Gladiator 2 Happening By Ridley Scott

It’s learned Ridley Scott is moving forward on Gladiator 2, which is a sequel to the 2000 movie starring Russell Crowe that earned 11 Oscar nominations and five wins, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe, who starred as Maximus.

Details for the sequel to Gladiator include that it will continue the story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Marcus Aurelius, as well as the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). The first movie saw Maximus save the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and leaving a strong impression on the young Lucius (via Deadline).

It’s said Ridley Scott wants to return to direct, with the script being written by Peter Craig, known for The Town and Hunger Games, as well as 12 Strong and the upcoming Top Gun 2, in addition to the Logan’s Run remake.

Ridley Scott has other projects in the works, so it’s unknown when production will begin. Scott is directing his first ever TV series, Raised By Wolves, for TNT, has the Scarlet Johansson drama about photojournalist Lyndsey Addario in the works, and wants to make a coming of age Merlin movie at Disney, which might be first.

Gladiator made over $460 million worldwide with over $187 million in the U.S., which in today’s dollars would be around $690 million.
