Marvel’s Midnight Universe Revealed: Hickman Launches Horror X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four

Marvel Comics has revealed new details about its Midnight Universe, confirming the new horror publishing line launches in August 2026 with Midnight X-Men by Jonathan Hickman and Matteo Della Fonte.

The line won’t be Midnight Sons, at least not yet. Instead, Marvel is taking some of its biggest characters and dropping them into a darker, horror-driven universe that includes the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man.

The first three titles are Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight Spider-Man.

Midnight Universe Starts With X-Men

Marvel describes the Midnight Universe as “a terrifying new publishing line” where creators reimagine Marvel’s biggest icons through a horror lens.

The line kicks off with Midnight X-Men #1, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Matteo Della Fonte and a cover by Dike Ruan. The issue goes on sale August 5, 2026.

The story takes place in New York City, where vampires and mutant empires are on the edge of war. Marvel says peace between the two species is starting to collapse, with the “unturned” caught in the middle.

Hickman, who helped reshape the X-Men with House of X and Powers of X, said the project lines up with the kind of stories he likes to tell.

“I’m so enthusiastic about this project—it’s the most excited I’ve been in years,” Hickman said. “The conceit of MIDNIGHT X-MEN aligns perfectly with the kind of stories I like to tell. It has a rich, open-ended mythology that equally mixes old and new ideas into something that feels both familiar and original.”

Fantastic Four Gets A Lovecraftian Horror Origin

Midnight Fantastic Four follows in September 2026.

The series is written by Benjamin Percy with art by Kev Walker. Marvel’s description makes it sound like a horror remix of the team’s origin story, with an obsessive scientist pushing too far into the secrets of the universe and leaving himself and three others changed in disturbing ways.

Percy said the book lets him take Marvel’s First Family into full cosmic horror territory.

“When I imagined this other version of Marvel—a terrifying, poisoned universe—my mind immediately went to the Fantastic Four,” Percy said. “This is a title I have always loved, but would never be allowed to write otherwise. Now I could lean into my worst instincts and reimagine their story as one of cosmic, Lovecraftian dread.”

Spider-Man Becomes A Monster

Midnight Spider-Man launches in October 2026.

The series is written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by Scie Tronc, who makes his Marvel Comics debut on the title.

This version of Peter Parker is transformed into a spider hybrid by Oscorp, which is hunting for eternal life. After Oscorp uses Peter’s mutation to create more human-animal hybrids, Peter accepts his monstrous new form and fights back.

Johnson said the Midnight line is not like Marvel’s main continuity or the Ultimate Universe.

“Midnight is nothing like the main line, nothing like the Ultimate line,” Johnson said. “You will see things in these books that shock you.”

Marvel Goes Dark With New Publishing Line

Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski compared the Midnight Universe to past Marvel attempts to build new lines, including the New Universe and the Ultimate Universe.

“With the new Midnight line, we’ve given some of our most outstanding creators the opportunity to delve into the darkest corners of their imaginations and birth some of the creepiest, most terrifying takes on the Marvel Universe you’ve ever seen,” Cebulski said.

The covers will also have a gimmick. Marvel says the Midnight titles will use “Cloaked Covers,” where the artwork is partly hidden. For most issues after the debuts, the full cover art will only be revealed after readers pick up the comic.

Midnight Universe Release Schedule

Midnight X-Men #1 goes on sale August 5, 2026.

Midnight Fantastic Four #1 follows in September 2026.

Midnight Spider-Man #1 arrives in October 2026.

Marvel says more details and cover reveals are coming in the months ahead.
