Now We Have An Asian Hulk

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21158:]]

Is Marvel’s Secret Wars really a secret war against white male comic book characters?

The latest to support the theory is that the Hulk looks to be the next in line to get replaced.

Marvel released a teaser image of the new Hulk, which is speculated to be Amadeus Cho, who is of Korean descent.

Greg Pak is writing the The Totally Awesome Hulk with art by Frank Cho.

Marvel Comics has been replacing their white comic book characters as of late with minority characters.

Their new Avengers book features five new characters that have replaced original white characters as well.

Stan Lee recently offered this thoughts on white characters getting replaced in that new characters should just be created.

A while back also saw Michelle Rodriguez rant about minority characters replacing white characters in Hollywood.

Carol Danvers Captain Marvel Gets Agent Carter Creative Team & New Look

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21140:]]

Following the news of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s departure from the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel series, Marvel has announced a new creative team, which will consist of the showrunners behind the Agent Carter TV series.

Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas will be the writers on the new Captain Marvel #1 that launches following Secret Wars, with Kris Anka on as artist.

Fast Company revealed details and the new look of Carol Danvers which includes an altered costume and a short new hair cut.

• The new series begins eight months after the end of Secret Wars.

• The new mission has Captain Marvel as Earth’s first line of defense against extraterrestrial threats.

• S.W.O.R.D. will not be around post-Secret Wars.

• Carol comes upon a ghost ship, with no crew or dead crew, with the first six issues dealing with the fact that it’s not a coincidence that the ship is headed towards Earth and Captain Marvel.

• Carol is really meant to be a soldier and a commander, and also a diplomat; the series is rooted in Earth but also an extension into the galaxy.

Regarding the new costume and hair cut:

“We’ve slightly modified her costume to kind of reflect her new status quo,” says Butters. “There’s been a lot of controversy about Carol Danvers’ haircut. We really wanted to make sure it was consistent and streamlined. Last year I think a lot of people couldn’t get her hairstyle—sometimes it was short, sometimes it was long—so we went in and designed exactly what she would look like. Kris really wanted to go shorter, because he felt it aligned with what her new look is all about.”

“She’s military,” added Fazekas. “She’s not going to have this huge mane of hair. It needs to be practical.”

Marvel Comics Announces Doctor Strange By Aaron & Bachalo

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21107:]]

With a Doctor Strange movie coming up, now it’s the Sorceror Supreme’s turn for a “reinvention.”

Marvel Comics has announced a new post-Secret Wars Doctor Strange series from writer Jason Aaron and artist Chris Bachalo.

EW.com notes the new Doctor Strange series will “not only serve as a reinvention of the classic character but will also explore him in a deeper way than ever before.”

“This is a Doctor Strange who is going to get hurt real bad, real quick. And who is also going to make you feel things,” Marvel editor Nick Lowe explained. “And not just think things, but feel things… hopefully a little bit of both.”

Per the cover below, Doctor Strange is seen using an axe. Regarding Strange’s use of weapons, Jason Aaron offered: “So we’re not turning him into Captain America or Thor where he has one weapon he carries around at all times. But certainly, we don’t want him to just be the guy who stands there and shoots blasts of magic energy out of his hands. We want him to be able to dive into different kinds of fights. So we’ll see him use his power and use a lot of different weapons in very different ways. “

Regarding the tone of the book, Aaron offered the following details: “He’s a Sorcerer Supreme; he kind of walks the path not many other characters in the Marvel Universe walk. And certainly out of all of those people who deal with magic, he’s the guy sitting at the top of the pyramid. So I like that part of it. I like that he has a different beat than most of the other heroes, and he loves that. He loves the weirdness of it. He’s a weird guy. We talk about the fact that his house is maybe the last truly weird place left in New York City and the Marvel Universe. When you go inside, you never know what you’re going to find when you open any door. You certainly want to stay out of the refrigerator [laughs.] I like that it’s kind of a celebration of the strange and the weird, and he loves that. But at the same time, what he’s doing take a toll on him. And you can’t walk this path, you can’t be the Sorcerer Supreme without paying that price. Whether that’s a physical price or a mental one—you know, some day this job is going to kill you, or drive you insane, or worse. I like that balance of he’s having fun, but also this job is taking a toll on him.”

The new Doctor Strange series hits this Fall.

Kelly Sue DeConnick Off Captain Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21084:]]

It’s learned that following Secret Wars, Kelly Sue DeConnick will be off the Captain Marvel Carol Danvers series.

The news shouldn’t come to that much of a surprise as the series has been not selling well for some time.

DeConnnick made the news be known yesterday at the Heroes Con panel.

“So hard to go, but it’s time,” she confirmed on Twitter.

It’s also probably safe to assume with the Captain Marvel movie in the works by Marvel Studios, that Marvel Comics will be attempting to relaunch the series to mirror whatever tone the movie goes for (Marvel Comics attempted something similar with the Guardians of the Galaxy comics).

DeConnick looks to be writing Captain Marvel  & The Carol Corps though at least September.

The Captain Marvel movie has a November2, 2018 release.

Miles Morales To Headline Bendys Spider-Man

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21082:]]

Disney continues their PC take over of Marvel Comics with Miles Morales being the headliner in new Bendys Spider-Man comic that launches in the Fall following Secret Wars.

Apparently, Bendys thinks fans of “color” are not allowed to be Batman or Superman while playing with their friends (seriously, this is what he says), so now they can pretend to be Miles Morales, the Black Puerto Rican Spider-Man from the Ultimate Universe that replaced a murdered Peter Parker, and now finds himself front-and-center following Secret Wars:

“Many kids of color who when they were playing superheroes with their friends, their friends wouldn’t let them be Batman or Superman because they don’t look like those heroes but they could be Spider-Man because anyone could be under that mask. But now it’s true. It’s meant a great deal to a great many people.”

The NY Daily News states that Peter Parker looks to be involved in the new series somehow as it’s stated Parker is a mentor to Morales. Bendys also notes the Morales Spider-Man is everybody’s Spider-Man.

“Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else,” says Bendis of the series which is drawn by artist Sarah Pichelli.

Bendis On Iron Man For Marvel Fall Reboot

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20890:]]

Today at the Special Edition: NYC comic book festival, Marvel announced that come their Fall reboot, Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez will be on Invincible Iron Man.

The above teaser image was released.

It’s also learned that following in footsteps of the Marvel Studios movies, Marvel Comics is re-positioning Iron Man to be most prominent character in the “All-New All Different” comic book line.

Marvel’s Tom Brevoort told Newsarama the following about Iron Man taking over the reins from Spider-Man:

I think Iron Man’s prominence is something pretty much everybody who encounters Marvel in every other medium already knows. While the masked head of Spider-Man has historically been most associated with Marvel as a defacto mascot, in the last ten years in every field outside of publishing Iron Man is Marvel Comics. If you’re talking about the people who see the films, buy the t-shirts or merchandise, watch the television shows, it all comes back to Shellhead. We’re going to make a concerted effort with All-New All-Different Marvel to make Iron Man the forefront of the comic books’ universe as it is elsewhere.

The Iron Man movie was the spine that the Marvel Cinematic Universe grew out of it. Once you look globally, Iron Man the character is Marvel’s Mickey Mouse. I Hate to put it that way, but no disrespect to Mickey. When people think of Marvel and not steeped in our world of comic books, they think of Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man.

Marvel recently announced plans for their Fall reboot/relaunch which will include 55-60 new #1 titles, and released two teaser images.

Ultimate Reed Richards Rumored To Be New Hulk

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20885:]]

Yesterday saw Marvel reveal plans for their Fall reboot with EIC Axel Alonso teasing a new Hulk.

Now the identity of the new Hulk may have become known as Bleeding Cool is reporting the Ultimate Universe Reed Richards will be Marvel’s new Hulk.

Regarding the new Hulk, Alonso yesterday stated to various news outlets:

“The all-new Hulk … this character is certain to cause debate. The same people who went crazy with female Thor will have a field day with this one. Will there be enough room for him and Peter Parker? Read and find out. Wolverine will return to the Marvel Universe (again, this will be something big). Who is Wolverine? You’ll have to read and find out.”

“I’ll go ahead and tell you the Marvel Universe is about to see the arrival of an All-New Hulk—not a Hulk that you’ve seen before. And this development is deeply rooted in story. I am personally excited about it and its ramifications and it’s a fascinating story that I think Bruce Banner fans will definitely want to read. You’ll also see the arrival of a new Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe and you’ll also see—spoiler alert—a Wolverine emerge on the scene. I’m not going to say who, but a Wolverine that is certain to provoke reactions.”

“We’ve put the onus on the creators to come up with big changes in the lives of our characters, whether it’s Spider-Man or Ms. Marvel or Daredevil or the Hulk. You’re going to be looking at, in certain cases, new characters inhabiting those roles, and new characters dealing with profound changes in the relationships with others around them and where they live.”

“…Incredible Hulk like no fan has ever seen before. That’s certain to be a topic of conversation. All the same people who yelled about female Thor are going to do the same thing about this Hulk.”

• Doctor Spectrum from Hickman’s Avengers

• Citizen V of the Thunderbolts

• It looks like the Thing is joining the Guardians of the Galaxy as the Thing has the same costume as Rocket Raccoon; Star-Lord is also present

• The guy in the green hoodie is Karnak, an Inhuman.

• Hyperion.

• Inferno of the Inhumans.

• Iron Man.

• Daredevil in what looks like a nod to the Netflix costume.

• X-23 as Wolverine.

• Doctor Strange carrying an axe, for some reason.

The Marvel Comics relaunch/reboot hits this Fall with 55-60 all new #1 titles.

Doctor Strange Comic-Con Action Figure Set Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20876:]]

With Marvel Studios launching a Doctor Strange movie next year comes word of a Hasbro exclusive Comic-Con Doctor Strange Marvel Legends action figure set, which is actually based on the comics.

The set will be available at this Summer’s Comic-Con for $99.99 and available through the online Hasbro Shop for a limited time.

The set includes 6-inch figures for Doctor Strange in his blue astral form, Brother Voodoo, the mutant sorceress Magik, the Asgardian goddess of death Hela, Strange’s arch nemesis – and ruler of the Dark Dimension – the dreaded Dormammu, and a wearable Eye of Agamotto (via USA Today).

Last year’s Comic-Con saw Marvel Cosmic figures sold for Thanos Imperative and The Infinity Gauntlet, which now cost a pretty penny, so if you attend Comic-Con this year, the Doctor Strange set might be worth picking up if just for resale value alone.

Comic-Con runs July 8-12th.

Marvel Rebooting In Fall With New #1’s & Characters

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20864:]]

Following on the heels of DC’s own reboot attempt with the New 52 back in the Fall of 2011, now it’s official that Marvel is rebooting as well with the “All-New, All-Different Marvel” approach.

It’s reported Marvel will be rebooting with 55-60 new #1 issues this Fall, which will include a new Wolverine, new Spider-Man and a new Hulk, with titles written by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Mark Waid, Dan Slott, Charles Soule, G. Willow Wilson, Jeff Lemire, CM Punk and Nicole Perlman.

The new event follows Secret Wars and takes place eight months later.

Marvel EIC Axel Alonso and David Gabriel, SVP of Sales and Marketing, offered the following to various news outlets:

Update: Marvel has released a second teaser image.

Axel Alonso:

“This is the Marvel Universe. This fall, we will be inviting readers into a universe comprised of bold new landscapes populated with characters and teams both familiar and brand-new.”

“She [Kamala Khan] is Peter Parker for the 21st century. Peter Parker can be a 16-year-old Pakistani girl from Jersey City. If her story is universal, then people are going to come and read it. If it feels true, if it resonates, people are going to come.”

You’re going to be looking at, in certain cases, new characters inhabiting those roles, and new characters dealing with profound changes in the relationships with others around them and where they live.

“We’ve challenged everybody to come up with the right ‘Oh (expletive)’ reveal for their character to shake it up and make it interesting.”

“…Incredible Hulk like no fan has ever seen before. That’s certain to be a topic of conversation. All the same people who yelled about female Thor are going to do the same thing about this Hulk.”

“…they’re going to read the story and go, ‘Oh God, they’re on to something!’ “

“There’s no red sky, there’s no icecaps. But there will be new places on the map, there will be new characters that were just too cool to not bring back from ‘Secret Wars.’ There are new teams that are necessary to deal with new threats.”

“I think that the comics industry — certainly, we are — slowly working into a season model that’s not too unlike what we see in our favorite cable TV shows: a seasonal model that offers accessible entry points for new readers and is respectful of long-term fans. We did Marvel NOW! and All-New Marvel NOW!, which were both two very successful campaigns. And this is the latest campaign.”

David Gabriel:

“This is going to be an absolute game changer for Marvel. Similar to the most successful comics industry program of this century—Marvel NOW!, All-New All-Different Marvel is going to be presenting fans new #1’s for every title coming out during this event. This is a brand new beginning that honors our past 76 years, yet takes a bold step with daring, and accessible, entry points.”

“The real beauty of that is if you’re one of these fans who’ve been around for many years, it’s a great, exciting mystery. And if you’re these new fans who maybe only jumped in this year when you saw the Avengers movie, you’ll be able to pick up any of these comics and you will not need to know 50 years of backstory of anybody.”

Blade Featured With Howard The Duck & A Racist Watermelon Joke in Battleworld #2

Secret Wars: Battleworld #2 was released this week from Marvel Comics which features none other than Blade and Howard The Duck.

As we all know, Marvel has been going the PC route by “diversifying” their characters.

It seems Marvel ED may have let this one slip by as we are guessing the PC Police wouldn’t be too thrilled with the context.

However, we guess it’s okay because it’s written by Shaft writer David Walker.

Anybody else… well, that’s probably a different story.

DC’s Omega Men Promises To Be Better Cosmic Than Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20824:]]

While Marvel Comics goes the PC and parody route with their cosmic titles, DC Comics writer Tom King is promising that The Omega Men will “tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The Omega Men #1 launches tomorrow as part of the new “DC You” line-up that follows the Convergence event.

Tom King spoke with USA Today offering some space-age details about The Omega Men, which previously hinted at the death of White Lantern Kyle Rayner in the special 8-page sneak peek preview (see below).

“A lot of companies have told the greatest cosmic stories over the past 20 years in comics using concepts invented for DC,” King said. “With this story, DC’s going to take back its stars. We’re going to tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The following plot is also revealed:

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Joe Staton‘s run on Green Lantern in 1981, the Omega Men are a group of intergalactic renegades from the Vega star system. In their new take on the team, King and Indonesian artist Barnaby Bagenda infuse the book with a rebels-vs.-empire concept a la Star Wars but grounded in an impactful reality inspired by King’s work in the CIA as a counterterrorism operations officer.

The Citadel rules the Vega system with an iron hand — King figures it’s akin to somewhere between the height of the British Empire and occupied Europe circa 1943. The Green Lantern Corps are cosmic cops protecting the universe but the Citadel is off limits to them thanks to some shady dealings.

In an act of revolution, the Omega Men use a video to broadcast the death of Rayner — although the screen turns to fuzz during the killing blow, and we never actually see the White Lantern‘s body — and that causes all sorts of problems. The Lanterns are incensed that they can’t come in and investigate, and the power players of the Citadel take it upon themselves to apprehend the outlaws.

Regarding the death of Kyle Rayner:

The Omega Men is definitely an ambitious project for King on the whole. He remembers having three editors on the phone when writing Rayner’s death: “It was like, ‘Oh, you can use Kyle Rayner,’ and I’m like, ‘Great, I’ll kill him!’ ”

King also says the story is on par with Star Wars, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, and that: “I’m taking that opportunity to write an incredible, epic sci-fi adventure that kicks you in the gut and keeps going.”

Description:

The Omega Men are back in an all-new series! They’ve murdered White Lantern Kyle Rayner and now, the universe wants them to pay! Who are these intergalactic criminals – and is there more to their actions than meets the eye?

More Proof Marvel Is Blocking Use Of X-Men & Fantastic Four

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20818:]]

Last night saw it become known that the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters had been removed from the Marvel Universe characters poster.

Now further proof that Marvel is intentionally blocking the use of the X-Men and Fanastic Four comes from the official Facebook pages for the Marvel Mighty Heroes mobile game and Trends International, the official publisher of the Marvel poster.

A user on reddit took the screenshots of the following responses.

You will also obviously notice no X-Men and FF characters on the above Marvel Mighty Heroes image.

Disney seems pretty mum on the subject. I can’t recall any big comic book “news” websites or entertainment “news” websites asking Disney about it other than back in November with Disney’s Alan Fine and Fox’s Jim Gianopulos stating they have no idea.
