Nightwing Movie Getting LEGO Batman’s Chris McKay As Director

In addition to the official Matt Reeves directing Batman announcement, it’s learned WB is developing a live-action Nightwing movie with Lego Batman movie director Chris McKay in talks to direct.

THR reports the DCEU Nightwing movie will be written by The Accountant screenwriter Bill Dubuque.

In the comics, Nightwing is the former Robin and protege to Batman, Dick Grayson, who goes off on his own to become a vigilante crime fighter and becomes the leader of the Teen Titans. Dick Grayson first appeared in Batman Detective Comics #38 in April 1940, with his first Nightwing appearance in Tales of the Teen Titans #44 in 1984.

While Nightwing has not been specifically mentioned in the DCEU as of yet, a Robin costume was featured in Batman vs. Superman, and it’s known that the costume belonged to the Jason Todd Robin, who WB has confirmed has been killed off.

The character of Dick Grayson and Nightwing was also attached to the defunct TNT Titans TV series, which never caught off the ground. Perhaps WB decided to go with the Nightwing live-action movie instead.

A rumor a while back also mentioned Nightwing would be attached to a Titans movie, with a separate rumor stating the Ben Affleck Batman movie would lead to a Dick Grayson Nightwing spinoff film.

No actors are attached to play Nightwing as of yet, but fans previously put forth The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun as a favorite pick, and Steven R. McQueen previously vied for the role when it was thought Nightwing might be coming to The CW’s Arrow.

The Nightwing movie joins Gotham City Sirens and the Ben Affleck Batman movie, which brings the DCEU’s current Batman family of flicks to four (including BvS), which is a no-brainer as the Batman characters are among the most popular. Deathstroke, played by Joe Manganiello, is also set to appear in the Batman movie and also happens to be a big adversary of Nightwing and the Teen Titans. Jared Leto has also been teasing a return to the Joker role, so WB is definitely planning on a big Batman universe of films.

Up next for the DCEU is Wonder Woman, out June 2nd, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League released November 17th. Aquaman has an October 5, 2018 release directed by James Wan starring Jason Momoa. WB also has movies for The Flash, Cybrg, Green Lantern Corps, Shazam!, Black Adam and Suicide Squad 2 in the works.

Chris McKay’s LEGO Batman movie is sitting at the top of the box office with over $184 million.
