JJ Abrams Responds to Star Wars: The Force Awakens Complaints

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23690:]]

It seems the more and more people I talk to about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the more people are coming to realize the movie wasn’t really all that good.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a very entertaining movie, and it was nice to see Star Wars back on the big screen, but as our movie reviewer told me, once you take your Star Wars fanboy/girl goggless off, the movie falls short of Phantom Menace.

A big gripe fans have with the movie is that — we’ve seen it all before; even the major death scene, and the movie didn’t progress any of the storyline.

Now J.J. Abrams responds to the criticisms.

Oh, and there is a petition to get George Lucas back on Star Wars.

Via THR:

“I knew that, whatever we did, there would be a group of people — and I was just hoping and praying that it would be smaller than not — that would take issue with any number of things,” Abrams says in the latest episode of THR’s Awards Chatter podcast, admitting that everything about the project initially scared him. “But I knew we weren’t making the movie for any other reason than we believed that it could be something meaningful and special and entertaining and worthy of people’s time.”

“I can understand that someone might say, ‘Oh, it’s a complete rip-off!’ ” he says, adding, “What was important for me was introducing brand new characters using relationships that were embracing the history that we know to tell a story that is new — to go backwards to go forwards.”

Regarding why he didn’t continue on with the second movie:

“I realized when I was working on [The Force Awakens], the amount of energy that was required to tell the story, and do it justice, knowing when Episode VIII would start shooting, there was no way — if I wanted to still have my children talk to me in my old age — that doing that would make any sense,” he says. “If The Force Awakens worked, it was the perfect place to say, ‘I got to make a Star Wars movie,’ and not be a greedy bastard. If it didn’t work, no-one would want me doing it anyway.”

On Episode VIII:

“Larry [Kasdan] and I had a bunch of thoughts of where certain things could go and we shared those things with Rian Johnson, who’s directing VIII,” he says. “He had things that he came up with where he asked if it was possible if we could make some adjustments with what we were doing at the end, most of which we did — there were just a couple that didn’t feel right, so he made adjustments — but it was just collaboration.”

Snoke & Maz Super-High Res Star Wars: The Force Awakens Images & New Look

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23684:]]

Disney has released even larger sized images of Supreme Commander Snoke and Maz from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In addition, a Redditor has manipulated the color of the Snoke image, which offers an even closer look at the big bad’s features.

You can also check out video about the theory that Snoke may actually be Darth Plagueis.

And here are the official descriptions of the characters:

Supreme Leader Snoke

The Supreme Leader of the First Order, the mysterious Snoke has no permanent base of operations, preferring to contact his underlings from a mobile command post. Snoke is powerful with the dark side of the Force, and seduced Kylo Ren into abandoning the Jedi path to become his apprentice. But Snoke also commands General Hux and the technological war machine the First Order has engineered to destroy the New Republic and Leia Organa’s Resistance.

Maz Katana

Maz Kanata is more than a thousand years old, a diminutive being with vast experience at surviving in the underworld. From her castle on Takodana, Maz has seen galactic powers rise and fall and felt the Force ebb and flow, seeking an elusive balance between darkness and light. She has given many a young smuggler a start by offering credits, equipment or connections, and helped many an old friend rediscover a lost path.

Star Wars: Rogue One Trailer Rumored Attached To Captain America: Civil War

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23682:]]

In what’s probably a no-brainer, it’s being rumored the Star Wars: Rogue One trailer will be attached to Captain America: Civil War.

Actually, the second teaser for The Force Awakens was attached to The Avengers 2, so it’s possible Disney may release the first Star Wars: Rogue One teaser prior to that (maybe during the Super Bowl?).

Slash Film has also rounded up a batch of Star Wars: Rogue One rumors which includes:

• Mads Mikkelsen‘s character is the Imperial scientist chiefly responsible for getting the final Death Star fully functional (via Making Star Wars).

Mads Mikkelsen (Galen appears to be his name in the film) is kind of the key to the film in a way. He is a scientist that took over the Geonosian Death Star project. He solved several of the flaws the Empire could not and is sort of a revered person in the Empire for his contributions. However, Mikkelsen’s character is a Robert Oppenheimer-type character. Oppenheimer helped design the atomic bomb only to say, “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” The guilt “Galen” feels for his contributions to the Empire become too much and he defects, attempting to make things right. In order to do this, he enlists the help of his only daughter….

• Mikkelsen’s daughter may be Felicity Jones’ character:  teams up with a group of rebels (and bounty hunters) to destroy what her father built.

Harry Potter‘s Guy Henry is believed to be playing an Imperial Officer (via Jedi News).

• Possible scene description with Bounty Hunters:

On the street, two men walk in front of the wreckage of the black-and-white X-wing fighter. It isn’t clear if they were a part of the crash or if it was just a part of their entrance. The first man has a long rifle that in spirit seems to resemble Doc Brown’s riffle from Back to the Future Part III. He has a black leather trench coat on. His mask is dull red and the visor is like a cross between Kylo Ren and and the Imperial guards from Return of the Jedi. The other man has a brown trench coat and a really big rifle with a stock that reminds me of the guns used on Hoth by the rebels in The Empire Strikes Back. If I had to guess, I would say these two are probably bounty hunters or two of the coolest extras of all time.

“Star Wars: Rogue One” has a December 16, 2016 release directed by Gareth Edwards starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, who plays a performance-capture character in Rogue One, and Riz Ahmed.

Synopsis:

Rogue One tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Borrows From Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Video Game

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23678:]]

Is it safe to say that just about everything in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is borrowed from previous material? Which is actually cause for a lot of complaints…

Spoilers follow for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

We know that The Force Awakens is a big time homage to A New Hope, but now it’s also learned that the Han Solo death scene was actually first played out in a video game. Obviously the scenes aren’t exactly the same, but watch the Han Solo death scene from the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2—Battle of Endor video game below which sees Han take a lightsaber right in the chest — virtually the exact same spot of Kylo Ren’s own finishing blow (via CBR).

Maybe there is something to that George Lucas petition?

And here are the images to compare:

Watch: The Snoke Darth Plagueis Theory

While Andy Serks may or may not have stated Supreme Leader Snoke is not Darth Plagueis (yeah, we’re not buying that, either), check out a video above going over the potential clues that the new bad of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the same Sith Lord that trained the Emperor.

A good point made in the video right off the bat is that Snoke has apparently suffered some sort of head trauma. We know that the Emperor has said he killed Plagueis in his sleep, which might have been with a blow to the head. So if Snoke is Plagueis, he obviously survived the attack somehow.

Some more evidence is that the John Williams music scores for the characters also line up exactly.

I actually wouldn’t mind Snoke being Darth Plagueis as it would be a nice way to tie all the Trilogies together.

The video above comes from the Mr. Sunday Movies YouTube channel. Also check out their Rey Kenobi video and Star Wars: The Force Awakens deleted scenes.

Bring Back George Lucas For Star Wars: Episode IX Petition Launched!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23670:]]

Hey! George Lucas wasn’t too thrilled with The Force Awakens, so why not bring him back on the franchise that he started?

That’s the idea behind a new petition that has launched on Change.org.

They want Lucas to replace Colin Trevorrow on Star Wars: Episode IX.

Bring back George Lucas for the Star Wars movies. Put the father of the franchise as director of Episode IX . We really want this, please.

It is noted they have no issues with Trevorrow, they just feel it’s only right for George Lucas to direct the last movie of the new Trilogy.

We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow , but he’s not the right guy to direct Star Wars Episode IX . George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away ….

As of now, the petition has a tad over 1200 supporters (800 more than when Newsarama posted a story about it).

So what say you? Is The Force still strong with George Lucas?

TR-8R Stormtrooper Name Revealed For Star Wars: The Force Awakens

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23669:]]

It wasn’t Han Solo, or Chewy, or Luke, or Finn, Rey, Poe or BB-8 that stole the show in Star Wars: The Force Awakens — it was the bad arse Stormtrooper that yelled “Traitor!”

And now he has a name.

If you’ve been online, you certainly have seemed various memes and videos associated with the Stormtrooper (aka TR-8R), and now LucasFilm has revealed his name.

FN-2199 GIF

The Stormtrooper is known as FN-2199, but his friends call him “Nines,” and Nines is also a part of the Greg Rucka’s Star Wars book, Before the Awakening

Nines trained and served on a squad with Finn (then FN-2187) in the First Order (see image below). That explains why he seems just a little extra angry upon seeing Finn during the attack on Maz’s Castle.

The name of Nines’ mace is also revealed; it’s a Z6 Baton.

He’s riot control, and part of an elite squad that enforces order or squashes uprisings. While their weapons are non-lethal in theory, the Z6 can definitely cause harm or kill an opponent when used with brute force.

Skywalker Sound sound editor David Acord provided the voice, and while Nines did get blasted by Han Solo, maybe we’ll see him again in a galaxy far, far away…

Update: Nines is played by Liang Yang, a veteran stunt performer.

Zack Snyder Responds To Batman Vs. Superman Trailer & Laughs At Prescreening Spoilers

Batman Vs. Superman Trailer #2

A few days ago saw a Redditor claim they saw an advanced screening for Batman Vs. Superman in which a lot of potential spoilers were released.

MTV caught up with director Zack Snyder about the Doritos Super Bowl contest and questioned him about the validity of the prescreening spoilers in which Snyder described it as “hilarious” and offered:

“Of course I hate it when any spoilers come out!” he said. “You design the movie as a story that evolves as you watch it, so moment-to-moment [you’re thinking], ‘Oh my god, what’s going to happen next? Are they gonna live? Are they gonna die?’ So you want that experience for the audience, as much as you can. If you’re, as an audience member, exploring these articles, looking for answers to questions that you have, maybe you’re okay with knowing before you go. It’s like an individual taste. But like I said, I want people to see the movie without knowing.”

Speaking of knowing too much, many fans online were upset by the amount of footage shown in the recent Batman Vs. Superman trailer (above); Snyder says not to worry:

“I have the benefit of seeing the movie,” he pointed out “It’s cool that they think it’s too much and I appreciate people not wanting to know, but there’s plenty that they don’t know. There’s a lot of movie that’s not in the trailer.”

Fans also complained about Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, in which Snyder had this to say:

“In the trailer, of course he comes across in a very specific way,” said Snyder. He and “Argo” screenwriter Chris Terrio had a lot of conversations about the sort of Lex they wanted to write before letting Eisenberg take the reins. “In the movie, he’s like a million times more sophisticated than what you get in 30 seconds. But that’s also the fun of it. That’s why you go to the movies, so you can actually see the context and understand the depth.”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23654:]]

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Mark Millar’s Superior Goes Into Production This Year; Who Should Direct?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23653:]]

The film adaptation of the popular Mark Millar comic book Superior will go into production this year, with the project being written by the writing duo of Brandon Murphy and Phillip Murphy.

If you haven’t read the Superior comic, I don’t want to spoil the plot for you, but it’s safe to say it’s a take on Superman, but with a twist as a boy with multiple sclerosis is granted one wish by an alien monkey, with that wish being to become his favorite action hero/super hero in real life — Superior (you can pick up the graphic novel on Amazon).

Millar is responsible for writing the Marvel Comics’ Civil War event comic book as well as his Kick-Ass comics and movies and the recent hit Kingsman: The Secret Service (awesome movie).

Earlier this morning saw Millar take to Twitter to ask fans who they think should direct Superior, with mention that it can’t be Matthew Vaughn as Vaughn is busy with the sequel to Secret Service

Two choices that came to my mind were Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange); however, as Millar noted, Superior will film this year, so Edwards and Derrickson are out of the equation due to Star Wars and Doctor Strange, respectively.

If you can recommend anybody for the gig, tweet @mrmarkmillar.

Millar also gave an update for the Nemesis movie in that it’s moved over to Warner Bros. and “going great.”

Zack Snyder talks Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman & Gal Gadot

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23644:]]

Zack Snyder offered a few tidbits of information regarding Wonder Woman in Batman Vs. Superman. You can head on over to Australia’s Film Ink for more.

• “We tested a bunch of actresses, as you can imagine. But the thing with Gal is that she’s strong, she’s beautiful, and she’s a kind person, which is interesting, but fierce at the same time. It’s that combination of being fierce but kind at the same time that we were looking for.”

• “…by the way, she really held her own with Ben in the screen test. Ben was like, ‘Whoa, that girl is something else!’ That was a good sign, because Ben is very tough in the scene, and he’s big and commanding.”

• “…she has a cameo in this movie. No, actually… it’s bigger than a cameo. She comes in and does something.”

• “They’re [Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman] forced to work together.”

Following Batman vs. Superman, Gal Gadot stars in the Wonder Woman movie, which has a June 23, 2017 release.

Following Captain America: Civil War (and maybe Doctor Strange!), Tom Holland will appear in the new standalone Spider-Man movie in 2017.

While the movie has been described as having a John Hughes-vibe, that doesn’t necessarily mean on a small scale.

“Smaller scale is all relative,” Marvel’s Kevin Feige told Empire Magazine. “It’s going to be as big and spectacular a Spider-Man film as has ever been made. But it’s a Peter Parker story and has more opportunity to be focused on the story of a 15-ear-old kid going to high school.”

The article further notes when we meet Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey is already a hero, there will be no more origin stories, and no more endless death for Uncle Ben.

“Captain America: Civil War” hits May 6, 2016; “Spider-Man” swings in July 28, 2017.

Thor: Ragnarok Will Feature Less Earth Says Feige

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23638:]]

Good news, Cosmic fans!

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige lets it be known that Thor: Ragnarok will feature less of Earth.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Feige says: “The film will take place in the cosmos primarily, which is to say, frankly, very little Earth.”

Honestly, I’m glad Thor 3 will be more cosmic and keep Thor in space as I wasn’t too happy with how they portrayed Thor recently on Earth in Avengers 2 (comic relief).

Feige also had more to say about Ragnarok: “I don’t think people will read into that title alone what the movie’s gong to be. It’s going to be perhaps as tonally different from the two prior Thor movies as Winter Soldier was from the first Captain America. We want to take it to new places, we’ve got new characters that will show how big we’re swinging on this. And we have a Hulk.”

Thor: Ragnarok has a November 3, 2017 release.

Andy Serkis Never Said Snoke Is Not Darth Plagueis?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23635:]]

With the release of the recent high-res images of Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: The Force Awakens came comments from Andy Serkis about just who the big bad really is.

There’s a theory that’s been going around online that Snoke is actually Darth Plagueis, the Sith Lord that trained the Emperor.

Serkis told EW.com the following about Snoke:

“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful,” Serkis says. “Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”

The article goes on to state that Snoke isn’t Darth Plagueis, and while Serkis isn’t quoted directly as stating it, EW notes:

Although there was much speculation about who Snoke might turn out to be (one popular theory was that he’d turn out to be a Sith Lord known from the prequels as Darth Plagueis) he actually turns out to be … just Snoke.

Serkis said the character was aware of the events from the earlier films but was a new addition to the storyline.

There is just one problem in that it should be noted EW.com is using quotes from an older article from November. So what gives? Is EW just providing spin to steer people in the wrong direction?

Honestly, I’m still not sold on Snoke not being Darth Plagueis – as Serkis didn’t specifically deny or say it – but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. In additon, the John Williams music scores match up, and reportedly, Disney told a movie podcast to scrap mention of Plagueis.

Another theory has aalso popped up online regarding the look of Snoke, is that he may be blind in one eye. A Redditor manipulated the image, which may hold some truth to it as Snoke’s left eye does look blind.

Thanos Won’t Be Messing Around In Next Appearance

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:23633:]]

The Mad Titan has been less than angry (or crazy) in his appearances thus far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that’s all about to change for Thanos.

While Thanos appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige (and recently director James Gunn) says not to look for Thanos in the sequel.

“I wouldn’t look to hard in that movie for Thanos,” Feige told Empire Magazine about Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Feige continues with mention Thanos will be more than just a cameo that smirks when we see him next.

“Are you asking if he’s going to do more than sit in a chair and smirk? Oh, yes,” Feige offered. “The next time we see Thanos he will not be messing around. It will be, “Oh, that’s why they’ve been teasing this villain for five years!'”

The article then speculates the “smart money” is on Thanos coming to Earth to retrieve the Infinity Stone from Vision’s head in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1.

Regarding Guardians of the Galaxy 2, while Thanos may not be featured, new members will.

“There have been many different incarnations of the Guardians over the years in the comics,” Feige said. “And we’ll catch a glimpse of additions over the course of the movie.”

Watch Thanos’s appearances in the MCU below as well as the Infinity War featurette.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” has a May 5, 2017 release; “The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” hits May 4, 2018.
