Review: DC Comics Rebirth #1

WARNING: SPOILERS DEAD AHEAD!

(If you have not read Justice League #50, do so BEFORE you read this review…you won’t regret it!)

Superman is dying, Darkseid is a baby, Wonder Woman has a twin brother, there are THREE Jokers, Sector 2814 gets ANOTHER Green Lantern and Lex Luthor is the new Man of Steel! You may think DC is really pushing the envelope with Rebirth after hearing all of that, then you realize, you just read Justice League #50 and haven’t even started Rebirth yet!

Geoff Johns has become the spokesperson for DC’s new Rebirth project, and whether you believe this isn’t a “reboot” or not, I have to say that he has truly convinced me that this story is well beyond the standard “reboot” fundamentals. From page one you are immersed in a tale that weaves in and out of current DC stories and, instead of denying that they ever existed, enhances them to a point that they form one grand story that surpasses them all.

Our narrator, the original Wally West, pulls us along as he tries to reconnect with those who may remember him, since he has been trapped in the Speed Force since the Flashpoint storyline. He takes us through various points of the current DCU, “eavesdropping” upon heroes, and we see that the universe we know is already in flux, eliminating some characters while setting others on center stage. Johns gives us a huge story, eighty pages worth, that could have quickly become a convoluted mess of overlapping arcs that eventually lead to nowhere. Instead, he gives the readers just enough to pacify the curious and ensnare the enthralled, leaving both clamoring for what comes next. He bounces the tale from point to point, never losing sight of the eventual shocking payoff and never cheapening the way to get there. Johns, through Wally, asks questions that DC fans have asked since the “New 52″started and in a way, though veiled, we are given some answers that are not glazed over and eventually, promise to be fleshed out thoroughly.

To give away all of Johns surprises, would only do a disservice to the book and the reader. It is so rich in both detail and surprise that it can only be enjoyed properly by reading it yourself. You will be so shocked and enamored by the dynamic tale Johns lays out before you that, you can’t help but resent the days until all the Rebirth books are released!

On the “Rebirth” promotional tour, Geoff Johns would always read this quote, “I love this world. But there’s something missing.” Well, Mr. Johns, DC may have been missing something, but I think you just found it again!

Chris Evans Thinks What Marvel Comics Did To Captain America Is Dumb, Too

In Marvel Comics desperate attempt to sell copies amid DC Comics releasing their Rebirth issue, they changed up Captain America’s story so he is and always has been a member of Hydra.

Marvel Comics even released the spoiler pic officially.

Well, news has reached Chris Evans, the Captain America from the Marvel movies, who tweeted out his thoughts.

Yeah, it’s pretty dumb.

The good news is Kevin Feige booted Marvel Comics from having anything more to do with the movies.

And a fan on Twitter sums things up rather nicely as well:

Watch: Geoff Johns Talks DC Comics Rebirth

Spoilers follow.

DC Comics and Geoff John’s big issue of Rebirth hits today!

My LCS quickly sold out of at least 250 copies leaving some readers to travel miles and miles in an attempt to find a copy.

You can always read the issue digitally, which is well worth the price of $2.99 for 80 pages of content.

I thought the issue was really great, and contrary to a few comic book sites’ spoiler/speculation articles, the end isn’t exactly clear: Did Dr. Manhattan create the entire DC Universe? I didn’t think so. He may have been responsible for the New 52, in that he got involved at an opportune time (Flashpoint Paradox), but exactly what are his motivations remains to be seen. What’s coming ahead should be pretty good (and all the DC issue are now $2.99!).

Check out video below featuring Geoff Johns talking about the Rebirth issue. Johns makes a great point that the issue isn’t about deconstructing comics (which we’ve been through at least 10 years or more of), but just the opposite.

Geoff Johns Offers Personal Money Back Guarantee For Rebirth

The big DC Comics Rebirth issue hits this week, which is a whopping 80 pages for $2.99.

Spoilers, of course, have already hit the net via leaked images and official press.

Now the writer on Rebirth, Geoff Johns, is putting his money where his mouth is by offering a personal money back guarantee on the book.

“It’s $2.99 for 80 pages. It’s not a lot,” Johns said, reports Newsarama. “If anyone wants to check out comics, wants to check out DC Universe Rebirth #1 and doesn’t like it, they can mail [the comic book] to Warner Bros., to me, and I will send them a check, I literally will, for both postage and for the book. I will buy all these books back because I believe in this issue a lot. I think it’ll do very well. I hope it does well. But I seriously will, I’ll buy back this book.”

Rebirth will become available digitally and in local comic shops tomorrow.

It all begins here. Do not skip to the last page. Do not let a friend or message board ruin this comic for you. The future (and past) of the DC Universe starts here. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

THEY SAID IT: “Rebirth is about focusing in on the core of the character and their respective universe,” says writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. “It brings back what has been lost: the legacy of the characters, the love and the hope of the DCU!”

DC Comics Gets New Logo

DC Comics has announced the release of a new logo (pictured above), which follows the recent redesign of the “folding” logo with the launch of the New 52.

Details below.

New Logo Design Celebrates DC Brand’s Past, Present and Future

Logo to Debut on May 25 Release of ‘DC Universe: Rebirth Special #1’ by Geoff Johns

DC Entertainment announced a new identity and logo for its iconic DC brand. The new DC logo is a mark that leverages over 80 years of heritage with an eye toward the future.

“While comics continue to be the heart and soul of DC, the brand has evolved to now stand for powerful storytelling across so many different forms of media. DC is home to the greatest Super Heroes and Super-Villains, and the new logo has the character and strength to stand proudly alongside DC’s iconic symbols,” stated Amit Desai, DC Entertainment Senior Vice President of Marketing and Global Franchise Management.

“The launch of the new logo is the perfect tribute to DC’s legacy, exciting future and most importantly, our fans.”

The new logo will debut on the cover of the highly-anticipated DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH SPECIAL #1 comic book written by Geoff Johns releasing May 25 and available in comic book shops and digitally. REBIRTH represents the next chapter in the ongoing saga of the DC Universe, mixing traditional values and a modern aesthetic.

“I’m very proud that REBIRTH will be the first comic book published with the new DC logo.” stated Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer. “To me, REBIRTH and the new DC logo are built on what’s come before while looking to what will come tomorrow. I can’t wait for people to see it on the cover.”

The new DC branding will be introduced immediately on various digital platforms, including DC websites, social media channels, DC All Access webseries, and DC All Access app and will continue to rollout worldwide across all DC content and products. One of the many benefits of the new logo design is its versatility to showcase DC’s iconic and timeless characters and stories across all media. Look for the new logo to come to life at key events in the coming months.

The new identity and logo were developed in partnership with Pentagram, the world’s largest independent design consultancy.

BLUEFIN ANNOUNCES FORTHCOMING RELEASE OF NEW SPIDER-MAN SAMURAI MEISHO MANGA REALIZATION FIGURE

Distinctive Collectible Figure Incorporates Japanese Samurai Aesthetic For New Release Of Legendary Superhero Web Crawler

Bluefin, the leading North American distributor of toys, collectibles, and hobby merchandise from Japan, proudly announces the newest addition to the hit Meisho Realization figure series from Tamashii Nations as the company reimagines famous superheroes starting with the release of the Samurai Spider-Man later this year.

Scheduled to debut to retailers in late-Summer/Fall, the highly detailed, 7-inch figure pays homage to the Samurai aesthetic and artfully takes Spidey back to feudal-era Japan, casting him in distinctive, web-like black and crimson warrior armor. The figure is exquisitely constructed with hybrid materials and features up to 15 points of articulation to create endless posing possibilities. Meisho Manga Realization Spider-Man will carry an MSRP of $91.99 from authorized Bluefin retailers nationwide and also from a variety of leading online outlets. Preorders are available now.

Meisho Manga Realization Samurai Spiderman
Height: Approx. 7 inches; MSRP: $91.99

Leave it to top sculptor and designer Takayuki Takeya to take Spider-Man back to Feudal Japan in full, web-like Samurai warrior armor. True to the feudal spirit, Samurai Spider-Man’s ninja kaginawa-style grappling web hook is crafted as chain-like firing mechanism. Like the preceding Meisho Movie Realization products before it, Samurai Spider-Man is crafted with semi-soft materials that allow for superior articulations and dynamic posing. Set includes interchangeable hands (x3), Japanese katana set, and kaginawa web hook set (left and right wrist parts).

Collectors also can enjoy several notable figures from the Tamashii Nations Meisho Movie Realization Star Wars product line – available now from Bluefin – that include the “Ronin” Boba Fett, “Ashigaru” Stormtrooper, and the Samurai General “Taisho” Darth Vader and Samurai General “Daisho” Darth Vader. The wing seats amp up the pandemonium since you will experience all of this chaos with no track above or below – just the sky, ground and adjacent Great Lake churning around you!

THE JOKER Facts

Marvel Teases The Return Of A Hero; Quasar? Genis-Vell?

Marvel sent out a “Hero Teaser” image which included the text “A Long Awaited Return…”

We see the image also reads: “I knew this was my chance to be a hero.”

The image looks a lot like Quasar’s star chest symbol, and we also see the “A” in “Standoff Assault On Pleasant Hill” is the symbol of the Avengers.

Quasar was a member of the Avengers.

However, there is another chance it’s for Genis-Vell, but his star symbol is eight-pointed.

“Standoff” also has to do with the Thunderbolts, of which Genis-Vell/Photon was a member. It’s possible Marvel may have simply mixed up the symbols (lol) or tried to act coy.

I’m also not sure if the teaser text fits with Quasar, unless it means his return to the Avengers.

Anyway, it looks like we’ll find out who it is next week with the release of Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega #1. Here’s the solicit description. Maybe Cap called his old buddy Wendell for some help?

S.H.I.E.L.D.’s clandestine secret prison Pleasant Hill lies in ruins. The villainous Baron Zemo and the super villain inmates of Pleasant Hill stand upon the verge of victory. Should S.H.I.E.L.D.’s reality-warping technology KOBIK fall into their hands, the Marvel Universe will bend to their will.

All that stands between them and total annihilation are a small band of Avengers. But who is that leading them? None other than the restored Steve Rogers! With the original Captain America at the helm, they just may stand a chance. And seeds sown here will set the stage for major things to come in the Marvel Universe.

The return of Steve Rogers, the formation of the all-new Thunderbolts and more! The can’t-miss ending to Avengers: Standoff

Richard Rider Nova Selling Over 200 Percent Better Than NINO

Marvel Comics seems to be less in the money-making business than it is in the PC BS business these days.

Updating my previous article from a couple of weeks ago, the numbers for the relauch of NINO (Nova In Name Only) are in, and they’re even further down the gutter than last time.

Following February’s disastrous drop of over 5000, March sees another drop of 1300 to 16,886 units for NINO #5.

Looking back at the more popular and fan-favorite Abnett and Lanning Nova from 2007, Richard Rider sold a whopping 39,540 copies (234% better) with its own fifth issue — and that’s when Marvel could give a hoot about Marvel Cosmic.

Just imagine if Richard Rider had a smidgen of the promotion that Marvel Comics gave NINO, it’s possible Richard Rider Nova could be a consistent top seller.

However, guys like Joe Quesada, Axel Alonso, Dan Buckley, Tom Brevoort, Jeph Loeb, Brian Bendis and Stephen Wacker made sure that didn’t happen. It’s obviously a good thing they’re not involved with the movies.

We still don’t know why Richard Rider got the axe, or Abnett and Lanning for that matter.

You an offer your thoughts on the subject in our Marvel Cosmic forums.

Dark Horse Announces Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens

New “Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens” Unleashes Summer 2016

Dark Horse, IDW, and 2000 AD team up for galactic mayhem!

Announced today at Emerald City Comicon, three of the universe’s most feared figures cross paths this summer in the ultimate science-fiction crossover: Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens!

Written by New York Times best-selling and Eisner Award–winning author John Layman (Chew, Mars Attacks: Occupation) with stunning interior artwork by Chris Mooneyham (Five Ghosts, Predator: Fire and Stone) and iconic covers by Eisner Award winner Glenn Fabry, this series will be the wild ride of the summer for readers everywhere!

Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens is just the sort of concept that would have Teenage John Layman wetting his pants with excitement…just at the possibility of reading it. Here, many, many years later, Old Man Layman is writing it, and it’s still every bit as thrilling,” remarked writer John Layman.

The crossover pits the legendary lawman Judge Dredd against the universe’s supreme hunters, the Predators, as they both try to survive an onslaught by the galaxy’s ultimate killing machines, the Aliens!

Judge Dredd and Judge Anderson have tracked a criminal cult across the Cursed Earth and into the Alabama morass, where a mad genetic scientist with destructive designs has acquired the best genes that evolution has to offer—a xenomorph skull!

A Predator, attracted to the warm climate and superior prey, has declared hunting season as he calls for backup. All paths will cross in a mind-blowing sci-fi showdown with the fate of the Earth at stake!

“This really is a dream-come-true project for me. I got to work on Aliens once before—a super cool experience, and one that was always on my creative bucket list. Dredd’s been on the bucket list as well, and you throw Predator into the mix, and it’s a trifecta of awesome. I’m loving every minute of this project so far,” added Layman.

Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens #1 (of 4) is in stores July 27, 2016. Preorder your copy today at your local favorite comic shop.

IDW Announces Second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing Series

IDW TO PUBLISH SECOND TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ONGOING SERIES

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe To Launch In August

IDW Publishing will launch a second ongoing comic series based on Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. IDW has been home to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics since 2011 and the high demand for this iconic brand has now paved the way for a sister series entitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe this August.

The creative team for the first arc will include writer Paul Allor (Tet, G.I. Joe) joined by artist Damian Couceiro (Sons of Anarchy) on a story centered around a dangerous new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles foe — the U.S. government! A back-up story will run alongside it from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman and comics legend Bill Sienkiewicz. Freddie E Williams II, fresh off the bestselling Batman/TMNT crossover mini-series with DC Comics, will supply regular cover art, with guest artists providing sought-after variants.

This new spin-off sets itself apart from the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series by spotlighting characters and storylines that are pivotal to the vast IDW TMNT universe, while also showcasing fan-favorite creators alongside emerging talent.

“The story of IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is now too large to confine to just one ongoing series!” says TMNT editor Bobby Curnow. “With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe, we’ll be able to fully explore all of the exciting characters and plots that the world of the Turtles has to offer. This series will also be the perfect venue for some of the best creators in the industry to tell Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories in their own unique voice.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe will explore tales along the entire continuity of the current ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which recently hit 56 issues and counting. This will mark the first time two ongoing Turtles comics will run in tandem since IDW got involved with the property.

Look out for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe this August at your local comic shop.
