Deadwyler, known for The Piano Lesson, will star as one of two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents.

The pair form an unlikely bond after being assigned to a long-shuttered division investigating unexplained phenomena.

Coogler is writing and directing the pilot himself. The casting is being handled by Sinners casting director Francine Maisler.

New Showrunner Boards the X-Files Reboot

Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) has come aboard as showrunner and executive producer.

Executive producers include original X-Files creator Chris Carter, along with Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler under the Proximity Media banner. Simone Harris serves as co-executive producer.

The pilot order caps a three-year development process for the reboot, which falls under Coogler’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney.

Diverse cast

Carter first revealed in 2023 that Coogler planned to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast.

Coogler later confirmed the project and teased the tone.

“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it,” he said. “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f-cking scary.”

He added that the goal is to satisfy longtime fans while attracting new viewers.

Coogler also confirmed that he has spoken with original star Gillian Anderson about the reboot, though no casting involving legacy characters has been confirmed.
