Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Says Wonder Man Is Unlike Any Other Marvel Show

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is teasing what fans can expect from Marvel’s upcoming Wonder Man series, and according to the actor, it’s unlike anything the studio has done before. Speaking with Empire, Abdul-Mateen described the show as “fresh, tongue-in-cheek, and self-aware,” while still grounded in strong character storytelling.

The series follows Simon Williams, an actor cast in a remake of a Wonder Man movie who also happens to have powers of his own. The premise sets up a meta exploration of Hollywood, fame, and the superhero genre itself — something Marvel has only briefly touched on before with She-Hulk.

A Different Kind of Marvel Show

Abdul-Mateen says Wonder Man “feels much different than really any other Marvel show, or any other films.” It’s being developed under the Marvel Spotlight label, which allows creators to tell more standalone, character-driven stories.

While the series plays with the idea of superhero fatigue and audience expectations, Abdul-Mateen clarified that those themes are secondary. “There’ll be commentary about superhero fatigue and things like that, but to me, it’s just dressing,” he said. “That’s not really the aim of the show. The focus of the show is about an actor’s journey. It’s about a journey of friendship.”

Familiar Faces and New Energy

Joining Abdul-Mateen is Sir Ben Kingsley, reprising his MCU role as Trevor Slattery. Their on-screen dynamic will reportedly anchor the emotional core of the series while still delivering plenty of laughs and industry satire.

The story’s tone mixes fourth-wall energy without directly breaking it — keeping the humor sharp and the narrative sincere. Abdul-Mateen says audiences can expect Wonder Man to poke fun at the superhero machine while still delivering the kind of spectacle Marvel fans expect.

Wonder Man premieres January 27, 2026, on Disney+ at 6PM PT, consisting of eight 30-minute episodes. The series is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and promises to be one of Marvel’s most original and self-reflective entries to date.
