'Revenge of the Sith' Tops Box Office as Star Wars Fans Pack Theaters

Star Wars is back on top of the box office as fans flock to theaters to see the 20th anniversary release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith for the limited one-week engagement.

The Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith 20th Anniversary opened last night with Thursday previews and topped the box office for new releases with $3.4M.

Revenge of the Sith Reigns at the Box Office, Signals Star Wars Fans Still Show Up

Hayden Christensen’s return as Anakin Skywalker embracing the Dark Side is on track to claim the #2 at the weekend box office, with estimates projecting $20 million or more.

That should be enough to beat out Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s The Accountant 2, which did $2.5M in Thursday previews. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners also brought in another $6M on Thursday and looks to take the top spot overall for the weekend in its second outing. The new horror movie, Until Dawn, from David F. Sandberg, did $1M.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, having a great turnout, hopefully signals to Disney that Star Wars fans are still out there, they’re just waiting on the right content. As I tweeted, the screenings are sold out. Hayden Christensen also got involved in the promotion. Pretty cool.

What’s next for Hayden Christensen?

As announced recently at Star Wars Celebration Japan, Hayden Christensen is confirmed to be returning as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka Season 2, which begins filming soon.

“I think my understanding of the character is just continuing to grow,” he told Complex. “We’re getting to explore different sides of Anakin, which I’m really enjoying. I’m just enjoying the journey.”

Christensen continued, “He’s a very complex character, and there’s a lot going on. But I’m really loving getting to sort of play the more heroic side of the character in the Ahsoka show, and I’m very excited for Season 2.”

Would like to return as Darth Vader

Hayden Christensen also said he wouldn’t mind returning as Darth Vader.

“There’s a lot that we could still explore with Vader,” he told Comic Book. “I think from where we left off, after Episode III, and everything that he has to reconcile after he’s trapped in this new version of himself, there’s just a lot of very rich stories that we could still tell.”

He added, “I’d love to get to continue with it, and so hopefully we’ll get to do more of it.”
