Disney’s Bob Iger Not Worried About Competition Because “We’re Marvel”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21283:]]

Disney’s Bob Iger is pretty confident in the Marvel brand.

The CEO recently told journalists that he isn’t too worried about competition from other comic book movies noting: “We’re Marvel.”

“We’re Marvel,” Iger stated at a media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, reports Variety. “We’ve done a great job of building the Marvel brand, which we think when it’s on a movie really makes a difference. We’re seeing signs of that.”

Iger continued with mention that he’s confidet in Ant-Man and Doctor Strange because of Marvel as well.

“We like the Marvel slate that we have coming up,” Iger added. “We think they’re unique in many ways and have no concerns [about competition] whatsoever.”

The report also mentions Iger wouldn’t go into details about their upcoming Star Wars plans, which is speculated to include a “Star Wars Land,” but did confirm theme park exhibits are in the works.

“We’re going to increase the presence of Star Wars in our parks,” Iger said.

Iger also wouldn’t offer much about Star Wars: The Force Awakens other than confirming the film will have a precense at this week’s Comic-Con.

Young Han Solo Star Wars Movie In Development

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21259:]]

Update: StarWars.com has confirmed Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will helm a Han Solo Star Wars anthology movie (read the official announcment below).

It’s being reported plans are underway for a Star Wars spinoff movie featuring a young Han Solo.

THR reports Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the duo behind The LEGO Movie and the Jump Street movies, will be writing, directing and producing the Han Solo Star Wars anthology movie for Disney.

It’s noted this is a new Star Wars project and not the one that was to have been directed by Josh Trank, who recently parted ways with Disney. According to the report, Trank’s Star Wars movie is the origin story for Boba Fett and is still searching for a director.

It’s noted that Miller and Lord were to direct The Flash movie starring Ezra Miller, but it’s stated that is likely off the table as is the third Jump Street movie. It’s is mentioned the duo could still stay on as writers and/or producers on both The Flash and another Jump Street.

The planned animated Spider-Man movie at Sony from Lord and Miller may still be intact as they are only set to write a treatment for the story and produce.

It’s further said Miller and Lord will still be involved in the LEGO movie franchise, but in what capacity is unclear.

A young Han Solo Star Wars project has been rumored for some time, with Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul said to be up for the role at one time.

Update:

Info:

CHRISTOPHER MILLER AND PHIL LORD TO HELM HAN SOLO ANTHOLOGY FILM

THE DUO BEHIND THE LEGO MOVIE WILL DIRECT AN EARLY TALE OF THE SMUGGLER-TURNED-HERO, WITH A SCREENPLAY BY LAWRENCE AND JON KASDAN.

The next adventure in the Anthology series of Star Wars films will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, whose credits include the critically acclaimed The LEGO Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, as well as 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. Among the most sought-after filmmakers working today, the two have proven a formidable duo on the multiple films they’ve collaborated on and are looking forward to applying their unique creative chemistry to the Star Wars universe.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

The screenplay is written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan. The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.

Lawrence Kasdan, the writer and director known for Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill, and Grand Canyon, is familiar to Star Wars fans for having co-written the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. His son Jon Kasdan wrote and directed The First Time, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and In the Land of Women, as well as writing for the television series Freaks and Geeks and Dawson’s Creek.

We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

Kathleen Kennedy, who will be producing, says she can’t wait to discover what’s in store from these two extraordinary teams of directors and writers.

“It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

Slated for a May 25, 2018 release, the film will be executive produced by Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin and co-produced by Will Allegra.

Now Disney Withholds New Star Wars Footage From Comic-Con

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21242:]]

Not only is Disney holding back Marvel Studios from appearing at Comic-Con, but now it’s learned there will be no new Star Wars footage.

Regarding Marvel Studios, while Kevin Feige tried to explain Marvel didn’t have anything to show off (“the timing wasn’t right”), Marvel could have easily done something for Ant-Man, which opens next week, as well as could have featured new Spider-Man Tom Holland and probably could have done something for Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange if they really wanted to.

At least Disney will have a Star Wars panel, but EW.com reports no new trailers, clips or footage will be shown.

What is stated to be coming at Comic-Con from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a behind-the-scenes look at the film in addition to J.J. Abrams, Disney LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy and some members of the cast apeparing from the movie.

It’s assumed Disney is saving future Marvel Studios news for August’s Disney D23 Expo, and now it’s likely new Star Wars footage may debut then.

EW’s report does note a new Star Wars trailer is due out in the Fall.

The Star Wars Comic-Con panel takes place this Friday.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has a December 18, 2015 release directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Boba Fett & Han Solo Star Wars TV Series Rumored With Michelle MacLaren

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21095:]]

The latest Star Wars rumor to hit the net is in regards to the Star Wars: Underworld TV series that was at one time in development with 50 scripts written for the potential series.

A new blog, Screen Wire, was just launched by some dude named Shane who is stating Michelle MacLaren is up to direct the Star Wars: Underworld TV series.

According to the rumor, while MacLaren’s name has surfaced for a Star Wars spinoff, it’s actually for a Star Wars TV series that will feature Boba Fett and Han Solo.

It’s also said the other Star Wars rumors surrounding a Star Wars spinoff movie about Boba Fett may be incorrect as the details are actually for the Star Wars TV series.

It’s also not clear whether or not the “Star Wars: Underworld” title will still be used as well as the 50 scripts, or if Disney will just reboot.

Michelle MacLaren recent departed Wonder Woman at Warner Bros. and is known for her TV work on Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

Interestingly enough, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul has been rumored to be playing a young Han Solo — perhaps at MacLaren’s request?

Ewan McGregor & Darth Maul Star Wars Spinoff Rumored Again

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20847:]]

It’s once again being said that Disney may be going with a Star Wars spinoff featuring Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, which may even feature Darth Maul.

Back in March of 2013, we first revealed possible details that Disney was considering a Star Wars spinoff with McGregor and Maul.

We were told it could be set between Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV featuring Ewan McGregor reprising the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in his exile on Tatooine, with the villain being Darth Maul who hunts down his nemesis with a possible plot point involving a young Luke Skywalker somehow tied into the story possibly as bait for Obi-Wan.

Now over two years later, Shmoes Know is reporting pretty much the same thing.

A source is theirs is stating conversations are taking place behind close doors that McGregor wil once again “transform into the venerable Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi” – not as a “force ghost, but for a post-Episode III Kenobi.”

It’s also aid Disney wants an Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy of films, which would be outside the new anthology spinoffs.

Regarding the possible plot of the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, according to the source the: “film (or films) would focus on Obi-Wan’s adventures between the two trilogies as he watches over a maturing Luke Skywalker. The film(s) would be standalone adventure(s), with the possibility of characters like Owen Lars and Darth Maul appearing.”

Disney Playmation Avengers Trailer & Announcement

Today, Disney Consumer Products introduced the world to Playmation – the next step in the evolution of play, where digital gets physical and imagination becomes real. The groundbreaking system of toys and wearables uses smart technology to inspire kids to run around and use their imaginations, as they become the hero or heroine of stories from across The Walt Disney Company.

“Innovation and creativity are the driving forces behind Disney, and our goal is to inspire children to unleash the power of their imaginations through the stories we tell and the experiences we create. With Playmation, we’re taking the next step in that tradition – bringing the worlds of play, storytelling, and technology together – in a new and very exciting way,” said Leslie Ferraro, president of Disney Consumer Products.

She continued: “Playmation takes the best the digital world has to offer and uses it to create supercharged, real world play. This is play updated for today’s kids – bringing their imaginations to life as they go on active adventures alongside their favorite characters.”

Dreamed up by a team of technologists, Imagineers and storytellers from across The Walt Disney Company, Playmation is the culmination of extensive research into the world of play. A new third party study commissioned by Disney1 reveals that parents feel nostalgia for the way they used to play growing up and that they also have a desire to keep their kids active. The study also found that children enjoy being active—yet at the same time, they have a growing appetite for technology-infused products.

The online study of 2,000 families across the country shows that while almost all parents believe in the power of active and creative play, they believe technology is also an important part of growing up today. In fact, 9 out of 10 parents are open to new technology that could play a role in keeping their child active.

“The study highlights a major opportunity to meet the needs of both parents and kids with a new way to play,” said Kareem Daniel, Senior Vice President, Strategy and Business Development. “Playmation uses technology to make active, physical play even more fun. It puts kids at the center of our stories in a way we’ve never been able to before.”

Playmation also marks a new chapter in Disney Consumer Products’ long-term partnership with Hasbro. DCP and Hasbro collaborated on physical product design and manufacturing of Playmation. Hasbro’s record of innovation and consumer insights make them the perfect partner to ensure that Playmation is a truly ground-breaking play experience.

“This is classic play for the millennial generation,” said Jim Silver, editor in chief and CEO of TTPM. “Playmation takes the role play category to a new level of engagement with their breakthrough interactive play. It is the entry point into a new category of toys that bring digital experiences into the real world. With Playmation, Disney Consumer Products is going to raise the bar in the world of play.”

Playmation Marvel’s Avengers is the first in a series of systems in development around Walt Disney Company franchises, and will hit shelves this October. At launch, the Playmation Marvel’s Avengers Starter Pack will include five connected toys: one piece of Avenger Gear (Repulsor), two Power Activators and two Smart Figures – a Super Hero (Captain America) and a Super Villain (Iron Skull). Getting started is easy, strap the high-tech Repulsor Gear onto your arm (it fits adults, too!) and listen closely to JARVIS as he takes you through the tutorial on how to control your new Gear, inspired by Iron Man technology. Other Playmation Marvel’s Avengers connected toys that work with the Starter Pack will also be available separately for purchase at launch, with more on the way.

Also available at launch, is the AvengersNet app where you can register your Avenger Gear to see progress, explore additional locations and characters, and get access to new missions. New recruits to the Avengers can fight Marvel Super Villains including Ultron, Iron Skull, Loki, or join fellow Avengers Super Heroes like Black Widow, Falcon and more as they battle to save the Earth by running, jumping, ducking and dodging – whatever each challenge requires.

“With Playmation Marvel’s Avengers, the very best of Marvel storytelling is infused into every aspect of the system to further spark imaginative, active play,” said Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “Playmation offers kids a dynamic way to interact with their favorite Super Heroes – I wish it was around when I was a kid!”

Playmation Marvel’s Avengers uses familiar technologies including smart toys, wearables, wireless technology, motion sensors and more, but applies them in ways that are completely new to create an experience that’s never been possible before. The Repulsor Gear connects with the Power Activators and Smart Figures to take you on a variety of adventures through locations around the Marvel Universe, from the Avengers Lab in New York to the jungles of Wakanda. Playmation is purposely not tethered to an Internet connection so players can run around and explore each adventure from anywhere they want – a bedroom, living room or yard. With multiplayer modes, recruits can sync their Avenger Gear to tackle missions and combat arenas together, or face off in competitive play.

The Playmation Marvel’s Avengers Starter Pack will have a suggested retail price of $119.99 and will launch in October 2015 in the United States and Canada at mass and specialty retailers, select Disney Store locations and DisneyStore.com, and will be available for pre-order starting July 7.

Star Wars and Disney Frozen systems are currently in development for 2016 and 2017, respectively. Each will use a range of technologies to create a system based on the different ways that kids play and experience their favorite stories and characters from that franchise.

Star Wars & Avengers Join Forces For Industrial Light & Magic Image

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20645:]]

Check out a gatefold image from Wired for the 40th Anniversary of LucasFilm Industrial Light & Magic featuring some of the well known characters and creators from the various movies ILM has worked on.

We see characters from Star Wars, where the old meets the new with Yoda and the new bot from The Force Awakens, BB-8, in addition to George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and JJ Abrams; a Velociraptor from Jurassic Park, and Steven Spielberg and ET. That also looks to be Ant-Man standing on the “I.”

The second image features Bumblebee and Michael Bay from the Transformers franchise; Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson; Ron Howard; Guillermo del Toro; a T-1000 Terminator, and Rango.

The third image features the Hulk and Iron Man from the Avengers; Lynwen Brennan of Avatar; Gore Verbinski with Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean; Colin Trevorrow of Jurassic World, and Duncan Jones of Warcraft, in addition to Slimer from Ghosbusters.

Industrial Light & Magic started when Fox finally greenlit Star Wars by giving George Lucas $25,000 to finish the screenplay; however, Fox had no special effects division of their own – so Lucas went out and created one.

“Industrial Light & Magic was born in a sweltering warehouse behind the Van Nuys airport in the summer of 1975.”

Simon Pegg Responds To Dumbing Down Pop Culture Comments

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20637:]]

Simon Pegg has found himself in the hot seat once again.

Following the actor letting it slip Daniel Craig is in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while appearing on the Radio Times, Pegg caused some controversy by stating pop culture is keeping socities as infants.

Via io9:

Before Star Wars, the films that were box-office hits were The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Bonnie And Clyde and The French Connection – gritty, amoral art movies. Then suddenly the onus switched over to spectacle and everything changed … I don’t know if that is a good thing.

… Obviously I’m very much a self-confessed fan of science fiction and genre cinema but part of me looks at society as it is now and just thinks we’ve been infantilised by our own taste. Now we’re essentially all consuming very childish things – comic books, superheroes. Adults are watching this stuff, and taking it seriously.

It is a kind of dumbing down, in a way, because it’s taking our focus away from real-world issues. Films used to be about challenging, emotional journeys or moral questions that might make you walk away and re-evaluate how you felt about … whatever.

Now we’re walking out of the cinema really not thinking about anything, other than the fact that the Hulk just had a fight with a robot.

Now Pegg has realized the statements have gone viral and took to his blog to clarify his comments with a post titled “Big Mouth Strikes Again,” which reads in part:

Now, maybe I was being a little bit trollish, I can be a bit of a Contrary Mary in interviews sometimes. When you do lots of them, you get sick of your own opinions and start espousing other people’s. Having said that, the idea of our prolonged youth is something I’ve been interested in for a very long time. It’s essentially what Spaced was about, at least in part.

And:

The ‘dumbing down’ comment came off as a huge generalisation by an A-grade asshorn. I did not mean that science fiction or fantasy are dumb, far from it. How could I say that? In the words of Han Solo, “Hey, it’s me!” In the last two weeks, I have seen two brilliant exponents of the genre. Ex Machina and Mad Max: Fury Road, both of which had my head spinning in different and wonderful ways and are both very grown up films (although Max has a youthful exuberance which is nothing’s short of joyous, thanks George Miller, 70) I’ve yet to see Tomorrowland but with Brad Bird at the helm, it cannot be anything but a hugely entertaining think piece.

I guess what I meant was, the more spectacle becomes the driving creative priority, the less thoughtful or challenging the films can become.

And:

Also, it’s good to ask why we like this stuff, what makes it so alluring, so discussed, so sacred. Do we channel our passion and indignation into ephemera, rather than reality? Not just science fiction and fantasy but gossip and talent shows and nostalgia and people’s arses. Is it right? Is it dangerous? Something to discuss over a game of 3D chess, perhaps.

Pegg also made mention that Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan are in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is guessed to be just Pegg having fun and trolling the fans. Or is it?

No Lando Calrissian For Star Wars: The Force Awakens

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20633:]]

Lawrence Kasdan lets it be known Star Wars: The Force Awakens does not feature Lando Calrissian, who was played by Billy Dee Williams in the original Trilogy.

“Right now, there’s no Lando Calrissian in this movie,” Kasdan told Vanity Fair.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Lando won’t eventually be seen in a future Star Wars movie.

“Lando I don’t think is finished in any way, shape, or form,” he added.

Worth a mention is that Lando Calrissian and Billy Dee Williams didn’t appear until Empire Strikes Back, the second movie of the original trilogy and written by Kasdan, so perhaps they will follow a similar route and have Lando back for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Billy Dee Williams hasn’t been shy about returning to Star Wars, so it looks likely we’ll eventually see Lando Calrissian in some capacity.

Regarding Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kasdan offers: “And this new movie, first of all, it’s turning out really great. J.J. directed it so beautifully, and it’s so exhilarating and everything. It’s a big movie. It’s full of wonderful stuff, incident and character stuff and jokes and effects. One of the things that we always refocus on from the get-go was that it not be one of these very long, bloated blockbusters.”

Star Wars & Marvel TV Channels Possibly On The Way

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20580:]]

Possibly joining the Disney channels, ESPN and ABC could be Star Wars and Marvel.

SlashFilm reports at a recent investors call, Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned the possibility of Star Wars and Marvel channels.

“We have said that with these channels and these brands — ESPN, ABC, Disney, maybe even down the road something related to Star Wars and Marvel — we do have an ability as a company to take product, specifically filmed entertainment, television, movies, directly to consumers,” Iger offered.

It’s noted Iger didn’t elaborate on the Star Wars or Marvel channels, but it’s not too hard to guess what they may feature.

Obviously a Star Wars or Marvel channel would feature all the past movies and animated series, with the possibility futher down the line of having original shows and series. It’s even possible one day that the Star Wars or Marvel Disney channels would exclusively feature the branded series – say, instead of Netflix.

As of right now, it’s basically just talk, but the potential is definitely out there. An added bonus if they do create original content for the Star Wars and Marvel channels would be the use of more obscure characters.

Daniel Craig’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens Cameo Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20579:]]

Back in September of last year it was reported Daniel Craig had filmed a mystery cameo for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Now, apparently, Simon Pegg has confirmed the appearance of James Bond.

The UK’s Independent reports Simon Pegg confirmed Daniel Craig will be a Stormtrooper.

At the Red Carpet London premiere for Man Up in London, Simom Pegg was asked about his own rumored appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens where Pegg told The Sun, “I wasn’t a Stormtrooper. Daniel Craig, he was a Stormtrooper.”

It’s then reported Pegg caught himself and quickly added, “I shouldn’t have said that.”

It’s further added an insider stated Daniel Craig just wanted some sort of secret cameo role, and didn’t want to be a part of any promotion or have his name listed on posters. It appears as Daniel Craig’s face won’t be seen in the movie as “fans will love trying to work out which covered up character is him .”

Daniel Craig stars in James Bond Spectre which is out November 6th.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has a December 18, 2015 release.
