It’s claimed that Drew Goddard might be directing Spider-Man 4 if director Jon Watts doesn’t return for a fourth time.
The info comes via DanielRPK who says Drew Goddard is Marvel Studios’ top choice to direct Spider-Man 4 if Jon Watts decides to pass on the film.
Drew Goddard is known for directing The Cabin in the Woods, and producing Alias, Lost, The Martian, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Defenders and Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix.
Goddard also has a Sony and Marvel connection as he was going to direct the Sinister Six movie that never came to be.
What is also interesting is that it has been rumored Spider-Man 4 will connect to Sony’s Spidey spinoff universe, so Goddard seems like a good match to bridge the two universes.
“It was really fun,” Goddard said back in 2018 about his Sinister Six. “I wouldn’t have done it had I not thought there was a real opportunity to do something different and exciting and just flat-out bananas. It was very much me and — a much more commercial version of — the Cabin mentality. The punk rock mentality that led to Cabin is very much at the core of Sinister Six. That’s a fun one.” Goddard continued, “Who knows, it could see the light of day. It’s funny, I’ve been through a lot of volatility at a lot of different studios. Between MGM and Sony and Fox. At a certain point, you start to realize, ‘Oh, this is just a volatile business’ and you try to stay afloat as the boat rocks back and forth.”
Tom Holland will be back if it is done right
Tom Holland also recently addressed returning for Spider-Man 4, but said it has to be right for him to return.
“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland explained. “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.”
He continued, “I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”
“If we can figure that out, I would be a fool not to put the suit back on again because I owe everything to Spider-Man,” he said. “I love the character and the people I get to work with. So, I would love to tell another story, but I’ll only tell it if we can find the right one.”
Both the head of Sony and Kevin Feige have confirmed Spider-Man 4 is happening. Rumors already offer Tom Holland is back along with Zendaya and that it fills next year. It’s also said to lay the foundation for Avengers: Secret Wars.
