A big rumor hits the net that Karl Urban will be returning as the titular character in a Dredd series that is said to be in early development at Amazon Prime Video from the production team behind The Boys.
Karl Urban starred in Dredd way back in 2012 (available to watch on Max), which has become a huge cult classic and favorite among fans. There was talk of Urban doing a Dredd: Mega City One TV series at one time, which never came to fruition.
Back in 2022, there was actually a rumor that a sequel to the 2012 movie was in development, which would lead to a shared Dredd universe, but nothing became of it.
At the time I actually recommended that Amazon would be a good fit for Dredd. Now that might be the case.

What’s the Latest on the Dredd Series Rumor?
Source of the new rumor
The rumor comes from the Tachyon Pulse YouTube channel out of the UK.
The YouTuber has been leaking possible info about Doctor Who getting canceled, Star Trek and Trump, and recently Stargate getting a revival at Amazon.

Why Amazon Wants Karl Urban
Regarding Dredd, the YouTuber claims that Amazon wants to develop a Dredd series and they want Karl Urban to star in the show:
I’m hearing rumors that Amazon and Karl Urban are very, very interested.
The YouTuber claims that since The Boys is ending with its next season, they want the same production team to develop Dredd starring Urban, who they feel is the big reason why The Boys has been so successful:
Now Amazon are looking at it because The Boys is coming to an end — Season 5 will be the last one — and Karl Urban’s name has gone through the roof over at Amazon. They like him very much. They really do put down his character in The Boys as one of the main reasons why that show succeeded.

Tone, Style, and Source Material
The YouTuber claims that talks have already started and that since Urban is such a huge fan, the Dredd series at Amazon will be similar to the movie in regards to the seriousness (helmet remains on) and source material:
And I’m hearing that conversations have already started about reigniting some sort of Judge Dredd project starring Karl Urban — one that will again be very true to the comic books, but will go a lot further than they were able to with the Dredd movie, which was limited by budget.

The Boys Team to Lead Production
The YouTuber continues:
I’m hearing, actually, that the production team behind The Boys are the ones potentially set to handle it.

Project Status and Urban’s Role
It’s further claimed they are already looking for a writer, and possibly that it sounds like Karl Urban will be on board as a producer (my guess), or at the very least, be closely involved to make sure things stay on track:
Karl Urban would be given virtually free rein to do what he wants with this, under the umbrella of The Boys production team. I’m hearing this has gone as far as conversations and potentially even looking at getting a writer to put together a script. I don’t think it’s gone any further than that — we’re talking very, very early days here.

When an Announcement Could Happen
The YouTuber adds that he thinks the big announcement will come following The Boys Season 5, which is anticipated to premiere in 2026:
Let’s see what happens. I don’t think this is the sort of thing that’ll be announced until after The Boys Season 5 airs and wraps. But from what I’m being told, they’re moving in that direction.

What’s next for Karl Urban?
A quick check of Urban’s IMDb page reveals the actor’s schedule is wide open. Karl Urban recently completed filming Mortal Kombat 2, where he stars as Johnny Cage.
He’s also slated to return as Butcher this year in Season 2 of The Boys‘ spinoff, Gen V.
IMDb also lists the actor as being involved with a new Star Trek film, but a new Star Trek movie featuring the Abrams characters doesn’t look to be happening amid the recent takeover of Paramount by Skydance.
