.
Jodie Comer also stars in a mysterious role that is confirmed not to be Maid Marian, instead representing a different side of Robin’s life and emotional journey.
The film was shot in Northern Ireland’s rugged landscapes and marks Sarnoski’s first feature shot on 35mm film.
