Congrats is in order to Disney, Marvel, and Kevin Feige as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has beat a record held by DC’s Batman vs. Superman for seven years.
Back in 2016 saw Batman vs. Superman released to a massive $166 million opening where fans were excited to see the flick which followed the debut of Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel and would lead to the DC heroes assembling in Justice League.
So, similar to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, no pun intended, big things were expected.
However, once fans actually saw the movie it was a different story, again similar to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
In its second weekend at the box office, Batman vs. Superman saw a huge drop of 69.1% which at the time was the record for the worst second-weekend drop of any superhero film opening to $100 million or more.
Now that’s all changed with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Worst second-weekend drop for a superhero film
In its own second weekend, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania dropped 69.7% setting a new record for the worst second-weekend drop of any superhero film opening to $100 million or more.
Ant-Man 3 opened last weekend with $106 million but this weekend the film only brought in $32.2 million, where the drop is actually a lot more if we count the holiday weekend opening of $120 million (Batman vs Superman also opened on a holiday weekend).
The two films also have low Rotten Tomatoes scores in common as the critics gave Batman vs Superman a 29%, with Ant-Man 3 a 48%, the second lowest Marvel score behind Eternals.
Both flicks also share a B CinemaScore, and nearly the same IMDb rating: BvS a 6.4, with Ant-Man 3 a 6.5.
Prior to the release of Ant-Man 3, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Disney is slowing things down with Marvel as they want to output quality over quantity and that going forward it’s about accountability, so it’s obvious Disney is aware of all the Marvel problems as Disney went a similar route with their Star Wars franchise following the release of The Last Jedi.
Zack Snyder is now out at DC with James Gunn in charge, with Snyder at Netflix currently developing his epic sci-fi movie, Rebel Moon, which ironically, is seeing fans compare to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but not how you think.
