Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition Reveals Jena Malone Role

Jena Malone’s role in Batman Vs. Superman is finally made known as the Ultimate Editon has been released online early and the credits have hit the net.

Contrary to speculation, Jena Malone is not playing Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, aka Oracle.

In Batman Vs. Superman, Jena Malone plays the DC Comics character Jenet Klyburn where she participates in a lab scene with Amy Adams’ Lois Lane.

In the comics, Jenet Klyburn is a doctor and director at Star Labs in Metropolis.

Jena Malone was also featured in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, so more or less it seems like Snyder was simply giving a friend a cameo.

Bryan Cranston As Lex Luthor Still Possible (Batman vs. Superman Ultimate Edition Spoilers)

This would be quite the doozy if WB could pull this one off…

We know Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige like to please their fans; Marvel and Feige even went and released the “All Hail The King” short as a result of negative fan reaction to the Mandarin in Iron Man 3.

Could WB do something similar with Lex Luthor?

Spoilers follow for Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition.

Fan reaction was mixed (at best) to Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor. We know Eisenberg wasn’t their first choice to play Lex. Actually, Eisenberg was set to play the role of Jimmy Olsen, who was killed off in the movie. Things changed and the script was rewritten to accommodate a younger Lex and the casting of Eisenberg.

So that means originally they were going with an older version of Lex Luthor, and I was told it was Bryan Cranston (who starred with Affleck in Argo). A friend who does work for WB filled me in that Bryan Cranston had been cast in Batman Vs. Superman. I knew the source personally and trusted the source completely — so much so that I put my money where my mouth was (how many “scoopers” ever do that?). Obviously, my info didn’t pan out (I was told Cranston changed his mind as he didn’t want to do another big villain role following Breaking Bad), and I made a donation to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor On E! News:

My news of Bryan Cranston being cast as Lex Luthor hit all the major newspapers and television stations (how may “scoopers” get that?). In the months to follow, Cranston would deny any involvement in Batman Vs. Superman, and it was the right thing to do as it wouldn’t have been professional to take the spotlight away from the actor that would be cast as Lex (Eisenberg).

“In the minds of fans, it’s true. In the minds of the hierarchy of Warner Bros. it’s not true,” Cranston told Howard Stern. “No. I was not involved in any of that whatsoever.”

However, following the release of Batman Vs. Superman, Zack Snyder revealed they did interview Bryan Cranston for the role, and Snyder’s comments sound as if he wanted Cranston. Check it out (via EW):

At that point, they had were still interviewing actors about the Luthor role – most of them older, more imposing figures, such as Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston.

“We talked about the usual suspects that you would imagine; any actor who has been bald, probably,” Synder says. “Bryan Cranston would have been great, right? And by the way, he’s an amazing actor. Can you imagine how different the movie would be?”

“Can you imagine how different the movie would be?”  — Sounds like they really wanted Cranston, no?

Now on to the relevant info in the Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition.

A new scene between Lex (Eisenberg) and Senator Finch seemingly reveals that Lex Sr. may be alive. That’s right, Eisenberg is playing Lex Jr. in the movie.

“Maybe if I keep everything the same, Dad will come back,” Lex Jr. tells Senator Finch.

A Tumblr fan who has seen the footage describes the scene as: “He talks about his Dad almost as if he’s not dead.”

So does that mean Lex Sr. is not actually dead – that he can come back?

It was first thought that Lex Sr. was dead due to a joint promotion between WB and Fortune magazine. A promo “interview” with Lex Jr. revealed that Lex Sr. had “passed away unexpectedly in 2000.” But does that mean Lex Sr. actually died? Or did he disappear and was presumed dead? We can even speculate that the promo interview may simply have nothing do with the movie as it’s just a part of a viral marketing campaign (or even incorrect).

The good news is that if WB does decide to bring back Lex Sr., that quite possibly Bryan Cranston may want the role. Cranston changed his tune in regards to playing a villain as last October saw Cranston make mention he would like to play a “big superhero villain,” though at the time he mentioned for a Marvel movie (as possibly he thought he dropped the ball in regards to DC’s Lex?).

Now that we see there is a way for Lex Sr. to come back, what do you say Mr. Cranston? Will you make the Justice League say your name?

Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition May Reveal Suicide Squad Cameo Spoiler

Update: The footage has hit the net.

Spoilers follow for the Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition extended cut.

Don’t read any further if you don’t want to know as info is revealed for a certain scene in the movie.

The Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition has been released early on a couple of streaming sites, with fans posting spoilers and specifics starting last night.

One scene may reveal that Jesse Eisenberg has a role in Suicide Squad.

We were all pretty much lost in regards to why Lex was acting all goofy at the end of the movie. WB did release that deleted scene, which sort of helped out, but now further details are released in an extended scene that is a part of the Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition.

In the end prison scene, when Batman confronts Lex, Lex makes it clear that he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman. Lex tells Batman and laughs/smiles: “Look at us. This is how it all caves in. Civilization. Wayne Manor. Out the window. But who would believe me? I’m insane. I’m not even fit to stand trial.”

Batman replies, “That’s right. We have hospitals to treat and heal with compassion, but that’s not where you’re going. I arranged for you to be transferred to Arkham Asylum in Gotham.” Lex then stops smiling.

Fans will recall that director David Ayer tweeted a while back of what looked like Jesse Eisenberg on the set of Suicide Squad (see below).

It was also revealed over a year ago that Eisenberg was in talks for Suicide Squad, and Eisenberg also said he would love to do the movie and couldn’t say much because WB wanted to keep things a surprise.

The Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition goes on sale digitally June 28th and on Blu-Ray July 19th. You can order through Amazon.

Update: A possible Batman Vs. Superman and Suicide Squad connection cameo becomes known.

Update #2: Lex Sr. may still be alive.

Spoiler details:

The JL setup is still the email scene.

What happens after the capitol scene? Does Superman help any people wounded people?
He does. And then looks around at all the death and gets sad.

Who is Dan Amboyer playing?
He’s in it about 5 seconds. He is the drone pilot who fulfills the command to fire a drone missile on the Africa compound.
A nameless drone pilot. He’s essentially an extra.

Clark going to Gotham scene:
He doesn’t learn from him on the news (now sees the woman from Africa hearing being interviewed). After the statue is defaced he decides to go to Gotham to locate her and talk to her, but she’s not home. Then guy with lotto ticket mentions Batman. This leads him to ask Perry about doing the story like in the TC. He learns about the branding and other Batman stuff later on in a brief research scene before Perry informs him he’s been requested to cover the Library fundraiser (Perry doesn’t know who made the request, but obviously it was Lex). Later, after Lex arranges for the branded guy to get killed in prison and Clark gets the photos he goes to the Gotham PD and ends up speaking to the woman who is mother to that man’s child. She mocks his ability to do anything about Batman as a reported and says such !en only understands fists. This leads to the Batmobile meeting.

so that gotham bat news report is cut out entirely?
There are 5-6 more scenes with the woman from Africa in the UC, so likely what happened was when they cut her part down they decided to move the scene of Clark reading news reports about the Batman to him seeing a news report.

On Jena Malone:
Unless she shows up again, they never say who she is. She’s like a lab technician. Helps Lois figure out the bullet.
Metropolis lab or Gotham lab?
Daily Planet.
She’s Janet Klyburn of STAR Labs, a 70s-80s comic character.

Doomsday fight:
Not to the fight itself that I could tell. Doomsday now destroys a helicopter when he jumps up to the Lex tower, and then later destroys another helicopter by throwing part of the Lex sign at it. That’s the only changes I noticed.

Various thoughts:

The major difference is that 95% of the flow issues are resolved. From a story standpoint, the Africa scenes, Clark’s investigation into Batman, Lex’s manipulating of Clark, and Lois’ investigation leading to Lex are much clearer. But it’s essentially the same story otherwise.

So far, it’s not that different. The pacing is much better already though (I’m only like 50 minutes in). Scenes last longer, so it’s not so choppy.

It’s the same movie though, so it’s not like a radically different experience.

Ben Affleck Says Batman Movie Will Feature Original Story

We now know a solo Batman movie is in the works written by Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns.

Back while promoting Batman Vs. Superman in March, Affleck was asked if he was directing a solo Batman movie, would he use the stories from Batman: The Killing Joke or Red Hood. Affleck replies he would do an original story, so it would be something new for the fans, but would borrow what he could from the comics.

Here’s the blurb via Cines Argentinos.

I think what I would do, what I probably would do, is in some ways what Zack did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it because I wouldn’t want the fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow, steal, great things that have been done before in the comics.

We can obviously guess Affleck was writing the Batman movie at the time of being questioned, so his answer probably sheds light on his and Geoff Johns’ direction for the movie, which is speculated to be titled The Batman.

Russell Crowe Confirms Plans For Multiple Superman Movies Were Scrapped

At one time, Zack Snyder and David Goyer planned on having a Man of Steel sequel prior to Batman Vs. Superman.

That all went down the tubes when Man of Steel didn’t hit a billion dollars (sound familiar?).

Now Russell Crowe is asked about why he didn’t appear in Batman Vs. Superman while chatting with Digital Spy in which he offers multiple Superman movies were at least being thought about at one time.

“No,” Crowe responded when asked if there was any talk about him returning for Batman v Superman. “I think once they made the decision that… Because originally, I could be completely wrong, I think there was a number of Superman movies, but I think they made the decision to go to… jump past those and go to the idea of having Batman and Superman in the same film. So no, I didn’t have any discussions about that at all.”

Crowe also says he hasn’t seen Batman Vs. Superman.

At one point Russell Crowe stated he was interested in doing a Superman prequel Krypton movie as well. Now it seems Goyer has taken that idea to SyFy with the Krypton series.

To date, WB has yet to announce a new Superman movie, though they did just kill the character and butcher just about everything related to his mythology.

It’s also been said that in addition to new solo Superman movies, new solo Batman movies would have been released prior to Justice League. Guess we now know which was the right way to go.

Willa Holland Confirms Arrow Character Deaths Because of DC Movies

Willa Holland and Katrina Law appeared at the recent MCM London Comic-Con where they confirmed character deaths on Arrow are a result of the DC movies.

Holland and Law confirmed the Suicide Squad character deaths in Arrow were a result of the movie, and it’s heavily speculated the same applies to the recent death of Black Canary in the series as well. It’s also been said Atom was used instead of Blue Beetle because of potential movie plans.

Holland and Law also make comments that they think both Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin would have killed it in the DC movie universe if allowed to play their respective characters of Green Arrow and The Flash.

Watch the video below for more.

Holland offered:

When DC found out they were going to be doing their own movie we had to axe all of the characters before we even got to show them.

It was annoying at first and then when Stephen found out there was going to be a Justice League movie it only seemed, rightly so, he would be playing Green Arrow on it as well as Grant playing the Flash. It just seemed like the right normal answer.

Once they said no, you can’t really fight against them for it, because they are the people that gave us a job in the first place.

You just have to sit there on your hands, like okay, I get it!”

Watchmen Co-Creator Dave Gibbons Slams Batman Vs. Superman & DC

Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons attended the recent MCM London Comic-Con where he talked about DC and Marvel.

Last week saw DC Comics release their big Rebirth issue which tied the DC Comics universe directly into the Gibbons and Alan Moore’s Watchmen universe.

Gibbons didn’t seem too pleased by that.

“I wouldn’t make the question too long. All I’m going to say is no comment,” Gibbons said when Rebirth and Doctor Manhattan were brought up. “I have no comment.”

Gibbons was then asked if he consulted on Rebirth or if DC bothered to drop him an e-mail.

“No, they didn’t. And that’s all I’m going to say,” Gibbons said.

Gibbons then went on length about his thoughts on the DC film universe, Batman Vs. Superman, and the Marvel Universe (watch the full video below):

“I feel that what is happening now with the DC characters in film, to my mind, is going in the wrong direction… What Marvel has seemed to have done is take their characters, with a dark side and a light side, and their humor and their pathos, and their human emotion, and they actually have a long vision of what they’re going to do. They put together films that are really entertaining, that are exciting, that do have threat and jeopardy, but have humor and a human quality to it, and a sense of hope.

But I feel what DC has done particularly with the Superman vs. Batman movie is they really have taken a misstep on it. I mean, I wrote a comic book called World’s Finest, which was Superman vs. Batman, and what I homed in, and I am not saying this is the only take, but it might have helped, was you have Batman who is a dark hidden creature who lives in a dark evil city whose antagonist is a brightly colored clown. You got Superman who is a brightly colored figure, the yang if you like to Batman’s yin, he lives in a bright hopeful city, but with a villain, an opponent, who is a dark grey scheming business man. So the whole universe’s are completely complimentary. When I wrote my story, I got a lot of mileage out of crossing those over, and it turned out Luthor went to Gotham, and the Joker went to Metropolis, and the Joker wanted to black out Metropolis, and Luthor wanted to set Gotham on fire.

So to me if you are doing Superman vs. Batman, the first thing, which is implied by the “vs,” is there has to be a difference, and I think where the latest film suffered was because they were both these dark opaque angsty creatures. I thought, I have to say that Ben Affleck’s Batman was brilliant. I thought if he’d been in a Batman film on his own… I also think DC sort of lost their nerve because Superman Vs. Batman, which is basically Frank Miller’s Dark Knight story, is enough for a movie without putting Doomsday in it, which is another complete Superman movie, without shoehorning The Flash and the Cyborg, and without Wonder Woman, she’s a movie in her own right.

Perhaps at the moment, I’m less than 100% thrilled with DC. I’m certainly not coming down on Zack, but to my taste, they kind of missed the [inaudible] there. I think also Marvel have been really bold. They introduced the characters slowly, so when they put them all in a movie together, it gave me that same thrill as I had when a kid when they put all the characters into the Avengers. ‘Wow! They’re all in one comic!’ And the latest Captain America [Civil War] movie, the bit when the two teams run toward each other with all their powers blazing was just ‘Oh! Yeah! This is what comics are all about!’ I think Marvel have done it with verve and wit. DC kind of missed out on that.”

Jesse Eisenberg Confirms Lex Luthor For Justice League

Following Batman Vs. Superman, Jesse Eisenberg will be back as Lex Luthor for Justice League.

Eisenberg appeared at this weekend’s MCM London Comic-Con and confirmed the news (via Digital Spy).

“I’m kind of in wait,” he said. “They just started filming Justice League, so I’m kind of like waiting for my crack at it.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to say, because I feel like there’s probably some drone following me from DC, and if I say anything wrong I get, you know, picked off. But yeah I think so, and I love it, and I love everybody who’s in it. You know, it’s a really talented group of people.”

Last we saw of Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, he was a babbling idiot in jail, which saw Batman pay a visit. Audiences seemed so confused by the scene that Warner Bros. actually released a deleted scene days after Batman Vs. Superman premiered in order to help explain what was going on.

“Justice League” has a November 17, 2017 release directed by Zack Snyder starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, J.K. Jeremy Irons Says Batman Vs. Superman Deserved A Kicking By Critics

The new Alfred for Batman Vs. Superman isn’t afraid to admit the movie had some faults.

In an interview with The Guardian, Irons agrees that Batman vs. Superman deserved a kicking from the critics, but does say it still made a lot of money.

“Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed,” Irons said. “It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”

Irons continues, possibly revealing the title of the Ben Affleck solo Batman movie, which Cosmic Book News was first told almost four years ago with “The Batman.”

“I’m tied into The Batman at the minute [the next installment, Justice League Part One, is due next year], which is nice because it’s a bit of income,” Irons said.

In Batman Vs. Superman, not only does Alfred play the “butler” role, but Alfred is also a highly trained soldier.

“If I was Mr and Mrs Wayne and I had a young son I thought could be kidnapped, killed or whatever because of his wealth, I’d make sure his guardian – his tutor, his mate – was somebody pretty capable,” Irons said.

Roven, who has been on the every DC film since Christopher Nolan’s 2005 Batman Begins, is said to no longer be producing certain DC movies, according to THR, with The Flash and Aquaman named (movies not yet filming).

It’s said talks are underway within WB to have Charles Roven as more of an executive producer role and one who is not involved in day-to-day production.

It is said that Roven could still be a producer on various sequels of movies he is already producing.

Charles Roven was producer on Man of Steel and Batman Vs. Superman and is currently the producer on Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League.

It’s noted that one reason for the shift is due to WB wanting to increase the number of DC productions, with it said it’s physically impossible for one man to handle all the load.

It recently became known that Geoff Johns and WB exec Jon Berg are now co-running the DC films, with this report adding Berg is handling day-to-day operations on Justice League.

Regarding Zack Snyder receiving any blame, no report has specifically mentioned any ramifications for the director, which could be due to WB simply not wanting bad publicity with Justice League coming out. It is said WB is moving away from Zack Snyder’s “brain trust” of which Charles Roven was a part of (and wife Deborah, Richard Suckle and Wesley Collar).

Geoff Johns Hints At Brighter & More Fun Justice League Movie Universe

While Geoff Johns has yet to admit he’s co-running DC films, the DC Entertainment chief creative officer and comic book writer may have provided a big clue that the DCEU will be a bit brighter and more fun in tone.

Johns, who has the big DC Comics Rebirth issue coming out tomorrow, updated his Facebook profile with an image of Superman Henry Cavill smiling, laughing and having a grand ol’ time, which may hint that since Johns is taking over the DC movie universe, that it may be a bit more upbeat than Batman Vs. Superman and Man of Steel.

The most recent report has stated that following the disappointment of Batman Vs. Superman, that Geoff Johns and WB exec Jon Berg will be co-running the DC film universe and have been named as producers on board Justice League.

Essentially, Johns has become the “Kevin Feige” of DC, but it could be argued Johns has a larger role as Johns works with the movies, TV, video games and comic books, while Feige is just in charge of Marvel Studios.

It would be cool if Johns was also teasing another Superman movie as well…

A new piece of Doomsday concept art from Batman Vs. Superman has surfaced online from artist Vance Kovacs.

We see it looks a bit different than the Doomsday from the movie as well as the comic books.

Redditors point out the Doomsday art almost resembles OMAC, who was at one time speculated for the movie.

The notes on the side read:

Body is result of ‘Genesis Chamber’ absorbing into Zod’s body as it grows from 6ft to 15ft.

Fluid courses through translucent membrane.

Kryptonian aesthetic..

WB Confirms Dead Robin Batman Vs. Superman Identity

Warner Bros. finally confirms the identity of the dead Robin from the Batman Vs. Superman costume seen in the Batcave.

A sneak peek at WB’s new DC Exhibit features the costume in which the tour guide confirms it’s for Jason Todd.

“This was one of the big things from Batman vs. Superman right across this way. The Jason Todd Robin suit,” Tour guide John confirms in the video below. “Spray painted on the front ‘Ha ha. The joke’s on you Batman.’ Those of you who know the storyline, know what happened to this Robin. Comic book fans unite!”

Tour guide John also noted the costumes used in the exhibit are not replicas, but authentic and straight from production.

Some other details about this Robin:

Affleck offered about Batman: “He’s bitterly disappointed in the past that he’s lost this guy who fought by his side. That character’s death must have been devastating to him, and he’s suffered. We get the sense that he’s suffered a lot of devastating losses before this movie even starts… He’s projecting his own sense of failure, his own sense of disillusionment, his own cynicism onto Superman.

Zack Snyder on this Robin: “In my mind it was that Robin died about ten years earlier during some run-in with a young Joker, and that was interesting to me, sort of a fun back story to play with. I felt like the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice. In a weird way he sacrificed everything to be Batman. He doesn’t have a life outside the cave. I thought by including Robin – a dead Robin –  was helping us understand that he’s been on quite a little journey.”

It’s been rumored that Jason Todd and the Red Hood will be a part of the Ben Affleck Batman movie as well.
