Warner Bros’ big screen adaptation of Tomb Raider appears to be another video game bust.
Reviews have been trickling in to Rotten Tomatoes with about 50% being positive to 50% being negative.
Tomb Raider presently has a 51% Rotten Tomatoes score with 29 Fresh to 27 Rotten.
The negative reviews tend to pick apart the film by stating it feels more like a video game than a movie, while others state it’s a flabby, lazy mess, and still others say it’s contrived and not satisfying.
The positive reviews offer it’s a splendid popcorn flick, has successfully reinvented the character, and Alicia Vikander makes a convincing and strong Lara Croft.
Tomb Raider was written by Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, but there probably shouldn’t be any worry for Marvel fans as Captain Marvel is a Marvel Studios film and will have more humor than Tomb Raider, which the Marvel fans seem to show up for.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet actually revealed humorous elements that were cut from Tomb Raider were used for Captain Marvel.
“Captain Marvel has a very funny voice, and it’s more of an action-comedy, more like what we were talking about doing in the first draft I wrote for Tomb Raider…. [but] that tone survived in Captain Marvel,” Robertson-Dworet explained “I love funny female characters, so as Tomb Raider got more serious, I got even more committed to the idea of Captain Marvel being hilarious.”
Tomb Raider opens Friday.
