Pixar brought Toy Story 5 to the Annecy Animation Film Festival with new footage, returning cast confirmations, and a look back at the franchise’s 30-year legacy.
Plot and Returning Cast
Pixar’s Pete Docter confirmed that Toy Story 5 will center around an eight-year-old Bonnie, who receives a toy tablet, something the rest of the toys are not thrilled about. Described as a “Toys Meet Tech” story, the movie sees Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang face off against the newest threat to playtime: a smart device.
The main cast is back with Tom Hanks returning as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie.
Pixar also teased new characters, including Conan O’Brien’s recently announced Smarty Pants.
Clip shows off Toy Story 5 opening
A two-minute clip was shown exclusively to the Annecy crowd revealing the opening of Toy Story 5 shown featuring a shipment of Buzz Lightyear toys crash-landing on a deserted island. The Buzz units band together to build a raft and attempt to return to Star Command.
Pixar Celebrates 30 Years of Toy Story
Docter also celebrated Toy Story’s 30th anniversary by sharing rare behind-the-scenes footage from the original 1995 film. As the supervising animator on the first Toy Story, he offered a look back at how the franchise helped launch Pixar into stardom and revolutionized animated filmmaking.
Since its debut, the Toy Story franchise has racked up 18 Academy Award nominations, 3 Oscar wins, and a Special Achievement Award. Both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 won Best Animated Feature, and “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 won Best Original Song.
