Why Jake Paul Wanted Anthony Joshua

Jake Paul has pushed for bigger challenges, and he named Joshua as a target long before this fight became real. Paul said he wanted a fighter who could hit harder than anyone he had faced. Joshua fits that description.

Paul’s rise has been fast. He went from viral name to legitimate draw, knocking out Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, and Nate Diaz. His jump into heavyweight with a win over Mike Tyson broke viewership records, pulling in 108 million viewers. Paul followed that with a decision win over Julio César Chávez Jr., earning a No. 14 WBA cruiserweight ranking.

He also pushed outside the ring — speaking about fighter pay, backing young prospects, and working with USA Boxing ahead of the 2024 Olympics.

Now he calls this fight “Judgment Day,” saying beating Joshua erases every doubt about his place in the sport.

“”This isn’t an AI simulation. This is Judgment Day,” Paul told Netflix. “A professional heavyweight fight against an elite world champion in his prime. When I beat Anthony Joshua, every doubt disappears, and no one can deny me the opportunity to fight for a world title. To all my haters, this is what you wanted. To the people of the United Kingdom, I am sorry. On Friday, December 19, under the lights in Miami, live globally only on Netflix, the torch gets passed and Britain’s Goliath gets put to sleep.”

Anthony Joshua’s Road Back to the Top

Anthony Joshua brings one of the best heavyweight résumés of the last decade. He won Olympic gold, unified titles, headlined stadium events in the UK, and delivered classics like the Klitschko war at Wembley.

Joshua reclaimed his championships after the Ruiz loss, stayed active against names like Usyk, Pulev, Wallin, and Ngannou, and kept himself in the title mix. In 2024 he knocked out Francis Ngannou in a highlight finish and fought Daniel Dubois for the IBF belt.

Joshua views Paul as another chance to pull huge numbers and stay in the spotlight. He says he’s coming in with “no mercy” and intends to “break the internet over Jake Paul’s face.”

“Jake or anyone can get this work,” said Joshua. “No mercy. I took some time out and I’m coming back with a mega show. It’s a big opportunity for me. Whether you like it or not, I’m here to do massive numbers, have big fights and break every record whilst keeping cool, calm and collected. Mark my words, you’ll see a lot more fighters take these opportunities in the future. I’m about to break the internet over Jake Paul’s face.”
