Kevin Feige’s track record of colossal bombs seems likely to continue with Captain America: Brave New World which is shaping up to be as big as a bomb as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
According to a new report, the budget has ballooned to nearly $400 million, which is something comparable to Kathleen Kennedy’s massive bomb of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which lost Disney $143 million.
Lots of changes: title and release dates
Captain America 4 was originally titled “New World Order” and was supposed to be released on May 3, 2024. However, the release date was changed to July 26, 2024, and the film was retitled “Brave New World” (which means the same thing).
Then saw the release date pushed back another seven months to February 14, 2025 (is it a romance movie???), with Deadpool & Wolverine taking that summer release date.
Massive reshoots
It’s known Captain America: Brave New World has been undergoing massive rehoots.
Now it’s claimed that the reshoots involve basically re-filming the entire movie and adding another $75-$100 million to the budget, bringing the total to around $350-$375 million.
Will fans accept Anthony Mackie as Captain America?
Sound familiar? Kathleen Kennedy’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny had a budget that ballooned to $387 million, but total expenses reached a whopping $516 million. With Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bombing at the box office, the film lost Disney $143 million.
The comparisons don’t end there. Just as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny had Phoebe Waller-Bridge thought to be replacing Harrison Ford as Indy, Captain America 4 sees Anthony Mackie replacing Chris Evans as Captain America. This change is also being questioned in terms of its potential success.
Huge budget
A new report comes via the World of Reel who has been provided insider info on Captain America: Brave New World‘s huge budget and problems with the film.
Backing up other reports, the site says extensive reshoots were ordered by Marvel following negative test scores of the first cut, which was described as “underwhelming.”
It’s been said the action scenes were really lackluster and not on par with the previous Captain America movies from the Russo Brothers which has led to all the delays and reshoots.
“Monstrous mess for Marvel”
It’s pointed out that filming actually finished in June 2023, which would have allowed for the original May 3, 2024 release date. However, following the poor test results, reshoots were ordered.
World of Reel reports that Captain America: Brave New World has turned into a “monstrous mess for Marvel” and has been dumped to the February 2025 release date as a result, suggesting “major trouble is brewing.”
For the reshoots, a new writer has been brought on board, and new characters have been added. Recently, it was confirmed that Giancarlo Esposito, who wasn’t part of the original filming, has joined the cast.
“Could be a catastrophic disaster”
It’s all amounting to what could be a catastrophic disaster for the Mouse House,” says World of Reel, questioning if audiences will show up to see a Captain America movie that doesn’t star Chris Evans. A previous report from a Disney insider has also said fans prefer the Anthony Mackie Falcon action figure to the Mackie Cap figure.
Regarding the budget, World of Reel says Brave New World already had a budget of $275 million, but the added reshoots are tacking on another $75-$100 million. The site’s insiders even say, “It’s like they’re shooting a brand new movie.”
It has been confirmed Marvel Studios will be at Comic-Con next month, and Kevin Feige recently teased Fantastic Four for Comic-Con. This suggests Captain America: Brave New World will likely be showcased there, too. Footage was already shown at CinemaCon recently, so we can expect the trailer release at Comic-Con and hopefully some explanations and updates.
