While there have been rumors of a reconciliation with Disney and Marvel, MCU fans can say goodbye to Spider-Man as the Wall Crawler is still back at Sony.
An update comes from Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra who offers “for the moment the door is closed” regarding Spider-Man back at Marvel.
A couple of weeks ago, just prior to Disney’s D23 Expo, saw talks between Sony and Disney fall part over keeping Spider-Man at Marvel, which also means Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige won’t be involved with the movies and that Spidey won’t be appearing in any more Avengers flicks.
While attending Variety‘s Entertainment & Technology summit, Vinciquerra doubled down on Sony’s official statement, again noting that Kevin Feige is “stretched incredibly thin” and that Feige “didn’t do all the work.”
“We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work,” the Sony chief said.
Vinciquerra continued with the mention that Spider-Man will do just fine as part of its own universe and doesn’t need the MCU to be successful.
“Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well,” Vinciquerra said. “I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”
Update: It is claimed the deal is not dead and that Sony is lying.
Spider-Man back at Sony with its SpiderVerse
The Sony SpiderVerse plans currently feature the Venom sequel starring Tom Hardy with Woody Harrelson as Carnage, and the Jared Leto Morbius movie. The article also points out Sony is developing five or six TV series set in the Spider-Man world as well, which are being developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Sequels and spinoffs for the popular Into the Spider-Verse animated movie are also in the works.
Marvel Studios producer and Iron Man director Jon Favreau was also on hand at the event and said he hopes the situation between Sony and Disney will eventually be resolved.
“I’ve been talking to everybody about it…I’m cautiously optimistic,” Favreau said. “I think it’s a long way away, and I think the collaboration has been really strong up to this point so I’m hopeful that there’s away for us all to play together going forward.”
Regarding if Spider-Man had stayed in the MCU, rumors offer Marvel would have done more trilogies and connected Spidey to the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and more Avengers films.
Tom Holland will remain on as Spidey for the Sony movies, with the third movie already in development.
