Non-Binary Character Confirmed for Disney’s ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Revival

Non-Binary Character Confirmed for Disney’s Malcolm in the Middle Revival

It’s confirmed that Disney’s upcoming revival of Malcolm in the Middle will indeed feature a non-binary character.

A rumor hit the net back in February that the youngest child of the Wilkerson family would be non-binary, which was followed up by the trades in March.

The youngest sibling of Frankie Muniz’s Malcolm is Kelly (new to the show, hinted at in the final episode) and is being played by non-binary actress Vaughan Murrae, who uses the pronouns “they/them” on her Instagram page, and who first thought she might have been a trans man before hearing about being non-binary.

Already wiser than most of the family

Responding to the March announcement by Deadline, Vaughan Murrae confirmed her character, Kelly, is non-binary in Disney’s Malcolm in the Middle revival, and we also see she sounds better than the entire family:

CASTING NOTICE!
I have been sitting on this news for over a month! I am so happy to be able to share it with you today! I’ll be seeing you all in the MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE revival special on @disneyplus !

I’ll be joining the original cast and new faces as ‘Kelly’, Hal & Lois’ little series finale “surprise”… 19 years later. 🤭😉 Kelly (non-binary), is described as self-sufficient, gets good grades and is already wiser than most of the family.

Shooting begins this April.

Malcolm in the Middle now in production

Per above, the Malcolm in the Middle revival is now in production, as Frankie Muniz posted on social media on Tuesday a reunion image of himself with Bryan Cranston, who returns as Hal, and Jane Kaczmarek, who returns as Lois.

What is the Malcolm in the Middle revival about?

The revival consists of four episodes, and per the logline: “Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

Christopher Masterson is also back as Francis, and Justin Berfield is returning as Reese in the new series. Erik Per Sullivan is not returning as Dewey, but instead, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will take over the role, as Sullivan is said to be retired from acting.

Anthony Timpano is also playing Malcolm’s youngest brother, Jamie, who was introduced in the fourth season.

Kiana Madeira is playing Tristan, Malcolm’s girlfriend, and Keeley Karsten is playing Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, said to have “the same sarcastic humor, same impulsiveness and the same frighteningly high intelligence” as her father Malcolm, “but she’s far more sensitive and emotional.”
