On Thursday it was learned that Disney had killed the planned Star Wars Boba Fett movie to instead focus on the new Jon Favreau The Mandalorian TV series for the Disney Play streaming app.
While there has been a plethora of bad news surrounding Disney Star Wars due to The Last Jedi and Han Solo, EW.com actually reports there may be a ray of sunshine (no, not that Rey) in that the possibility of a resurrection some time down the road remains.
They also offer plot details in that the Boba Fett movie, which was being developed by Logan‘s James Mangold, would have focused on Fett and the menagerie of bounty hunters who appeared alongside him on the deck of a Star Destroyer in The Empire Strikes Back.
The Boba Fett movie was actually first being developed at LucasFilm as far back as 2013 and even had Fantastic Four director Josh Trank on board. A teaser was all set to be released at Star Wars Celebration 2015, but yanked when the controversy surrounding Josh Trank came to light and he was fired.
As The Mandalorian features similar looking characters (they are from the same tribe as Boba Fett and his father Jango), it’s really no surprise that the Boba Fett movie has been placed on the backburner. The Mandalorian will be an original story set after the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi, and preceding the rise of The First Order in The Force Awakens.
Following the poor reception to both The Last Jedi and Han Solo, Disney CEO Bob Iger also announced they are slowing down the release of new Star Wars movies following Episode IX, and Disney actually hasn’t announced any new Star Wars movies as of yet.
Regarding the future of the Boba Fett movie, it’s possible it could always come back around 2021 or after, which is when Kathleen Kennedy’s LucasFilm contract expires.
