Next Summer will see Guillermo Del Toro‘s epic sci-fi robot monster movie, Pacific Rim, unleashed upon the world.
The movie sees an invasion by monsters, Kaiju, threatening the entire planet; in turn, humankind builds gigantic robot mechs, called the Jaegers, to battle the gigantic creatures.
Guillermo Del Toro recently attended the New York Comic-Con where the director described in detail — the Kaiju.
The Kaiju are created a perfect trap because they are not carbon-based organisms, they are silicon-based organisms. So it takes a while to figure out something that is not carbon-based. How does it work? Which are the organs? Which one is the heart? It’s like opening an earthworm and being a layman. Is that the spleen or the brain?
The second thing that the Kaiju do which is, they decompose and they release an agent called Kaiju-[inaudible] that completely destroys the cities, makes the air impossible to breathe. The blood is completely acidic. So they figure out that the base of fluid of the Kaiju is ammonia-based. So how do they neutralize it? But it takes a while because, first of all, it melts the pavement, melts the structures around it, makes a noxious gas. By the time they get to a Kaiju, the first few attacks, they can’t even get samples or corpses or pieces to analyze it. The Kaijus are essentially triggered to self destroy if they fall. So it’s a very smart weapon.
Maybe we’ll get our first look at these behemoths from the deep next month as it’s thought that the first Pacific Rim trailer may be attached to The Hobbit.
Pacific Rim opens July 12th, 2013, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman.
Synopsis:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
