Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Trailer Sparks Backlash

The gameplay reveal for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, revealed at Gamescom, is already facing controversy. The trailer on YouTube has drawn more dislikes than likes, with 4.4K dislikes compared to only 2K likes at the time of writing.

Many fans in the comments say they’re looking forward to Battlefield 6 instead.

A New Black Ops Storyline

Activision officially confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 continues directly from Black Ops 6, marking the first time the series has had back-to-back entries. The story moves forward to the year 2035, forty years after the events of Black Ops 2.

This time, David Mason leads a new Black Ops squad against an enemy that uses fear and psychological tactics. Developers Treyarch and Raven Software describe it as the “most mind-bending Black Ops ever.”

Teaser and Marketing Push

The cinematic teaser released in June set the tone for the game, with the new trailer below offering more footage, including a Zombies tease. Tyler Bahl, head of marketing, said the teaser is only the beginning and that fans can expect clues, surprises, and additional reveals leading into the full showcase.

Bahl also highlighted the strategic shift of staying within the Black Ops sub-series for consecutive games, allowing live seasons in Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone to roll directly into Black Ops 7.

Community Reaction

While Activision is positioning Black Ops 7 as a major evolution of the franchise, the reveal has not been well received. Many longtime players feel the direction doesn’t match expectations, and interest seems to be shifting toward Battlefield 6. They also feel COD has gone more on the goofier side of things, similar to Fortnite.

The most-liked comments include:

  • The fall of Call of Duty has to be studied…
  • I can’t wait to play Battlefield 6 soon
  • This franchise is like Madden. Same game for every release, yet people will buy it anyway.
  • Ok this makes me want to play BF 6 even more
  • I hope BF6 is so much of a success that it forces CoD back to its roots instead of this Fortnite BS we’ve had for years.
