Following Deadpool & Wolverine making over $1.3 billion at the box office and breaking all kinds of records, Ryan Reynolds teases the future of the Merc With A Mouth and says the character won’t work if he is a member of the Avengers or the X-Men.
Reynolds appeared on Wednesday at the 2025 TIME100 Summit in New York City, where it was mentioned that he previously said Deadpool works best as a supporting character.

Deadpool returning to the MCU
It’s pointed out that Marvel has a number of upcoming movies involving the X-Men (Avengers: Doomsday) where Deadpool could play a supporting character. Reynolds is asked if Deadpool will be involved.
Reynolds responded:
“I do think so.”

What works best for Deadpool?
Reynolds then went on to explain how how he thinks Deadpool works best:
“I think you—yeah, he works. I mean, in order for a character that talks like that to work, he has—you have to take everything away from him. So, his skin, his face, he’s covered in scars, he’s bald, he wears the mask out of shame.”

Path to redemption
The actor also explained his approach to the three movies:
So I hijacked the first movie. I used the character to tell a story about shame. Then a story about family for the second movie, and this one being about redemption.
And I think we nailed redemption, because redemption is something—one of the great American exports, I think.
It’s like when you miss something or someone, but you didn’t know you missed them.
It’s a very unique feeling for an audience.

More Wesley Snipes Blade
Reynolds also again says he wants to see more from Wesley Snipes:
To see people like the characters—like Blade, with Wesley Snipes—who’s a guy that should have a third act in this moment. Like, that’s a huge movie star.
You know, and that feeling and that gasp that comes out of people when he crosses the frame in the movie—
It’s just like, I don’t know, it’s a feeling I just want more of. And I think I’d be able to do that as the supporting actor.

Something new is in the works
Reynolds even says he is writing something which sounds like it will feature another large number of characters:
I’m writing a little something right now that is—I don’t know—an ensemble
Update: Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld hints on Twitter that Reynolds is actually referring to his non-Marvel movie reteaming him with Shawn Levy and Hugh Jackman.
“Gentle reminder that he is writing a movie called ‘Boy Band,'” tweeted Liefeld.

No Avengers or X-Men
Reynolds adds that he doesn’t think Deadpool should even become an Avenger or an X-Men:
You know, I like that he’s isolated.
If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Men, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that for a long time.
