Ryan Reynolds Says Deadpool Works Better As A Supporting Character Amid Avengers Rumors

Ryan Reynolds is talking Deadpool again, and this time he sounds a lot more interested in keeping the Merc With a Mouth in the mix rather than front and center.

While appearing on TODAY (watch below), Reynolds was asked about what could be next for Deadpool following the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Reynolds said, “I have stuff written,” but added, “I don’t think I’m going to center him again. I think he is a supporting character. He is a guy that’s great in a group.”

That lines up with what Reynolds has said before about Deadpool needing the right reason to come back. It also fits the current rumors that he could show up in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Secret Wars, where a supporting role in a larger ensemble would make a lot of sense.

Deadpool & Wolverine Makes The Oscars Short List

Ryan Reynolds has already downplayed Marvel return rumors

The comments are notable because Reynolds previously tried to cool off speculation that he had already returned to Marvel, saying he hasn’t stepped one foot on set.

So while Reynolds is clearly writing and thinking about Deadpool’s future, his latest comments suggest fans probably shouldn’t expect another solo movie built entirely around Wade Wilson anytime soon.

Instead, it sounds like Reynolds sees Deadpool as better used alongside other heroes, especially in group settings where the character can bounce off bigger personalities and add chaos without carrying the whole story.

Deadpool & Wolverine Box Office Slams Past $600 Million Domestically

Deadpool and the X-Men could be the real play

That also matches what was previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter, which said Reynolds has been exploring ideas for a new Deadpool movie involving X-Men characters.

According to that report, Reynolds has been working on a treatment for an ensemble film featuring three or four X-Men characters, with Deadpool appearing more in a supporting role.

The idea is said to be that keeping Deadpool more on the sidelines could allow the X-Men to be used in more unexpected ways.
