The Matrix 4 will not be a prequel but will be set after Revolutions, confirms star Keanu Reeves who returns as Neo, as the fourth film in the franchise continues filming in Berlin, Germany.
It was previously rumored that the flick would be a prequel and feature a younger Morpheus, thought to be played by Aquaman villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, but while talking with BBC’s The One Show to promote his new movie Bill and Ted Face The Music, Reeves shuts down the rumors and says that is not the case.
“No, no. No going in the past. It’s another version, a call to wake up and it has some great action. All will be revealed,” teased Reeves.
The Matrix 4 set after Revolutions fits
The notion The Matrix 4 is not a prequel also fits with Laurence Fishburne not returning as Morpheus, as Morpheus was killed off in The Matrix Online video game where Morpheus died of gunshot wounds, as the game was marketed as canon and a continuation of the original trilogy.
Neil Patrick Harris, who is said to be playing the villain of The Matrix 4 (possibly a new Agent Smith?) also recently revealed the style will be different than the original trilogy, which further supports The Matrix 4 not being a prequel.
“I think [director Lana Wachowski] has a great inclusive energy and her style has shifted visually from what she had done to what she is currently doing,” Harris said on the Sirius XM’s Jess Cagle Show. “I’ve always wanted to be a lead in a big giant action movie with wires and stuff. And this is not bad for me, but it’s certainly tangential and fun for me to be able to play in the sandbox a little bit.”
Another tidbit said about The Matrix 4 is that Jessica Henwick is said to be playing a Neo-like character.
When I exclusively revealed The Matrix 4 was going to film in Berlin, I also revealed details for a new character, which just be Oracle.
The Matrix 4 has an April 1, 2022 release also starring the return of Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith.
