A live-action Voltron movie is in the works which also happens to see – at the same time – that the Voltron: Legendary Defender animated series is likely getting removed from Netflix.
The Voltron movie was recently announced and confirmed by its director, Rawson Marshall Thurber, to start filming soon. The live-action Voltron is starring Henry Cavill and Daniel Quinn Toye (so far).
Regarding the Voltron: Legendary Defender animated series, it looks to be getting removed from Netflix on Dec. 7th.
Apparently, some fans are so upset that it has caused the official Voltron Facebook page to comment on the situation.
According to the Facebook page’s statement (see below), it is a coincidence the movie starts filming at the same time as the removal. The page also says that if a new deal doesn’t go through between DreamWorks Animation, who owns the rights to the animated series, and Netflix, that Voltron: Legendary Defender won’t be on Netflix starting on Dec. 7. The FB Page does note it will be available to purchase on Amazon, but only the first six seasons.
“Seasons 1-6 can be purchased on Amazon Prime. They will continue to be available after December 7th. For now, seasons 7 and 8 will be harder to come by, unfortunately,” says the account.
The page also answered fan questions in the comments and said they don’t have info if the entire eight seasons will be released as a box set (seasons 7 and 8 haven’t been released in physical form) but told the fans to keep asking to make it clear there is demand.
According to what director Rawson Marshall Thurber has said about the live-action Voltron movie, they’ve “reimagined Voltron for the live-action world” and are “going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots.” The film doesn’t have a release date as of yet.

Jokes aside, let’s talk about the Netflix situation.
It’s been reported that Voltron: Legendary Defender will be leaving Netflix on December 7th. We’ve been asked to confirm and clarify a number of times.
Here is a summary of the situation:
1. Voltron: Legendary Defender was not produced by Netflix. It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and licensed to Netflix. That license is expiring.
2. There is a chance the license gets renewed, those discussions are ongoing between all parties involved.
3. If the license does not get renewed, DreamWorks is free to license VLD to another streaming platform.
4. Seasons 1-6 can be purchased on Amazon Prime. They will continue to be available after December 7th. For now, seasons 7 and 8 will be harder to come by, unfortunately.
5. If an extension is not agreed upon, December 7th is not the *last* day to watch Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix, it is the *first* day you *can’t* watch Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix anymore.
We’ve been asked if this is because Amazon is producing a live action Voltron film. The live action film and the end of the contract to stream Legendary Defender are completely unrelated. By coincidence, a film that has been in development for years is moving into production around the same time as the six-year terms of the Netflix contract are coming to an end.
Assuming the contract is not renewed, if you are interested in getting in one more rewatch while Voltron: Legendary Defender is still on Netflix, you have 50 days to watch all 75 episodes.
That means if you watch three episodes every two days, or about 11 episodes a week, you can time saying goodbye to VLD on Netflix with the Paladins saying goodbye to the Lions.
Legendary Defender will still be available elsewhere, but if it’s taken off Netflix, it will mark the end of a Voltron era. Will you be getting in one more rewatch before December 7th?
