‘Single White Female’ Remake Drops ‘White’ In New Title

‘Single White Female’ Remake Drops ‘White’ In New Title

The Single White Female remake is moving forward, but the new version is already making one big change: the title.

The remake is now titled Single Female, dropping “White” from the name of the 1992 psychological thriller. Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are set to star, with Bodies Bodies Bodies writer Sarah DeLappe writing the script.

The project is set up at Sony’s 3000 Pictures, with Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva producing.

Single White Female Gets A New Title

The original Single White Female starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh and became one of the better-known erotic thrillers of the early 1990s.

The story followed a woman who takes in a new roommate after a breakup, only for the situation to spiral into obsession, jealousy, and violence.

The new version appears to be keeping the basic remake setup, but the title has now been shortened to Single Female. It is not exactly subtle, and it will probably be the first thing most people notice about the project.

Jenna Ortega And Taylor Russell Star

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are attached to lead the remake, giving Sony two younger stars with strong genre credentials.

Ortega has become one of Hollywood’s go-to names for horror and darker material thanks to Wednesday, Scream, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and Death of a Unicorn.

Russell is also no stranger to darker material, having starred in Bones and All, while also appearing in Escape Room and its sequel.

On paper, the pairing makes sense for a modern update of Single White Female. The bigger question is whether the remake can capture the same uneasy, dangerous edge that made the original stick around in pop culture.

Can The Remake Work Without The Original Hook?

The title change is going to get attention, but it also creates a challenge.

Single White Female was not just a title. It was part of the movie’s identity, tied to the classified-ad language of the era and the unsettling premise of a roommate slowly taking over another woman’s life.

Single Female is cleaner and broader, but it also loses some of the sharpness that made the original title instantly recognizable.

Still, Ortega and Russell give the remake a strong hook, and DeLappe’s involvement suggests Sony is aiming for something more modern than a straight copy of the 1992 thriller.

No director or release date has been announced yet.
