The live-action Voltron movie starring Henry Cavill adds two more to its cast with Laura Gordon (Late Night with the Devil) and Tim Griffin (Grey’s Anatomy).
“This is going to be FUN,” confirmed Gordon on Instagram.
They join the recent casting announcements of Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, and Tharanya Tharan.
Previous to that, added to the cast includes Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora and John Kim.
Along with Henry Cavill, also starring in Voltron includes Daniel Quinn-Toye. All the roles are being kept under wraps.
They have “reimagined Voltron for the live-action world”
It’s also unknown how much of a direct adaptation they are doing of the beloved original 1980s animated series (I still have my original Lions).
Voltron movie director Rawson Marshall Thurber released shared at video at the recent VoltCon while prepping for filming offering they have “reimagined Voltron for the live-action world” adding that the flick would be in the “spirit of Voltron.”
Worth a mention is the announced cast doesn’t look much like the original Voltron characters, which includes Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, Sven, and Princess Allura. Supporting characters include Coran, King Alfor, Nanny, Zarkon, Prince Lotor, and Haggar.
The recent Netflix animated series also changed Pidge into a female, race-swapped Allura, and I think made Lance and Shiro gay. Maybe, Keith, too. However, since the announcement of the live-action movie, the Voltron animated series has been yanked from Netflix, claimed to be a coincidence.
Voltron isn’t hard to get right. Rawson Marshall Thurber claims to be a huge fan. Well, so did the woke producer behind Kevin Smith’s He-Man.
Some fans think because of the involvement of Henry Cavill that Voltron won’t be drastically changed or woke, but recall, Cavill did Argylle, which was pure bait-and-switch and was atrocious.
What did Rawson Marshall Thurber say about his Voltron movie?
Hi, everyone. I’m Rawson Marshall Thurber, the writer/director behind the upcoming Voltron movie from Amazon MGM Studios. I wish I could be with you all at VoltCon right now, but I’m down here in the Gold Coast of Australia preparing to make the movie. We’re about six weeks out from shooting. I’m incredibly excited.
You know, I loved Voltron since I was a boy, and I wanted to make this movie since I was eight years old. And so to finally, finally have the chance to bring Voltron to life is beyond thrilling to me. I want to make sure that we stay true to the heart, and the spirit of Voltron.
In this film, we’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world but we’re going to stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron and those iconic elements that you love, that I love. And so I am so excited to share it with you.
You know, it’s taken us forty years to get here, but I promise you, I promise you it will be worth the wait. I gotta go, but before I go, I wanted to take you all on a sneak peek. I’m going to take you over to Stage 8 where we’re building one of our bigger Voltron sets just to share with you the scope and the scale and the grandeur that we’re going for on this film. So come on with me. I’ll probably get in trouble for this but don’t tell anyone.
Alright, here we go. Gold Coast of Australia. Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! One of the coolest things about getting to make a movie is that you don’t make a movie by yourself. You make it with hundreds of other artists and collaborators who help bring your vision to life, much like these people right here. Say hi, everybody! Alright, let’s go Voltron Force! Woo!
Rawson Marshall Thurber also teased scenes from the movie. Voltron has no release date as of yet and comes from Amazon MGM Studios.
