Fantastic Four Tanks Like Thunderbolts, Digital Release Coming Fast

Rumors say The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit digital on September 27, with the Blu-ray and 4K release set for October 28.

That’s just a few weeks away, and the home release comes as the movie limps through its theatrical run.

We can guess the Disney+ premiere might hit on Nov. 19, or earlier, as Thunderbolts was released 117 days after its premiere on Disney+, and Captain America: Brave New World 103 days later.

Update: The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released on digital platforms on September 23. The film will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 14.

Box Office Update

As of Tuesday, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has grossed:

  • Domestic (52.6%): $258,739,851
  • International (47.4%): $233,164,435
  • Worldwide: $491,904,286

The film is tracking a little better than Thunderbolts on the dailies, which finished its run after 33 days with about $7M, so we can expect similar for Fantastic Four, which is currently at the 33-day mark.

Even with that edge, the movie continues to suffer overseas, and adding in a weak foreign performance should put the worldwide box office total just over $500M.

Another MCU Underperformer

With a reported $200M budget — and likely more due to reshoots — Disney is looking at yet another Marvel Studios release that barely breaks even.

Fantastic Four was also supposed to create a lot of hype for Avengers: Doomsday, but it seems just the opposite, as things fizzled.

While digital and Blu-ray sales may help offset losses, it doesn’t change the fact that Kevin Feige’s latest MCU installment has fallen flat at the box office again.
