Ben Affleck, Matt Damon Reunite in Netflix Cop Thriller ‘The Rip’ — Watch Trailer

Netflix has released the first trailer for The Rip, a new cop thriller starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film reunites the longtime collaborators under director Joe Carnahan and drops on Netflix later this month.

What Is The Rip About?

Set in Miami, The Rip follows the Miami-Dade Tactical Narcotics Team after a massive drug bust uncovers more than $20 million in cash. What should be a routine seizure quickly turns into a nightmare.

Matt Damon plays Lieutenant Dane Dumars, who explains that in Miami, seized cash must be counted on-site so everyone knows exactly how much is there. That rule becomes a problem when the team realizes the money likely belongs to a cartel — and they’re stuck in hostile territory.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon at Odds

Ben Affleck stars as Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne, Dumars’ longtime partner. Their relationship is already strained after Dumars is promoted, turning former equals into boss and subordinate.

That tension explodes once the temptation of the cash sets in. The trailer shows trust breaking down fast, with Byrne accusing Dumars outright of wanting to steal the money. As Affleck puts it, the film asks what happens when good cops are faced with massive temptation — and who they can really trust.

Surrounded, Trapped, and Running Out of Time

Outside threats escalate as well. The team receives menacing phone calls, and nearby houses signal to each other using flashing porch lights. According to director Joe Carnahan, the cops can’t leave without becoming targets, forcing them to defend their position while counting the money and watching each other.

Damon adds that the characters know the cash belongs to extremely dangerous people who are likely coming to get it. That pressure fuels gunfights, car chases, and rooftop shootouts seen throughout the trailer.

Release Date

The Rip premieres on Netflix on January 16.
