Dwayne Johnson doesn’t want to take a bite out of Marvel
Dwayne Johnson offering the DC films universe has a Phase 1 will of course bring up comparisons to the MCU which is currently in Phase 4 that ends with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever next month.
However, Johnson has been quick to state they are not trying to take down the MCU.
“And do I think we’re gonna take any kind of bite out of Marvel? The answer is unequivocally, no. Because to me, as we build out the DC universe, ushering in a new era of the DC universe, that to me is not our lead foot, it’s not our goal, to take a bite out of Marvel,” Johnson told the AP.
Johnson continued, “What they’ve done is incredible, what Kevin Feige’s done is incredible. And by the way, I love those guys, you know, [they’re] my friends. And they are largely responsible for the economic drive of our business for almost two decades. So, we don’t want to be Marvel.”
Johnson added, “We want to be DC. And how we do things. So that’s what I want. I don’t want to take a bite of that apple, I want to grab a new apple. [Laughs] And I want to create from there.”
Dwayne Johnson doesn’t want to be Marvel
Dwayne Johnson also told the NY Times that he is embracing the pressure put on him and that they don’t want to be Marvel.
“Yes, and I embrace it,” said Johnson. It’s a unique time in the superhero genre, where there’s the introduction of fresh blood and new characters on both sides of the aisle — at Marvel and certainly at DC. And the launching of Black Adam is converging with a time where they are also bringing in new leadership at Warner Bros. and new leadership on the DC side is soon to be coming in.”
Johnson added, “I feel very confident about the direction of the DC universe. It is going to require real strategy and real leadership. And that requires us not to look at Marvel’s success and say, let’s follow that blueprint. That’s Marvel. I’m very happy for them. We don’t want to be Marvel, in my opinion. We want to be DC and we want to do it our way.”
DC is on the move
Regarding that “new apple,” just yesterday saw the big news about the state of the DC films universe which includes:
- Man of Steel 2 in development with Henry Cavill back as Superman
- James Gunn developing secret DC projects
- The Batman director Matt Reeves developing more villain projects
- The Flash sequel is already written
There has actually been a rumor that Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav thinks the time is now to strike at Marvel as Marvel is on the downhill and suffering, which all the recent Marvel news and content seem to suggest.
Kevin Feige’s approach to Phase 4 hasn’t been all that good as evidenced by the reception to the Disney Plus shows (no new subscribers), and the lukewarm reception to the movies. Just ask Skaar.
