How To Train Your Dragon: First Look At Live-Action Film

How To Train Your Dragon is getting the live-action treatment. A first look has been revealed featuring Mason Thames suited up as Hiccup.

The flick adapts the popular animated movies that have brought in over a billion dollars at the box office.

How To Train Your Dragon gets released June 13, 2025 directed by Dean DeBlois, the writer and director behind the animated movies, and Chris Sanders, the director and writer behind The Wild Robot who also co-directed and co-wrote the first How To Train Your Dragon.

What are the How To Train Your Dragon details?

Via Empire Online, similar to the three animated movies, the live-action features the young viking, Hiccup, and his dragon buddy, Toothless, set in the Isle Of Berk.

“It’s so dialed-up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him,” says DeBlois.

While a look at Toothless has yet to be revealed, DeBlois says Hiccup “represents all of the oddballs out there, and there are many of us.” He continues, “There was a bit of awkwardness, but also a vulnerability to him which [came] with the fact that he was 15 when we were auditioning him.”

Update: The How To Train Your Dragon trailer has officially been released online offering a look at Toothless the dragon and more. The official synopsis and first poster has also been released as well as a first look at Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs:

Also starring includes Gerard Butler as Stoick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fishlegs, Craig Ferguson as Gobber, America Ferrera as Astrid, Jonah Hill as Snotlout, T.J. Miller as Tuffnut, Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut, Robin Atkin Downes as Ack, Philip McGrade as Starkard, Kieron Elliott as Hoark the Haggard, Ashley Jensen as Phlegma the Fierce, and David Tennant as Spitelout.

Mason Thames is also known for The Black Phone and stars in Monster Summer with Mel Gibson.
