‘Super Mario World’ Title Revealed For Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel

'Super Mario World' Title Revealed For Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel

Whoops! Thanks to a press release for NBCUniversal’s recent upfronts for advertisers, the title for the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks to have been revealed as “Super Mario World.”

Super Mario World fits as the sequel title – spoilers – as the post-credit scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Yoshi, who first debuted in the Super Nintendo Game, Super Mario World. It also fits with details when the sequel was announced last year.

Title leak

However, as spotted by eagle-eyed fans, NBCUniversal edited and removed “Super Mario World” from the press release, so the title may not be official or even the full title, possibly just a placeholder.

NBCUniversal also removed mention of “Shrek” and “Minions,” which are more general titles for Shrek 5 and Minions 3, which might also have different titles, hence why all three have been removed.

That said, “Super Mario World” is a lot more specific than either “Shrek” or “Minions.” Maybe the official title is The Super Mario World Movie?

Regardless, again, it fits with the post-credit scene of the first movie and the details announced for the sequel (see below).

“Super Mario World” movie details

Assuming Super Mario World is the title, the details revealed when the sequel was first announced back in early 2024 include an  April 3, 2026 release date.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to direct. The script is again from Matthew Fogel, and Super Mario World is being produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto.

The announcement video also featured Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto who specifically mentions “world”:

“Now, as for the details of the new movie, as I often say, we’ll let you know once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share more. This time, we’ are thinking about broadening Mario’s world further and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it! That’s all for now. Happy Mario Day!”

What happened in The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario and Luigi get pulled from Brooklyn into the Mushroom Kingdom, where they team up with Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong to stop Bowser from using the Power Star to conquer the world.

The film ends with a big battle in Brooklyn, where Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser using the Super Star. Afterward, the brothers decide to stay in the Mushroom Kingdom.

And in a post-credit scene, the camera pans through the Brooklyn sewers, where we see a familiar green-spotted egg begin to crack—teasing the arrival of Yoshi, who famously debuted in the Super Mario World video game for the Super Nintendo.
